Legitimately what are the Canucks doing? Do they have any kind of coherent long-term plan? Are they capable at all of making decisions based off of more information than just the last 6 months of results?
Actual answer—I think they are tearing down the old core that surrounds Quinn Hughes (Miller, Pettersson, Boeser, Demko) and are going to attempt to moonshot a new core around him within the next year.

If they were tops and a serious contender in the west… sure use him let him walk.
The Canucks are in no way guaranteed a playoff spot.
You need trade him and get some assets.

you have to trade him if he does not sign and the canucks dont think they will get a deal done.

Asset control is needed.

Its not like the canucks have a chance to go far in the playoffs this year...

We have an owner who values gate revenue from a few playoff games more than long term assets
Good point. The same owner fired his most successful GM to hire Benning, who he kept for 8 embarrassingly bad seasons full of one horrid GM mistake after another.

Yes this exactly!

Its the rebuild fans wanted in 2022 when management was first hired only now its by default and on the fly and more retool-ie.

He's been a lesser version of himself for more or less his entire time on the team. Last year he showed he's still got it when healthy and all in, but he's nowhere close to that player this year and we don't really have a good reason why not. Maybe he got concussed by that headshot earlier in the year? Who knows.

He's an amazing person (what he did for that girl with Down syndrome is just fantastic) and seems humble and well liked. I wish him all the success in the world but he just isn't worth what he's reportedly asking for. He took a paycut before to help the team and probably won't be rewarded for it and that sucks but hes just not been any good. He doesnt create anything without JT Miller. He still has a crazy shot and can finish any play but he doesn't create his own shots. If he goes to a team where he can play with a center that takes most of the defensive attention, he will get open and be effective, but he isn't the all round threat he used to be.

Love the guy, wish him all the best, but don't overpay him. Trading seems like the best option unless he takes a team friendly deal, which if I were him I wouldn't.

I remember how pissed I was when Benning let Hamhuis walk away in FA....this would be much worse
Definitely not worse. The year Benning didnt trade Hamhuis before the TDL, the Canucks were third last place in the league. They had no hope in hell of being a top 25 team lol. They were laughably bad

The Canucks currently are in a playoff spot and playing the best hockey of their season. Now granted probably they would be wise to trade Brock Boeser if they cannot sign him, but I would not compare the situation today to how ridiculously stupid it was in 2016 when Benning failed to trade Hamhuis

Crazy anyone would think Boeser has any interest in staying on a discount.

He’s going to market unless he’s traded somewhere he’s willing to sign an extension with. Likely going to market though, even if he is traded. Would he stay on a max type deal with a NMC? Money always talks, so maybe..

This is just one of those situations where a player remembers things. The Canucks would be smart to trade him, but at the same time it sends a horrible message when you trade off UFAs during a playoff push.

Fans on sites like this understand why they probably should move him. Especially a player who’s frankly not coming back, but there’s a lot more fans that pay the bills, who don’t care about anything but the here and now. Don’t care about the draft, picks, prospects, etc. They care that their team is in the playoffs, and that’s how teams look at things. For every comment ok with trading him you see on a teams FB page, there’s 10 who’d be angry trading him just because he’s a pending UFA.

Fans want playoff runs and if they start thinking you’re not committed to that, you start losing fans. In his case, they don’t care if he’s not going to re-sign.

The Canucks being pretty proactive though, if they can get a deal for a player under contract, they’d probably pull the trigger. They have to be able to sell any deal though. If they’re playing bad come March 7, it’ll make it much easier to sell if it’s futures.

if they can't get him under long term contract. personally i think the canucks should rebuild. sell pettersson, boeser, demko, etc. the only hard question is what to do with quinn. is he going to stick it out if canucks go scorched earth?
Gotta trade him at that point then I guess
