Ceulemans' upside is more on the offensive end. He seems like he could be another Faulk. But Faulk has taken a lot of strides defensively since he arrived, and he arrived as a veteran already. Ceulemans is going to take time defensively, but will have that offensive skill. I think if we think Parayko is going to stay, RD is less of an issue. One of the reasons I favor Lambos is because projecting forward, Scandella isn't the guy we wanted him to be, Dunn seems like he'll either be traded or ED'd, and Peru is a PMD in the vein of Dunn. There's an easier path to top 4 on the left side than the right, barring Parayko leaving. Lambos is more what we lack in a stay-at-home defenseman where as Ceulemans' strong suit is what Parayko, Faulk, Krug, Peru, and Dunn (again, who knows if he'll be here) all bring. If we needed a PMD, then the scales would tip to Ceulemans. As is, I think the hole is bigger on LD a year or two from now when these guys would be coming into the picture. And the hole in defensive defensemen is bigger. Mikkola is a nice player, but I'm not sure many are safe projecting him to top 4.
If we draft a defenseman at 16 we are realistically looking at 3-4 years before he is ready to impact our lineup. Our D could be quite different by then. Take BPA.

Blues have drafted at #17 exactly THREE times:
2009 - David Rundblad (flipped for the Tarasenko pick a year later)
2004 - Marek Schwarz (top rated European goalie who "somehow" fell to the Blues at 17)
1998 - Barret Jackman (who, as long-time posters might know, inspired my moniker waaaay back when, prior to subsequent banishments from the STLToday forums.) Mike Smith can eat a big fat ****.

Needless to say, I'm hoping we pick a forward at #17 this year. In order of who I'd want, that may be available (Eklund, Beniers, Geunther & Johnson will be long gone by then):

McTavish
Lucius
Sillinger
Coronato
Svechkov

I would be thrilled to come away with any of the last three names there, probably in the order that you have them. Eklund is a guy I would love to be there when the Blues pick though I suspect you are right and he will be long gone. Lucius is interesting but, as I noted earlier, I get concerned when you're looking at a guy in the first 20 picks whose skating is a concern. Bolduc is another guy I have started to like as I dug into the first rounders this year and will likely be there when the Blues pick. I'm pretty indifferent about a lot of the defenseman that might be there, though I would be ok if they took Lambos depending on how the board breaks.

After doing a lot of reading About this draft I would like the Blues to pick Mathew Cranato. This organIzation is really depleted of top end scorers. Anyone have any other insight on him. Go Blues

If these were your options who would you take?

1) Fabian Lysell
2) Carson Lambos
3) Corson Ceulemans

If Lambos would be our pick, I'd be happy. I can live with Ceulemans as well. Not a fan of Lysell though. I know some rate him quite high, but I think there are better players available.

Players that are potentially available with our pick (or have a small chance to fall to our pick) in order of who I'd pick first (and over Lysell):
Lucius
Sillinger
Lambos
Svechkov
Coronato
Ceulemans
Samoskevitch
Pinelli
Chibrikov
Othmann
Cossa

I'm pretty sure Rutherford's logic for speculation is say the exact opposite of what he previously said, that way he can never be wrong lol.

Will any NHL team trade their first-round draft pick?

They are listening (but it won’t happen)

St. Louis Blues

Blues Doug Armstrong has not shied away from dealing first-rounders in the past to improve his team. He sent two of them to Philadelphia in 2017 to get Brayden Schenn. With the Blues in win-now mode, he might strike again, but with the team’s prospect pool in need of some replenishing, a case could be made for keeping the pick. -Jeremy Rutherford

All of your Vladimir Tarasenko trade questions, last-minute expansion debate and offseason options: Blues mailbag

Do the Blues use their No. 17 pick? – Jered B.

They need to use it because they can get a much-needed quality player in their system, but I have a sneaky suspicion that Armstrong will need to use it in a deal.

Not Lysell.

You're deciding between LHD Lambos and RHD Ceulemans.

I have Lambos as a clear 5th best D so I'd take him depending on what his medical records show but his ranking is all over the place.

Ceulemans is another guy who scouts have a difference of opinion on that's reflected in his wide range of placement in various rankings.

If I had only these three players to choose from I'd take Lambos. Thank goodness we have the ability to choose another player not listed or even trade back to acquire an extra pick. Trading back from 16 to the late 1st/early 2nd and getting back into the 2nd round as a payment for trading back looks really good to me right now.

I'm all about that William Stromgren action and we could get him late 1st/early 2nd in the trade back scenario I described.

Seems like guys I think we would most want won’t be there when we are scheduled to pick. I expect we trade pick, either for more immediate help or trade back.

Feels like it kind of got lost in all the other hoopla but draft is tonight. Hoping for Coronato but there’s a handful of guys I’d be ok with taking.

Ideally, we end up with one of:

Sillinger
Lambos
Coronato
Svechkov

If not, my goal is at least to be less disappointed than last year. We should be in a good spot though IMO.

I’d be good with Othmann or Pinelli as well

Hadn't followed this kid very much, but he could be in the mix for the 16th player selected:

NHL Draft prospect Brennan Othmann is a goal scorer and 'ultra-high achiever' in pursuit of his hockey dream
He’s got that Marchand quality to him of playing a skill-agitation style of game. Doubt he plays as well as Marchand but he’s a good bet to be a quality middle-six forward that could chip in for 40 - 50 points if he hits his potential. I think he’s quite underrated in the draft and put him in my top-20 comfortably.

the only issue I have with him is that you sound like you have a lisp every time you say his name out loud.
