Bobby Hull legacy thread (see admin warning post #1)

I was going to compare Hull to Jim Brown in terms of legacies (abusive men who were all time greats at their sport around the same era), but honestly lost my train of thought reading the last page.

Feel like Ashton Kutcher is hiding in my closet now.

I know how you feel.

Part of me wants to simply state that Bobby Hull was one of the most entertaining/crowd-pleasing players I’ve ever seen. The guy could lift you out of your seat.

Another part of me wants to say that nearly every published observation about his horrible actions off the ice mentions “alcohol” as a contributing factor. That’s definitely not an excuse, but for those of us who believe the game of Hockey has the capacity to help create better human beings, it’s deeply saddening.

And yet another part of me wants to address the bizarre issue to which this thread has turned … but nah, there’s no point in piling on when the runner’s already down and the play has been whistled dead. Let the mods sort out the mess.

Of course, there’s also the part of me that wants to crack a bottle of scotch and wait for the drama to continue. But it’s just 9:20 am here … too early, ya think?

Sadly, nearly every study conducted on professional athletes indicates they are far more likely to engage in domestic violence, mental health issues, and substance abuse than the general population.

It would be good if the NHL implemented better programs to curtail this.

On a lighter note....

Man, if you can't trust a peripatetic anonymous poster on an relatively obscure hockey forum, who can you trust?

Annnnnyway... Bobby Hull, huh?

Can you point out those studies?

I guess my question would be..what on earth would drive someone to misrepresent their age, potentially by as much as three decades, on an internet forum for an entire twenty-year period??? Like…why?????

Is it a “respect” thing? We’d all hear what he has to say as some authoritative expert on many subjects..?

Someone help me understand. It’d be a good time for Big Phil to chime in.

Right now I think everyone just feels duped. Good prank I guess. Really got us!

This reminds of the Seinfeld scene where Jerry's mom asks why George wants her to send postcards from France and Jerry replies "because George is a very disturbed individual".

Ok, but you realize your wasting people's time by pulling off these "pranks" right?

I mean, you had a whole discussion with with users regarding your age, involving a supposedly sick parent who was the original owner of the account for which you had to take over. You even had a private conversation about it with Bear that from the sounds of it, seemed pretty heartfelt.

And when I think of pranks, lighthearted comes to mind. Lying about an ill parent is not that. That's just unnecessarily toying with peoples emotions, some of which, was genuine concern and sympathy

The context matters too, we were talking about a pretty serious subject that was getting heated on both sides. I saw absolutely no indication you weren't serious, and only when you were called out on inconsistencies did you admit to the whole thing being a "prank".

Lastly, this message board for most is ultimately only a small part of our lives, but while we don't know each other, we are all pretty active and passionate on HOH. Particularly the select few members that have been around for a long time. I would bet some of you have known and spent more time with each other than people you know in real life (coworkers, acquaintances, etc). I really don't see it too differently than a hobby, if at all.

So imagine if you did something like this in real life with coworkers or people you only hang out with through certain activities. You don't see how that's a bit messed up?

Not sure what I mean to accomplish typing this long ass post, you probably don't care, much less from someone like myself whom you've never interacted with.

But as someone who has enjoyed your posts through the years, all this "prank" has accomplished (besides giving you enjoyment) is make people trust you less.

I am vague about my age, I really don't know anyone else's age on here. Never really talked about it. I can guess some, just like most can guess mine give or take. When people assume my age I just let it go. Now, it was meant as an insult when it was originally posted on here, so I was fine with the poster thinking I was younger than I am. With me, HOH boards is a hobby, I really don't go to bed at night thinking about other posters. I like the hockey talk and I think about that. I honestly had no idea the obsession the one poster would have about my age. He just didn't let it go. Still doesn't, even though I've said "Hey Dude, I am actually not 40 years old". Anyway, I just don't obsess over it, so I had no idea there would be a poster who I would occupy that much space in his brain to the point where he looks up old posts from different decades to find out my age. I mean, I just didn't expect it. So I thought I'd play along until it got.......................well, depressing.

I don't think any strangers on these boards should dig into our real life time. Or we shouldn't be. Just my opinion.

There are a lot of people in this thread right now for some reason

There’s a reason why he’s doing what he’s doing, Phil. An entirely valid one, at that. You used to enjoy pulling the “age” card during debates. You would tell him (and other posters) that they couldn’t possibly “get it” like you do, since YOU were there. You witnessed careers and moments, you experienced it.

Now, come to find out you were the same age and possibly even younger than the people you were saying this to..a complete misrepresentation of your age..to the point you downright lied. Now the lame excuse last night, the backtracking…people have the right to be enjoying every minute of this.

The Phil you're replying to hadn't read post 610 yet.

For those paying attention: this is nonsense. Phil claimed to be "under 50" and when clear examples of him claiming to be much older were presented, he had to make up the story you see above. Later last night, he came clean, privately recanting this entire thing, claiming he was just "punking" us and he's the same Big Phil he's always been since 2003. But I wasn't born yesterday - I knew there was more to this.

The truth is that he is not the wise, old fan who saw Esposito's whole career. He saw none of it, actually. Phil has been on these boards between the ages of 23 and 42, while pretending to be approximately 20-30 years older than that the entire time. When he took exception to me saying he was "in his 50s" two nights ago, and told me he was not actually that old, he was telling the truth, and broke character to do so. This whole thing about "playing a prank" is a lame attempt at saving face.

Why change your story back to save face? This is why: In 2009, Phil wrote a book. (seriously man, good for you). You may be wondering, why are you just hearing now that Phil wrote a book? If you were in this section in 2009 you may have seen a thread where Phil promoted this book, as though it was written by someone other than him. You must be wondering: If I wrote a book, I wouldn't be able to stop myself from promoting it in the HOH section and taking credit! Yeah, I think a lot of us would feel the same. But a lot of us aren't pretending to be someone else. Phil knew that if he took credit for writing the book, we would all find out he was just 29.

@Felidae explained quite eloquently why this is such a flagrant offense in this post. Seriously Phil, come clean. Admit you're 42, admit you wrote the book, admit you enjoyed playing the stodgy old boomer role all these years. You got us, man, that was the real prank, not all this flip flopping in the past 48 hours.

We don't need to think you're old to respect your hockey insights. Heck, by now you're probably almost as old as you were claiming to be back in 2003! So come clean.

(Note: edited years and age after I realized that the thread was from 2009, not 11-12)

I am not that author Phil Schlenker. I appreciate the accolades. Now, we know him. He is a friend of our family. I tried to pitch his book on here in 2009. My son used an account that the mods didn't like because it was the same IP address. I can still remember the name "Digging Dickie". Anyway, either they didn't like us trying to pitch the book for him or they got mad that we didn't ask them to do it first, either way it didn't really get much publicity on here. I did the whole "Hey has anyone read this new book?" type of thread but it wasn't allowed. I remember telling the mods this is what we were doing for our friend and I almost never mentioned it again because (and I can't remember the mod I talked to) they didn't like anyone starting a new name on it. I am sure there is still a mod that can remember this conversation.

Anyway, we helped him in other avenues. Social media, I sent some emails around to sports writers. It didn't ever get off the ground. I love it though. But it never did anything for him. He has a regular job, wife, kids, etc.

You know, you could backtrack on the whole idea that I pretend I am 30 years older. That is slander when you think of it even if it is on just a hockey site. I did try to promote his book on here and other places just to help out a friend trying to get a name out there. Who the heck pretends their older? I was okay with you thinking I was younger the other day, it was nice. I didn't care for your insulting tone the other day mocking how I thought based on my age. I suppose you could harass Philip himself and ask if he had some friends pitch his book in different places! I mean, really, don't, but this thing really takes up real estate in your mind.
