If we can get on of the top available d, it would make moving Cole a lot easier.

or give him more time to figure out how to get the tool box open. I'm afraid he may just need a change of scenery. Defensemen generally are much slower to develop. I still see top 4 in him, but he just thinks a complicated game or tries to impress, and he is and needs to be a simple game player.

Andy Strickland ‏@andystrickland

Don't rule out #stlblues adding a forward before deadline. Interesting name im hearing

Assuming the Blues are healthy, where would this person play and who would we have to give up?

While Thornton AND a LHD would make this team an instant contender, the cost to acquire and keep those two things would be immense.

Yeah it would be more then I would like to pay. Thornton just doesn't fit the age range I would prefer for the assets he would cost.

Would be awesome if the Blues signed DeKeyser.

It would be amazing, but the only way he isn't in Detroit next season is if he is in Grand Rapids.

We need to go hard after Å ustr and Schmidt though. Å ustr might not be as good now, but if the improvements he has seen over the last 18 months or so continue then he'll be outstanding. I still want Schwartz for Peoria as well...

It's a shame the Wings defense is such a joke because the Blues could make a pretty damn good sales pitch to DeKeyser by pretty much guaranteeing him a roster spot from Day 1 on a Cup contending team. Management would love it because it's a relatively inexpensive asset that fills a huge need that you don't have to give up anything for and is cost controlled. Looks like MacInnis has been tasked with doing the courting and hopefully Andy Murray can give him a positive word or two about how fun Oshie and Berglund are to go out drinking with in Soulard!

But I'm sure DeKeyser is not starting the year in the AHL. Detroit has a lot of defenseman signed for next season but a couple of those guys have amnesty buyout written all over them.

I'm surprised we haven't spent more time talking about the college free agent market considering our UFA difficulties. Alkhla has mentioned Sustr a few times but if McKenzie is reporting it's down to us, the Wings and Lightning, it's almost like we're trying not to get our hopes up. Better chance of signing him than Suter. Wasn't he a lock to sign with the Wings?

I agree. I think that is a market we need to be more active in given our financial restraints. Overage juniors too.

With 6 games before the trade deadline, Blues lead the field chasing Chicago and Anaheim. What do the Blues do at the deadline? What's your prediction of what will happen?

I hope nothing. Let's get healthy and make a run.

Probably nothing. If something happens, it will probably be something like Cole+. If a blockbuster goes down, I think it would be Perron, but I bet something like that will wait till the summer.

I think we will pass at the prices that will be demanded though.

I like our team and just hope they can keep up their current level of play. Go into the playoffs with Allen as the starter and see what we have this season.

I think it will be a pretty slow deadline for the Blues. Maybe someone like D'Ags gets traded for a depth center. Maybe Elliott for a pick if we run into roster problems. Other than that, I'd be surprised with a major shakeup.

That sturdy, top pairing LHD is a bigger hole than we could've anticipated — even with a healthy line-up, I'm not sure we're poised for a run until the hole is solved. There's a blueprint on how to kill our transition game, and it involves large forwards.

My guess is that we attempt to put a package of a roster player + prospect together in an effort to land our #2...And send off a pick + B-prospect for a forward vet that still has some production left.

If part 1 can't be accomplished, part 2 won't happen and we'll simply stay-pat.

Has your stance on Stewart changed, PN?

I hope we at least add a player at the deadline. We are playing well right now but it's funny how people's opinions change now that Allen saved our *****. This team still isn't good enough to win the Cup, IMO. Either get that LHD, or trade D'Ags or even McDonald for a bigger, grittier forward up front that can play on the 3rd line. I think one of those things will happen, and I'd maybe guess it'll be a forward now just because I think the d-man would be tougher to get, although we do need one.

I know Strickland probably has no idea what's going on but I wonder what forward he's talking about. There's no way it's Thornton. I wouldn't mind getting a guy like Ott....

I think D'Agostini, Cole, Elliott, even McDonald could be the guys whose jobs aren't safe (if any).

Like I said in the other thread, if Sobotka keeps up his play does this move McDonald out of a roster spot? Or when he gets healthy does he just push Sobotka down or Schwartz out? If McDonald was going to the Ducks I would do something like McDonald+2nd or 3rd for Sbisa, but with how well the Ducks are playing I doubt he would get moved.

The only way I see Cole getting moved is for the mythical partner for Pietrangelo. Blues defense is simply too thin to allow movement without getting a proper return.
