Every goalie gets the colorado bump so I'm not too worried about blackwood being only slightly better than George. Losing Kovalenko sucks I thought he had potential

I’m nowhere near a goalie expert, but I kinda like that Blackwood excels against high quality shots. Most people say the Avs “just need average goaltending” because they’re so good but in reality a lot of the Avs in recent years have given up a lot of high quality chances and are in the bottom 10 this year.

Yes the Avs would love to finally have a simple goalie who can make “the simple save” and Blackwood definitely resembles something like that. But he’s also capable of stealing games and making those big saves he has no business making as well and sometimes with the defensive breakdowns of this team, they need that.
Yeah, I have watched mulitple San Jose games this season and Blackwood has made some good saves and does not seem to give up soft goals either.

Kovy has been working on his checking game, which is a necessity for a winger in a Jared Bednar system. He is best when he goes to the net and that's probably the only way he will score goals. He is not like Kaut bad, so you've got that going for you.

In case anyone cares... it could actual be a 4th (ours or VANs) going to SJ, not a 5th

The 2025 fifth-round pick going going to San Jose could become the worse of Colorado's two fourth-round picks if two of these three conditions are met:

* The Avalanche reach the Western Conference Final this season.
* Blackwood wins 25 games from Monday through the end of the regular season.
* Blackwood starts 30 games from Monday through the end of the regular season.

If we had been guaranteed a week ago that Georgiev would be traded, the party and excitement in here would have been fabulous.

Now, all of a sudden, losing Kovalenko is a tragedy.

Now, all of a sudden, a 2nd round pick is more valuable than Gold.

Now, all of a sudden, after our new back-up pitched a shutout, this is a bad trade.

JFC.
Exactly this. We got rid of our biggest problem not only on the ice but guessing he wasn't exactly a great locker room guy either.

Did we overpay, probably, but nobody wanted George. GMs have seen his play over the last season and a half and aren't stupid.

Like Kuemper I agree this is an overpay, but I like the move for whats available out there.

CMac blew it by taking so long, but here we are and i'd rather have this then wait til the deadline.

I would have preferred Gibson but oh well. This just shows Georgiev's real value. Losing Kovy sucks, but if I'm honest I would have been more pissed if they traded away Ivan.

I watched part of Gibson's last game on the weekend and he was leaky... to say the least. I mean, anyone can have a bad game but there's certainly the potential for the Avs to have paid MORE to acquire Gibson and they end up with the same problem in net for another 2 years after this one.

If Blackwood doesn't work out, the Avs can walk away... but I think he'll be fine. Not a world beater but Kuemper-level adequate-good goaltending.

If Blackwood plays so well that we are convinced of him being the solution for years to come, it has obviously resulted in a deep playoff run.

How much do you think his contract is going to cost at that point?

Depends when the Avs re-sign him. If they do it near the end of a strong regular season, then it could look like the Joey D'Accord contract. If it's after a deep run in the playoffs, it could be more but keep this in mind - even after Adin Hill helped the vgk win the Cup, he still only signed a 2 year deal for $4.9M per year. That's also a goaltender that was obtained from San Jose.

I wonder if the Altitude suckups will change their commentary when talking about the Georgie since he is gone now. He got traded to SJ, there is nothing he could have done about that! ;)

Avs fans! I cannot find an actual decent explanation of the kind of player Kovalenko is and I'm very curious. From what I gather he's a fast, sorta-skilled guy who is just getting his chance to play this year and is still adapting to NHL ice? What do you think his ceiling his? How has he looked for you so far? I feel like half the posts are like OH NO HE'S ONE OF OUR BEST PROSPECTS and the other are WHO CARES HE'S BARELY A BOTTOM 6 FORWARD so I don't know what's real.

Thanks! As I said on the main board, Blackwood has actually been fantastic this year and has had some incredible saves. He does his best when he sees a lot of rubber but he's been very good and it's a smart bet to take, I think. Also, Givanni Smith is actually a good 4th liner in my opinion, we just have a lot of them. He's fast and sometimes surprises you with his hands.
The second round pick is the big prize here. Kovalenko was VERY good in an inferior league (come at me KHL fans) in part due to being so feisty. But he got hurt a lot.

His style requires him to play with that edge and against bigger stronger NHL defenders he'll get put flat on his ass or on the LTIR even more often.

Kovalenko is going to be great for the 45 healthy games you get from him. A guy you'll love to cheer for. But by the time he's 28 he'll be too broken to keep playing his game in the NHL.

What does a Blackwood contract project to be next off-season? Gotta think CMac has a rough idea of that and might view Blackwood as more than just a rental.

I fully expect to hear the phrase "Just could not figure it out" at least 12 times in the next 3 broadcasts. With at least 6 of them coming from Rycroft.
