Bobby Hull passes away (MOD #23- stay to hockey- see Admin warning within)

He was a huge star in the 60’s, and into the 70’s. Definitely one the faces of hockey, you could say, “ the face”, till Orr came along. Fast, strong as hell, with an incredible shot. A Superstar.
My wife's uncle played on the same Jr B hockey team with Bobby Hull and Walter Gretzky. My brother-in-law tells the story of seeing Bobby Hull at the Guelph Gardens in a preseason game with the Rangers. Gump Worsley was in goal and Hull wired a slapper from centre ice that nailed the cross bar. Gumper didn't even flinch. His ears were probably still ringing in the dressing room after the game but at least it didn't hit him. I don't know how goalies went maskless for so long.

I’m old enough to remember when curves came out, with Hull being the poster boy for them. It is forgotten now, but was one of the major innovations that the game has seen, right up there with the forward pass.

As kids, we were drooling over them, and trying to bend our straight bladed CCM’s by steaming them, or soaking them in water.

I've set up a general thread on Hull's legacy here:

Read post #1 until you understand it. Keep the controversial stuff there, please (not here). Conversely, if you only want condolences and good memories, stay out of there.

Today when a honored member of a hockey team has his number retired it is full blown extravaganza. That was not the case in 1983 when the Blackhawks hoisted #9 to the rafters at Chicago Stadium.

This video only exists because somebody at WSBK-TV Boston recorded the raw video coming from Chicago and saved it. Obviously nobody in Chicago saw it and viewers in Boston only saw what is in part 2 when announcers Fred Cusick and John Pierson went live.

This is simply fascinating to watch.

I find it surprising that Hull says during the ceremony, "The biggest mistake I ever made in my life was leaving the city of Chicago."

RIP legend. Had the pleasure of meeting him. Had a great conversation, got an autograph and took a pic. Great guy.

it is pretty nuts....im still trying to invision tthe game of hockey being played with no forward passes and what that game would look like

Rest in peace Bobby. You are indeed an all time great who changed the game of hockey.

Probably still the best left winger in the history of the game. Ovechkin is his only competition, and it isn't wrong to put Ovie at the top of that list either. Both have a case. I think I still put Hull there though. Either way, the next best LW in history, maybe Mahovlich or Lindsay, is a clear step behind them.

Hull definitely had the off-ice and on-ice impact. Winnipeg maybe still doesn't have an NHL city without him. Chicago has a Cup drought from 1938 to 2010 - 72 years - without him.

He might have been the poster boy for them but he didn't come up with the idea.
