This is beautiful. Actual practices. Sniff sniff who's peeling onions.

Stayed away from here for a while, even most of training camp and pre-season. Was not really invested in the pre-season games, it's a new system. Grew tired of the Lafreniere talk. After getting hyped up on the Mets and Jets and both falling on their face (for different reasons), I wasn't going to get myself excited for another team before a single game was played. Told myself I need to see it in order to be on board with their current process.

Last night was the first time they have played a team style game in ages. It took all of four minutes to know that something was very different. Panarin was not on the left side of the ice, chilling on the left boards, near the blueline or floating that direction. He was hustling, forechecking, and shooting.

There is something about your most expensive player is not floating around that impacts the team. Trouba is the captain, but Panarin putting in the effort is what the team needs.

The young players looked good. Kakko was solid, a little unspectacular, but he's going to have a strong season. Chytil was good for a guy who missed most of camp. Schneider was the best I've seen him, just solid through and through. Cuylle is going to get comfortable at the NHL level and will be a wrecking ball. And then the aforementioned Lafreniere, he was the best of the bunch. After reading that fans wants him moved out of here, it was very appropriate he got the 1st one of the year.

A system was played last night, which resulted in the one guy that you have no qualms about showing up for a game being an afterthought in win #100 for Shesterkin. Give me more of those games where he can be in a lounge chair.

Fox got an A, but Lindgren should have gotten his already. Just need to make sure he can survive 82 games. Girardi reincarnated, just don't give out the 3rd contract (if you do, make it short).

Hank tweets out "I'm ready for the next chapter in my life" when the next chapter he's referring to is the second period of the game he's working.

If Lafreniere will just commit to playing that simple game and improve his physical presence he will be successful. When he engages physically he is effective
He had a lot of confidence last night. Going to the right spots without the puck, doing real good things with the puck. What would really boost his offensive confidence is letting him set up Zib, Kreids, Bread, and Fox on PP1. And knock in a handful of PP goals too. His numbers would explode and his confidence would go through the roof.

Trocheck shouldn't be anywhere near the PP.

Kakko should be getting PK time. Kid is very good defensively. He should be getting PK time. Want to pair him with Trocheck fine. But he should be gaining that confidence as the two way guy he is.

Laf and Kakko need to be handled differently. Laf is best when he's focused on being an offensive player. Kakko is best when he's focused on being a two way player.

Problem is when we went to the 1-3-1, the RD is the back guy and isn't supposed to step up. But we did see Miller and Lindgren breaking up plays in the NZ.

I get your point but the team isn't going to just be docile and fall into the aforementioned neutral zone forcheck that much. A few times per game yeah when the other team has a Control Breakout here and there, but overall the team is going to try and be more aggressive everywhere and overall.

I'm convinced @GENESISPuck94 doesn't watch the games and then just goes to the box score copy and pastes to excel and sorts the ice time. Then gets angry when the kids aren't on top.
I've watched nearly every Rangers game since 92. I played for over 25 years. I may have not made it to a level that some here have. But I can speak from experience when it comes to shit coaches/organizations not developing players correctly and what it does to a player mentally as a player.

All my complaints about the way the Rangers are run is from experience as a fan and a player and the time and energy I committed to the sport when I was younger.

If you don't want to agree, that's fine. But the Rnagers have been doing the same thing for so long when other teams are doing the opposite and which teams have been successful doing which methodology? The Rangers? There's a handful of teams that do things a specific way and win multiple Cups since the Rangers last won and the Rangers think their stupid method that hasn't worked will magically work. Their method of developing forwards is rotten and doesn't work. Their method of team building is rotten and doesn't work. Their commitment to headlines and celebrities filling seats doesn't work. If they were committed to being a hockey organization they'd be more successful on the ice. That's why places like Vegas win a Cup and go to multiple Finals, and Tampa win multiple Cups, and Pittsburgh wins multiple Cups, and the Devils win multiple Cups, and Chicago wins multiple Cups and now some of them are on the rise AGAIN. While the Rangers continue to try to successfully beat square pegs into round holes.

They were gifted the kinds of players Rangers fans always envy those other teams for. And the Rangers proceeded and continue still like last night to completely have no clue how to properly get the most out of them and build them into team and league leading players. They're committed to quick fixes and turnarounds and that's why they trade for and buy any mercenary they can get their hands on instead.

The minute I see the same old shit from this organization even if it's game 1 of the season, it passes me off because they haven't learned. New coach, new staff, SAME methodology. If they truly changed, and cared about winning a Cup or multiple Cups, Laf and Kakko would have lead the forwards in ice time. Like all the teams that have won multiple Cups do with their versions of those players. You can't waste 1 and 2 overall picks and win Cups.

This game reminded me of the old "we don't have enough skill to not play 6 goalie system" debates. This team looked considerably faster than any game last year. It's almost like if you know where you're supposed to be you can play faster
One of my hockey pet peeves is people complaining about how fast these guys can skate when the issue is and always was - as you say - knowing where to be. When you start the race a second and a half early, you always win.

I thought he played a quiet but solid game.

The D was moving up with purpose. Schneider being on the right has to stay home a little more but we saw it from him as well.

Key stood out to me. He was like a forward for stretches of the game. He was throwing checks behind the net on the forecheck a few times.

His skating, range and length was very noticeable. I could see Housely being the perfect mentor for him too. Similar skillsets.
Agree on both, especially K’Andre. It’s like he decided to go deep on a few shifts. He was clearly tentative but if Laviolette keeps pushing him to do that, it’ll be great for Miller and the team.
As much as I love the win, I’m hoping Laviolette is showing the kids film and saying ‘more of that!’

They are gonna want him to do that. Thats what I love about this system. Key grew up as a forward, he’s got the right instincts

The AHL is a grind too, and he only got better as the season went on. I think he'll be fine.
Good point. I hadn’t thought of it that way.

He always had his feet moving and in great positions quickly, Tapping his stick looking for the puck and being assertive. He moved very well for a big man. Really nice to see and encouraging. His development looks fantastic. Kudus for Ranger coaching & development. They are criticized so often for it, unfortunately rightly too often, want to give them credit when its due.
Imagine if Cuylle develops into a stable human version of tom Wilson. Wow.

Legend has it that Chytil is still somersaulting through the air to sell Dahlin's hip check and get him over in front of the home crowd.

But seriously, Chytil had the presence of mind to brace himself with a handstand (!) before landing. Try that with skates and pads on, Simone Biles.
Wasn’t that on Pitlick?

Trocheck is embracing his third line role and I thought he had a decent game. He won a bunch of faceoffs on special teams which helped determine the outcome of the game.

I really don't see an issue with the deployment last night.

If the game were closer and they were struggling to score, perhaps then I'd be more critical.
Yep. It was fine. When you’re winning the bottom six gets a bit more ice time. Absolutely fine.

He had a good first game. One of the things I'm happy about is that he didn't circle up high in the offensive zone as much as he did in previous years last night. He was right around the crease when setting up Laf.

He was driving towards the net a bit more in general. I'm hopeful that he continues playing like this and doesn't go back to his "slowing the game down" style play later in the year since that doesn't work come playoff time.
Seemed to me the whole team was making a concerted effort to go to the net and stay there. As opposed to the pat-a-cake drive-bys we have gotten accustomed to over the years. I love it and I pray they keep doing it.

Wah wah wah. It's ridiculous to complain after last night's game but you do you. Kakko is on the 1st line and Laf and Chytil are on the 2nd. What more do you want in the first game of the season? Most teams that pick number 1 and number 2 OA are bottom feeders and don't have the talent that the Rangers do, especially on the PP. You are not replacing Kreider, Mika, Panarin, or Fox on the 1PP. Their PP has been top 10 the last few years and you don't make wholesale changes when it's been so productive. Chytil, Laf, and Kakko also got close to 15 minutes per game last year and had plenty of opportunity. The players also need to perform when given ice time. Chytil and Kakko made strides last year and I believe Laf will this year. The 2nd PP unit should see more ice time if last night is any indication.
