In my opinion there was no storm in Winnipeg that could compare to 1966. Drifts right up to the rooftops on many houses. One hella of a workout to shovel it all out. Not many people had snow blowers in those days.
Imagine if this current blizzard had happened 5 or 6 weeks ago, before any of the spring melt had occurred. That's what happened in '66--fewer inches of snow in March '66 than now, but piled on top of a full winter base.
I was just a kid , so the drifts were 3 times my height. It was awe-inspiring, literally.

Jets are really "feelin' it" soaking up the sun in Florida, pretty sure the WAG's and kids are a little peeved
I'm sure more than a few wives and girlfriends made their way to Florida for a mini vacation. Even with kids in tow since the city is shutdown and we are going into the Easter long weekend. Can't imagine anyone attached to that kind of money is riding it out in the Peg if they don't have to.

March 66 snow to the top of our roof. The doors could not be opened. We laughed when Dad came home from work having walked from Sherburn to St. James and was locked outside. He was not happy.

Ah, the joy we all felt as children when it snowed.

More bad news:

750,000 people trapped living in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG – The Red Cross is reporting at least 750,000 people are still trapped living in Winnipeg carrying on with their day-to-day lives. The evacuation remains at a standstill as delusional residents continue to inhabit the city facing years of powerful snow storms that knock out electricity to floods that inundate sections of the city.

“These people have endured so much,” said an official from the Red Cross who has been helping residents relocate to a hospitable climate capable of sustaining human life. “We estimate that at any time, at least 5% of the population is trapped in a slushy snowbank.”

The Red Cross and other aid organizations have made an effort to raise awareness among the exhausted community that other cities in Canada do, in fact, exist. “I have made so many attempts to flee the city for safer ground,” said local Levi Stutzma. “But I am forced back every time I reach the Perimeter Highway remembering that I have a job, wife, and kids here. Plus, the Bombers are doing good this season.”

Much like Stockholm Syndrome where hostages become loyal to their captors, Winnipeg Syndrome is a condition whereby repeated exposure to abusive weather and traffic conditions make residents want to stay longer, say psychologists.

“Some longtime residents even take pride that their city is under constant threat of an icy obliteration,” said UBC psychologist Victoria Anders. “Bragging that you can easily freeze to death in an early fall snow storm is quite perplexing and merits further research.”

:D

Anyone long time Winnipeggers like me a little unimpressed with this storm?

I know they closed the schools and highways, but, it seems a little underwhelming to me.

Based on the news coverage the past few days I was expecting to see Bruce Willis driving a snowplow!

I was kinda expecting snow mad max.

it's rotating all around us right now. We're right in the eye lol...but we might get hammered a bit over night and tomorrow. But what are the weather people going to do really? If it looks like it could be bad they pretty much have to put the word out. It wouldn't be great if they didn't raise the alarm and the shit totally hit the fan.

I spent the day shoveling the snow off my deck, once an hour. If I wait until it stopped, I'd never be able to get through it all

2 years of not going to the gym have left their toll

But at least my yard is now ready for the next phase of the storm.

The storm hasn't run its course yet. These posts are like the weather equivalent of saying the word "shutout" with 5 mins left in the 3rd period.

Worst part of this storm is on Sunday APRIL 17th WE ARE GOING TO BE -20c :banghead:

well...over night Saturday it's looking cold but both Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be around -2 during the day...

-7 tomorrow during the day though. Gotta love being 15 or 16 degrees below normal. I don't think we've managed to hit a "normal" daily temp for this time of year more than once or twice this "Spring." Normal right now is 10 degrees and we might get within 2 degrees of that next Tuesday before it snows some more.

This was the weather radar as of about 7:20 am April 14. The centre of this thing (the eye) is sitting on its ass in Minnesota since yesterday - we are missing much of the worst of it in southern MB - the cyclonic movement of cloud bottom right never actually hit the province.

Southeast ND and MN are getting hammered, but not us.

Just unbelievable and horrible, looks like a very short summer this year.
Dude, we will be fine. You'll be golfing your ass off in a couple of weeks, slugging back the Goose Island, wallowing in the glow of your 3 litre zirconium-faced driver, forged and balanced by Tibetan monks (who themselves only drink wines crushed with the fruit of premier cru Medoc ancient french vines) with a shaft forged from the core of the Neutron Star TM , hand-flown by Nike executives from the Pleiades to your golf course Pro shop, and with golf balls caressed and dimpled by the hand of Aphrodite herself (and then infused with the latest Marisilicon X chip with GPS capabilities). :)

P.S. I've just got to find me a white belt, its so utterly vanilla.
