They are in tight on cap. Guess they figured weegar and huberdeau woulda cost more and they couldn’t afford.

That will be about the same age ROR will be when his contact is up after we re-sign him

I have a vacation condo in Florida. Do I get to claim Florida and TB as my own?

If Calgary retains these guys or keeps their chill and flips them, it's a bonkers deal. If they hang onto them, fizzle out in the playoffs, and lose them to free agency, that's comically stupid. I hope a GM who can make this deal knows how to handle the loose threads.

I can vaguely see what Florida was thinking. They didn't want to rebuild, they want to build around Ekblad, Barkov, and Knight; so they preferred someone Tkachuk's age to the futures they'd get for their UFA's. But that's still a lot of value to give up without actually icing a better team. Weegar is overrated, but Huberdeau is fantastic.

What a trade for Calgary. For their sake, I hope they can commit to flipping them mid-season if they can't work out extensions.

Florida just destroyed any potential Cup window. They got worse in the short term and their next 1st round pick is in 2026. So they have basically no cheap ELCs coming to support the core in the future. Brutal.

Very, very, very happy that Army didn't try to outbid that offer.

Again. Why would we trade a 24 year old player who's cost controlled and a RFA plus 3 1st round picks for a 29 year old who will be UFA in a year. It's horrible asset management

Huberdeau is similar to Tkachuk in on-ice impact but he's 5 years older and a worse defender. I don't think moving him and giving up a 1st to get certainty on a young and in-prime Tkachuk signed long term for what will likely end up a similar cap hit next year is a bad idea.

Giving up Weegar too, though, seems rough. But I guess it was needed to even out the money and he is also a UFA so if they weren't planning on retaining him anyway I somewhat understand.

I really think a lot of people here were downplaying the value of signing Tkachuk even at the market rate because he's only 24 years old and will be in his prime for essentially the duration of the entire contract instead of just 2-3 years like more typical players who reach UFA at 28 or 29.

Either way not something for us to worry about now. Our future is Tkachuk-less, at least, on the ice.

It does make me wonder if a 1st + Tarasenko + type deal might have been more appealing to Calgary itself than we might think. But obviously considering Tank's cap hit is higher than Huberdeau's and Weegar is definitely not a neutral asset maybe we wouldn't really compete there even with a decent prospect thrown in.

After what happened with Gaudreau and Tkachuk, Calgary should have no problem selling their fanbase on a mid-season sell off of any pending UFA even if the team is firmly in the playoffs. "We can't let stars walk for nothing" will go a long way in that market.

For Florida, if the plan was to build around that core, they should have done a "1 step back to take 2 steps forward" season and traded those guys for 2023 draft capital and 20-22 year old prospects. Adding 3 or 4 high quality futures assets would do way more to support that core than Tkachuk will.

I said for a signed Huber
Again. We keep complaining about giving older players large deals after 30. You want to pay Huberdeau 9+ mil until he's freaking 38? AND pay Kyrou, Neighbors, and 2 first rounders on top of that to get him in the first play? Completely horrid use of assets.

Holy shit!!!! What are the Panthers doing???? Never thought I'd see Huberdeu be traded. Bill Zito seemed great but his recent moves make me question him.
His entire trading for the Past year is insanely stupid. Huberdeau, Weeger, three firsts plus a load of prospects for 1/2 a year of Giroux, 1/2 a year of Chiarot, and 8 years of Tkachuk

Both weegar and hubardeau are year away from UFA too though. Great players but if Calgary can’t resign them is big loss for them. If they can, couid be big win.
If they don’t think they can bring them back they can just flip them for a haul at the deadline. Huberdeau would return something nutty considering what teams give up for meh players like Chiarot and Hagel at the deadline.

Teams in playoff races, and Calgary should be 1st or 2nd in the Pacific, don't sell off pieces like that at the deadline.

Whose gonna be playing defense for Florida? Ekblad/Forsling, then Montour as your 3rd best D man?

For what? Late 1st and 2nd tier prospect? This is only a win for flames if they can keep hubie (and weegar).

When I typed it, I actually didn’t realize Huber was that old. Man, time flies.
