blackwood will give you great games terrible games and average games that will go either way which is pretty much going to be the norm for backup nhl goalies. completely fine with him riding it out until they let him go in the summer for schmid people looking to ditch him because he sucks just don't understand or care to understand the insurance policy.

This board should probably make peace with the idea that Blackwood will be here all year, in a backup role, and be at worst mediocre at it with a few blow ups. The cathartic feeling you may get from releasing him will not be worth it.

The only other possibility I really see is they trade him for Reimer or someone like that.

This is exactly where I'm at with Blackwood. If he can get on a run and prove doubters wrong. That's obviously a win win. I see a big athletic goalie. Which is generic as a professional hockey goaltender.

I still think he's not good, but last night was his best game of the year.

It's weird that when he plays bad some people act like it's all the defense, then when he plays good those same people act like it's all him.

There are some games where the defense/team plays amazing in front of him, like that Islanders game earlier in the year where he hardly had to do anything.

But I think last night was more him than anything. We didn't play that well, although we did in the 3rd period. I thought we gave up too many chances for sure, which was probably to be somewhat expected playing 5D for about 57-58 minutes of the game.

If you think he’s gonna be here in a backup role, well I’m warning you get ready for him to start five of the next seven games, and certainly tomorrow. Blackwood’s game last night and Vanecek in Carolina gives them the perfect excuse to do what they’ve been dying to do anyway

If he gets blown up against Boston they'll probably be back to Vitek for the next Boston game after the break, which will be over a week since his last game.
Haven't heard a thing about Bernier. I'm thinking he's probably perhaps done al together?
I'd say we've seen the last of him. Likely in the NHL.

Even if he's healthy by September of 2023 or even June for that matter, I don't think anyone is signing a goalie that'll be 35 years old that will have not played an NHL game in very close to 2 years.

And it's not like if Lundqvist somehow decided not to retire in 2021 and was able to play again. Bernier doesn't exactly have that legacy thing. If there's goalies that can afford an injury like that and going an entire year without playing at that age and then expecting a contract? Bernier just isn't one of them. If Rask hadn't come back last year and decided to give it a go this season, I'd say there'd be some suitors. He had the same injury too.

The league does love their retread goalies, as we know, but I don't know if they like retread goalies that are 35 and haven't played in literally 22 months, which is what it will be in October of 2023, should Bernier not play this year.

Gives us names then instead of these generalizations.

Fact is there were what...3 posters (myself included) that posted something positive about Blackwood in this thread after last night's game, whereas we would've gotten 3 pages of posts if he shit the bed. Hopefully he can keep it up.

He had a good game last night - I was a little uncomfortable with some of the rebounds he was giving up, but can't fault him for either goal. Defense let him down in both situations.

Well, I'm not really looking to mudsling and specifically call posters out, but usually the first guy to constantly blame the defense/team is a guy that..... Let's just say his name references a goalie of the past and it wasn't a very good goalie either.

The other one suggested last year we were crazy for thinking David Rittich (and Hynes lol) was no good. I noticed at least one post from that poster last night about how this game is not 1-1 (I think that was what the score was at the time) if not for Blackwood. Yet this poster is very reluctant to blame Blackwood when he plays poorly.

I was actually saying within the last week, I wouldn't be surprised if he does end the losing streak, but that overall I don't really think he's a good goalie or that he'll play well over a significant sample of games.

Only I think I expected him to play against Carolina, who he had better numbers against coming into last night, but he had only played Carolina 2 times (once was a shutout and both were wins, but both were also in 18-19 and 19-20) and I think this was only his fourth time playing Florida and the first two were wins and the loss was when he was yanked down there last year.

It will be a tandem I think with Blackwood as 1B at best. Backups spell starters when they struggle. I think by the end of the year when the accounting is done though he'll be seen as the backup and won't start game 1 of the playoffs. It would take a miracle cup run for NJ to qualify him I think and he won't be here next year.

Just hope he's good what more can you do?

i haven't met 1 person on here that thinks he is good. but in a backup roll he is fine and more then suitable to finish the year in that role.

There’s people who have said he was good or at least they think he will be again. And that he has elite upside. That’s a direct quote. I normally (unless I’m half kidding) don’t make these things up, even if sometimes I exaggerate the number of people saying these things. Just like “Best goalie in the world since Hynes was fired” was actually a direct quote a couple of years ago.

It’s been said several times by one poster recently that he’s the only goalie on the roster or maybe even the organization who has elite upside.

I’m not sure he ever had elite upside. Maybe after the first two seasons.

Obviously he had a higher ceiling than somebody like Vanecek, though it doesn’t look like he’s gonna hit that higher ceiling anymore.

It’s kind of like how Michael McLeod certainly had a higher ceiling than Miles Wood, but it certainly doesn’t look at all like he’ll ever hit that higher ceiling than Wood.

Look I’m glad Blackwood rewarded your faith in him and he played very well last night. But maybe you should wait more than one game before trying to convince all of us he is an elite goalie.

Backup, eh?

You didn’t think Ruff would play the goalie that got us our first win after 6 losses?

Vanacek isn’t Hellebuyck and has had some rough games recently, I don’t see how anyone can’t blame Ruff for going with the hot hand here.

Of course I did, I predicted it a few posts back…I’m just making light of the people who said Blackwood was only gonna be a backup
