Behind Blue Eyes
Awww, that's mildly dissapointing. I've been enjoying your posts so far this season. I need to willfully block out that particularly bad opinion again :sarcasm:

Seriously though, by what metric are you saying he has been bad defensively? He is giving up Corsi/Fenwick/Shots, but that is because his line is playing a more free-wheeling game with Tarasenko. Taresenko has cheated a good bit to produce offense. And Barbashev has been holding the fort down. He is 3rd best on the team in GA/60 despite getting caved a bit on shots. That might be do to a unsustainable save percentage, but it also could be due to limiting good scoring chances. Time will tell on that. My eye test hasn't shown any bad plays by him, and several good ones.

xGA, Shots, Corsi, and past history. Despite his insane productivity in the offensive zone, he's been bouncing around 50% in the xGf department because his lines have been allowing as high quality against as they've gotten. In particular, I've noticed him get caught puck watching in the dzone and have a man slip into the slot behind him a few times, and he's been slow recognize and challenge his man in the defensive zone. His past 3 years have had pretty similar results in the dzone even compared to his linemates, so it's hard for me to attribute it directly to him playing more free wheeling hockey. He's been low on actual goals against so far, but he's got a 97% on ice save%

Marek, we hardly knew ye -

According to research by Post-Dispatch sportswriter Tom Timmermann, Hofer is the youngest Blues goalie to appear in a game since Marek Schwarz, who was 20 when he made his debut on Dec. 12, 2006 — a 3-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. Schwarz was chosen in the first round (No. 17 overall) by the Blues in 2004. He played only six NHL games, over three seasons — all with the Blues.

He got his share with ROR and Perron last year, didn't even come close to this level performance, and was replaced by Sanford again. It's not just the production this season, he's been actually creating offense. We'll see if it keeps up.

He didn't do poorly. RoR Xgf% was 10% higher with Barbashev than without. They did not give up a GA in over 100 minutes, so its not even fair to compare GF%. But Barbashev had a net positive effect on all of RoR's stats and advanced stats. As for individual accolades, he was 4th on the team in primary assists/60 (200 minute min) but only 11th in G/60. He might have been a bit snakebit because he was creating chances as he was 2nd to Kyrou in individual High Danger chances per 60. So there is enough in the advanced stats and my memory of the eye test to say he did well with ROR. But at the end of the day, he had 4 minutes of PP time all year and played more with Clifford than RoR. He also had less ES TOI than Clifford, Sanford, or Blias. You cannot expect someone to put up great numbers playing with Clifford, being injured for 1/3 of the year, and getting no PP time when healthy.

IMO the third one he stops if it wasn't tipped perfectly
You still need to close the 5hole better when you go down
Id say outside of the 5-hole, he looked good. Closing the 5-hole faster and nore efficiently is a technique he will beed to work on. Everything else looked great.

Kostin clearly understands the physicality part and it’s why we like him more than the average winger but another late game penalty the other night was terrible.

Whoever pinpointed it as a thing he needs to change about his game seems to have gained knowledge from careful observation.

I agree, it was a bad penalty. I contrast that with the weak tripping call a few games ago.
