Full game thoughts will be tomorrow. Starting to warm back up, it really wasn't that cold but outside for ~10 hours is alot for these playoffs games haha. This game certainly felt like last year. Didn't try to give it away quite as much, but the final score really flattered the Lions. It was pretty much complete domination from the Bombers start to finish, beat both teams they faced out on the field today (the white and orange team showed little resistance, but the white and black team was working hard to keep it close). There's really no reason this team shouldn't steam roll to a 3rd straight championship but you never know with 1 game show downs.

It wasn't a great night for Collaros. He looked confident early, but I think Sayles cheated on his zone on that endzone pick after Collaros hesistated. After that he looked unsure of where the defense was going to be. He wasn't quite as sharp hitting throwing windows as we've seen in the past. His health is still going to be story #1 for the Bombers this week, even though I think he'll be fine.

Oliveira and the run game won this game. BC couldn't stop the run at all this game, and a bunch of the passes were really just modified runs (shovel passes) as well. BC's defensive front was pushed consistently off the line of scrimmage, but even when they got the lanes plugged up a few great cuts by Oliveira had the Bombers with positive movement every time Oliveira got the ball. He added a few catches in space as well. Career best game in Oliveira's young career at a key time. Jets should probably take notes, this is how you draft and develop players.

OL was solid top to bottom. Collaros was fairly clean, the run blocking was awesome. They used alot of big packages with Kolankowski and Dobson rotating in quite often. The Prukop package was hugely successful, and in part that was Prukop looking great, but the OL really helped out there. The one penalty was a super weak holding call on Gray.

Not much to talk about in terms of WR. Quiet night pretty much all around, Demski being the standout. Demski contributed with a big long catch early, as well as use in the extension of the run game later. But despite a holding call on a Oliveira TD run late he was really good in blocking as well. Very underrated aspect of this whole group of WR, they are great blockers. Wolitarsky was used as a blocking TE nearly as often as he ran routes. Ellingson was quiet, Schoen had really just the TD. But again they were asked to do much.

Overall you'd like to see the passing game get more traction, but they did what they needed to last night.

Defence
Buoyed by massive struggles from the opposing QB but still a great performance from the whole unit. The self-styled "Dark Side" defence has been up and down for most of the second half. This was definitely an up game. The came in fully prepared to force the limited Rourke into situations he didn't want to be in and they did. Bombers decided the best way to take advantage of Rourke was to rush 3/4 and drop 8/9 into coverage. Keep him in the pocket and force him to beat them from the pocket. The DL did a great job on that. He got away just once that I can recall and Willie tracked him down quickly (again Rourke would have gotten away from Willie pre-injury, IMO). Not alot of consistent pressure, but BC was keeping 6 in blocking v the 3/4 man rush so that's to be expected. Left Rourke with few options downfield.

The DB's had some help with a few errant throws, but overall a real solid game for them. Can't imagine was Hamilton saw Desmond Lawrence that they needed to release him but he's been a real solid late season addition. I wish he'd dropped that pick as the Bombers lost about 40 yards in field position and I thought he was just outplayed on the one O'Shea challenged on (no offensive PI, IMO) but overall a solid game. Nichols or Parker (can't recall which) were beat early over the middle, but outside of that were shut down. Nichols in particular was on Rhymes like glue and broke up some key plays. Rose kept everything in front of him and even got a right place, right time INT.

The LB corps didn't have all that much to do to be honest. Played a lot of coverage, but they stepped up any time BC even thought about doing a running play. The running game really told the difference in this one.

Special Teams
Overall, this was an ugly night for them I'd have to say. With a few moment of beauty. Janarion Grant taketh, Janarion Grant giveth kind of night. That early drop was unacceptable and he followed it up by dropping the kick off just minutes later. If he didn't have fumble issues I am 100% certain this guy would be an elite NFL returner. As is, he still showed why he is worth the risk of those fumble issues with that return later on the first half. He ran probably nearly 200 yards for that ~80 yard punt return TD. Those wheels are impressive. He was consistently flipping the field on returns in a way Williams didn't other than the missed convert.

As for the missed convert, I'll get into that, but first I'd like to highlight a coaching mistake on BC's part. IMO. Liegghio misses a convert and Williams takes it back 105 yards back to the Bombers endzone. Then Bombers line up to kick. Now Williams had to run probably 150 yards straight out for the 2 points. Then had to come back down the field the other way again to receive the ensuing kickoff. BC's coach needs to use a different returner there. Williams was exhausted. I told the people I attend games with before the kickoff that it was a mistake. And sure enough Williams receives the ball and starts jogging up the field with it. Enter Mike Miller. Williams is too tired to notice/avoid him and gets knocked out cold by the looks of it. It was a legal hit from what I could tell, it was just an exhausted player unable to protect himself. But what a hit.

Can't get away without talking Liegghio. I will point out his directional punting was on point again. I thought he probably could have put more on that late punt to try to get it to the endzone to make it a 9 point game, but otherwise solid game punting. But the misses on kicks today were just unacceptable. Had we made the converts, this game is over long before it was. 1/3 on converts, in fact Bombers were outscored 2-1 on THEIR converts because of that return. That should be a +3 for Bombers, ends up -1. 4 point swing on converts, would have been a 12 point lead late and game over. Idk what it is about home converts and road in BC. Basically all of Liegghio's misses happened at home on converts or in BC. Very odd.

That blocked punt penalty was complete horseshit. I don't want to end up focusing on the stripes CFL too much, but it was a very poorly officiated game. Blocked punt, Collaros gets a grouding when he missed his intended receiver by less than 2 yards, phantom hold on Gray. Bombers are the big bad and they will be playing against two teams again next Sunday. It is what it is. Sukh Chung should be facing a suspension next season for his cheap shot on Malik Clements on the final play. Absolutely no need for that type of hit when the game was clearly over.

Overall onto the Grey Cup! Can't wait, a 3 peat potential. Just imagine being in this position 4 years ago. I couldn't have dreamed this. Go Bombers!

In his post-game presser last night, Collaros said he's playing next week "no question." Players sometimes are more hopeful than they should be, but let's hope that's accurate. Certainly sounds like good news, though

Really appreciate your "game thoughts" and will add a few of mine:

Yes, Collaros was a tad off yesterday. Having damaged my ankles on several occasions, I am concerned about his ankle. It's my experience that it probably felt OK for a few hours post-injury (adrenaline and all that stuff) but the swelling would come later and will persist for a couple of days. X-rays/MRI either last night or today will hopefully show no fractures. Fingers crossed. Hopefully, it's a sprain/bruise that with rest and treatment will come around before Sunday. I expect he won't practice much this week.

On the D-side, the addition of Darby and Lawrence and especially the return of Alexander has made a huge difference. And, starting Clements, Bighill and Darby at the LB positions instead of having Gauthier (way too slow) out there was a difference maker, too.

Special teams: Grant, for reasons unknown to me, has for several games now been electing to field a lot of kicks on the bounce resulting in....well, we saw what happened yesterday. Of course, he has the habit of redeeming himself. There was another time yesterday on a punt, when he took it on the fly at the sideline near the Bomber 40 and immediately stepped out of bounds. From my vantage point in the stadium, it appeared that the punt would have been OB on the fly at our 40ish. Had he let it go out, a 10 yard penalty to Lions would have been called, I believe.

Legghio still having convert issues is a major concern, especially with similar if not worse conditions expected for the Big Game. However, a friend who watched the game at home, claims that replays show that the first convert attempt was good. (I haven't checked.)

I also agree about the officiating. I would imagine that yesterday's WF officiating crew won't be assigned the Grey Cup game.

Oliviera did win this game. So pumped for our shot at a 3 peat.

Thanks Holden, if I ever meet you in person I will buy you a beer in payment for your investigative reporting. :) (If beer is your drink).
