I hope our amateur scouts have learn lesson. If there is talented prospect and even he is small you take him, height cant be excuse.

In Blues we have bad habit to draft tall players (Blues type of player) and not go after best player available.

Let DeBrincat, Aho, Point and Caufield be good examples why you draft talented small forward.

And yes I'm talking only for forwards not dmens.

BS

For every Alex Debrincat there are a dozen Nate Walker's floating around the various minor Leagues that never amount to anything.
There's a reason there are only 19 players in the League that are below 5'10"(and that only extends to 36 below 5'11"). The bust rate is insanely high.
9 times out of 10, taking an undersized player is a waste of a pick. Unless you are completely sold on the guy producing, it's stupid to waste your draft capital that way.

Height may not be "everything", but it is absolutely a factor in the NHL. And you are being disingenuous at best to claim otherwise.

Kyrou was selected before DeBrincat. It’s not like Kyrou was some physical specimen.

Aho was selected before we had a chance to pick. We then selected a smaller defenseman in Dunn.

In 2014 we selected Fabbri. He was a very small player. That same draft Point was taken rounds later. A lot of teams missed on him.

The point being that we don’t shy away from smaller players and we either don’t have the option to select the best performing small players of a draft, we select a different small, talented player or most teams missed on that small talented player.

So are we never supposed to pick taller players? Also, many of us were not happy with that pick, but we got ROR out of it so, I am not losing sleep over it. And I would much rather have ROR over anyone we could have drafted with that pick.

Most of the rest of our picks in the top 2 rounds over the last seven drafts have been players 6’ or smaller in height. It’s not like we are picking large players at the expense of skill either. All of the bigger guys have been skilled.

Look, I am all for picking skilled players, but the Blues have not shied away from those guys.

I love classic Finnish names like Brad Lambert :sarcasm:
If De La Rose can be a Swedish name, then, Lambert can be a Finnish name, even if it isn't Suomalainen (a traditional Suomi name)÷.

There are a lot of Norwegians now, with Vietnamese names. It is funny to hear them speaking on remote islands, or in remote mountain areas, or remote fjords, in the local dialects, perfectly as the locals do.

There is a soccer player who plays for Chile named Ben Brereton!

Totally agree, and to add to your post,

The only notable players at 5'9":
Gaudreau, Krug, Marchand, Gallagher, Grzelcyk, Gourde, Marchessault, Spurgeon, Arvidsson

5'8":
Atkinson, Zuccarello, Yamamoto

5'7":
DeBrincat

The smaller they get, the bigger the chance they'll bust. I wouldn't rule out drafting a player shorter than 5'10", as long as they're REALLY good, but I would probably think twice and doublecheck if there really isn't another interesting player before doing so. And I'd probably draft them lower then where they're ranked.

For example, I wouldn't use a first round pick on Logan Stankhoven (5'8") and would only consider drafting him if he's available in the 2nd or later (in the Blues case 'later', as we don't have a 2nd).

Victor Sjoholm, Connor Lockhart, Justin Robidas, Marcus Almquist, Xavier Simoneau, Braeden Kressler, Jeremy Wilmer and Trevor Wong would all be on my do-not-draft list.

However, taller-ish, skilled players with a low bodyweight could be interesting as they could benefit greatly from growing into their frame and thus can quickly become more impactful. Blues pick Tanner Dickinson fits this mold as he's at 6'0" and when he was drafted he weighed something around 150 lbs.

Examples for this draft: Ville Koivunen, Aleksandr Kisakov, Vladislav Lukashevich, Jack O'Brien and Ryan McCleary.

And if we're talking about drafting, I also hope the Blues will capitalize on underexposed OHL-players.

Wyatt Johnston is probably going in the 2nd (he could've been a first round pick in a normal season). Joe Vrbetic is an interesting big goalie that could go in the 4th. Bryce Montgomery is a 6'5" righthanded defenseman who's actually a decent skater for his size that could go in the 4th-7th.

However, my favorite potential draftpick from the OHL is Ryan Winterton. He's a 6'2" two-way center prospect, good skater, good hockey IQ, great backchecker. And he's also one of the youngest draft eligible players available. He seems like a great value pick in the 3rd.

GIVE US LAMBOS!!!! But honestly. I'd be thrilled with any of those from 10-22, minus Cossa and Wallstedt. I don't believe in picking goalies in the first round. But, that's just me.

I haven't followed the draft the last couple of years as closely as I did before, but even if it's a weird, mediocre draft, I'm excited. Look at the guys chosen in the middle of the first round in the last handful of years. Morissey, Pulock, Larkin, Tuch, Barzal, Connor, Chabot, McAvoy, Kunin, Chychrun. And we have yet to see how more recent years will pan out. There are more than a couple players on average in the mid-late teens who have become impact players. Sure, some of those players have been duds, too, but I'm confident enough in Blues drafting that I don't think they'll brick.

They might only get a career #4 D or a #5 winger, but the highest they've drafted since snagging Schwartz and Tarasenko is 20th, where they got Thomas. Even in a weak draft, there's a significant difference between 16th overall and picking in the 20's. 16th is still early enough that you can snag a slider or get the jump on a riser; and the price for trading up to the low teens is not nearly as steep as it is from, like, 25.

Look at the goaltenders of the top 4 teams this year. Price, Vasilevsky, MAF, and Varlamov were all taken in the first round. Montreal is the perfect example of why you build from the net outwards, and Toronto is the perfect example of why you don't build from the front backwards.

I think our goalie is Stanley cup quality :DD

I could also say look at the goalies who won a cup in the past 10 years (2011 until now) Only two of them have been a first round pick. We also already have very good goalie prospects in the system with Ellis and Hofer, even Zherenko is looking like a good prospect. Blues have a much bigger hole on the Left side of the lineup.

Could those two be better than Binnington in the coming years? Yeah, they could and probably SHOULD.

But with the holes this team has, I’d be surprised if they pick one (if both even make it that far).

3 of them were drafted over a decade ago. 2 aren’t on original team. This is a fluke that all 4 were 1st rounders. As said above, it’s not typical.

Most goaltenders are not taken in the first round. That's why it's atypical. However, there are goaltenders that are so good that teams won't let them get to the second round. That will be the case for 2 goaltenders (Wallstedt and Cossa) this year.

Sure, but it’s not generally case that you need 1st round goalie to win in league. Since it’s i think strongest position of organizational depth, probably wouldn’t be wise for us to take one.

I have no problem drafting a goalie in the 1st if they have easily the most value of guys left on the board. Having said that, I don't like the pieces we have to draft a goalie yet. You shouldn't have a bare prospect cupboard and draft a goalie. You don't build from the crease out. It took Montreal over a decade to build a contender around Price. Varly is playing in a scheme where the goalie is the least important, which is why him, Lehner, and Sorokin have all put up stellar numbers. Vasy is the best goalie in the game, but also happens to be on the best built overall team in the NHL. The Ducks have been trying to rebuild around Gibson for a minute and it'll still take them 2-3 more years at the earliest before they are a good, playoff team.

Cossa and Wallstedt have high elite potential. If one of those players falls to STL, it's a no brainer to take one of them. You take the best player available and go from there. Just because the Blues already have goaltender prospects doesn't mean they can't trade them.
