Here's what I'm a little confused about. Why hasn't Chicago traded him yet?

Chicago would be compensated with a 2nd round pick if they lose him for nothing (54th overall rings a bell). What team would offer them more value than that, when they know that in a short time, Hayes will be free to sign with whatever team he wants?

If he walks, they get the 54th pick in the 2015 draft as compensation. They'd have to get a better offer from a team in order to trade him, and I doubt teams are willing to do that when it's basically been assumed all along that he'll test the market.

So no one has offered a higher conditional pick than 54th. That still seems strange to me.

Why would they? He is rumored to be interested in a few teams and I am sure they have been talking already. Also, even conditionally, is he worth more than 54 overall,?

I guess that's another question. Is he allowed to talk to other teams? Teams make those deals for pending UFAs all the time. They're usually not conditional, so go for a lower pick.

Yes he is definitely worth a higher second round pick. Not a first though.

I'm not sure why a team would trade for him anyway. Especially after it has been established he would not be signing with his draft team. The team would risk being out a pick plus not even signing the player. I would rather wait and see if he actually wants to sign.

That's a fair point. I guess I should put it this way. Why not do something like Columbus did with Nikitin earlier this year? Basically a conditional trade.

Yeah, maybe Bettman wouldn't like it, but we could have traded a 7th for the right to talk to him a month ago and agree on a handshake deal with him if possible...

I've never heard of a team trading the right to talk to a player, without having a deal in place with the team holding his rights. I don't think it's allowed and I don't see why Chicago would do it in the first place.

Isn't it against the CBA to have any teams express interest either to the player/agent or publicly, until he is an actual free agent?

Kevin Hayes doesn't have a contract. Guys that are available in free agency are under contract until June 30. Rules could be different in that case, as far as expression of interest publicly. This wasn't that anyway.

Should be, but there were teams lined up to sign Shultz before he hit UFA. I watched BC play, this kid is a heck of an athlete, but I have to say that I have a hard time figuring out how good he is, and how much of a beneficiary he was to Gaudreau's magic.

Big bodied power forward build and a good skater at the least.

It is, but the teams aren't the ones expressing interest. It's just a guy saying he's "heard" that these teams have interest. There's no way to prove someone from the organization actually told him that.

It has happend, Nikitin to EDM is one example.

Kreider Stepan St. Louis
Nash Brassard Zuccarello
Hagelin Miller Hayes
Glass Moore Stempniak

give us the cup.

I remember after seeing Girardi in Hartford, I made a statement to the effect of "Dan Girardi has no business on an NHL ice surface." I also said that about Bryce Lampman at the time, so at least I was half right.

Lampman!
I'd give him the Tysen Dowzak award, except I think he did have one serious injury that derailed his career.

1. It has nothing to do with being on a line with those players. It has everything to do with him having two close friends to work through the transition to pro hockey with.

2. He's passing on signing with one of the top teams in hockey. Seems unusual that a non-playoff team would suddenly become a concern.

3. See my post above regarding being close to home. It's not that important to a lot of people.

NY certainly offers better proximity to his hometown, but he's also looking at trying to beat out a future HOFer, 30 goal scoring winger, and last year's leading scorer for a spot on the NHL roster. The "original six" thing is so overblown. It's PR spin that FA's say when they sign a lucrative contract.

He's not likely to skate on a line with Kreider, so I assume that falls under the premise of the first point you made against Calgary being a likely options.

Why?
The expectation must be Kreider the co-fastest w/MSL and pivot to be determined. I hope Miller.
However, if Hayes just plain has chemistry, and can do the RW thing, that would be awesome. Hagelin is the ubser-flash we then pair with MSL so no one loses a step.

Still pushing for synergy!
3 guys all extra fast, all extra strong, gives such line(s) an inherent edge.
