If the team wants him they want make it work. They aren’t going to let him walk over the 3-4 million that much I can tell you. I think he’s a fine backup but I’ll be honest I don’t know what the market price is for average backup goalies in the nhl is it less than 3-4 million?
On the one hand considering they're only paying $3 million for Vanecek the next two years, it's not like they're allocating a lot of resources to the goalie position even if they overpay a backup. On the other hand, assuming Vanecek is still the starter by the end of the year (I don't assume that with both the way Blackwood's played lately and the organization's seeming boner for him) it's next to impossible to see them paying a backup more than the starter, or as much as one. Which they'd be doing if they just went with the arb number for Blackwood...so either they'd have to sign him longer term - blocking the young goalies - or trade him.

Guys MacBlack isn’t returning a big package at the deadline and 110 point playoff teams don’t trade their 1b goalie going into the playoffs. It just doesn’t happen.

i didn't think this needed to be said but exactly what he said. i'm going out on a limb and saying blackwood will be back next year.

i think you just look at the goalie landscape out there and you aren't going to find a backup that is equally capable with similar upside that blackwood has for cheaper then 3 million. so i don't think they have a problem paying blackwood more then vitek its just the way the timelines fell. now if they think schmid is the guy and hes ready then yeah he walks but if they don't? i just really don't see the devils for once getting decent goaltending looking to rock the boat after multiple years of brutal goaltending.

We could have Schmid for under a million a year, who isn't any worse than Blackwood and may even be better.

and how has Blackwood done the last 3 years?

again, what is even your point? that Blackwood is better than Vanecek? You pick the weirdest fights

I guess we know how good the team is by looking at Blackwood’s stats? I think that’s what we all learned here?

Which is kind of hard because Blackwood has never strung together two good months together in his career, but I guess the team has been very streaky.

@Bleedred is gonna be so mad when he reads that lol
No I'm not

What's he gonna say? They can't wait to let him go this offseason?

And maybe he does have a lot of faith in him? It doesn't look like this organization is gonna be able to show him that faith though, as that's too steep a qualifying offer. Especially when we're a cap team. We made that mistake with Miles Wood this last summer and now we're paying for it, not only by having a seemingly unbenchable player (that's more on Ruff though) and by it taking up cap space we could use at the deadline. Any million dollar a year player could have done what he's done.

I still maintain he could be replaced by Schmid next year at no drop off in performance, if not even better. And less than a third of the price.

See there ya go. I agree with that last part, I've been pumping Schmid's tires for a long while now. So much so in fact that I think Schmid could eventually surpass Vanecek.

I personally liked Novo's comment that Blackwood "has proven to be a solid 1B option this season".
I personally thought it was BS and false, because Blackwood hasn't been a 1b this year.

To be a 1b, that would imply you play at least close to half the games and Blackwood has not played close to half the games this year.

Now while he was injured for 6 or 7 weeks, he hasn't even played half the games since he's come back. The only time he was really a 1b (he was probably more like the 1a at that time) was the first 3 or 4 weeks of the season before he was injured.

If he said ''Solid backup option'' fine. Not solid 1b option. He's been used as the backup pretty much since the start of the calendar year and has played the workload of a backup since then.

I do clearly remember there was a point before Christmas where he play considerably over half the games that he was actually dressed for, but that hasn't been the case since the new year.

I don’t clearly remember anything anymore.
