Some thoughts, go easy on me …

  • Another pitiful performance by the Jets but #37 was a star. Wow.
  • I’m hoping the Jets can get off this slump but they’re looking more and more like first round fodder. Is it worth it to trade our first or a top prospect just to get bounced in round one? I don’t think so.
  • Put this game on Hellebuyck’s demo reel. Incredible. One of the better performances I can ever remember from a goalie and Helle does this a few times every year.
  • On a similar note, sure am thankful that Shesterkin shit the bed tonight.
  • Lafreniere and Kakko were embarrassing. Shows how laughable the Rangers are when it comes to drafting/developing talent. They fell backasswards into the first overall pick and pissed it away. Love to see it. Don’t know where that team would be if they weren’t in NYC and didn’t have Panarin/Fox/Trouba force their way onto the team, but they wouldn’t be in a good spot.

Flush the awful effort and thank Helle for the two points. Gotta find a way out of this funk, and hopefully getting the W tonight is the start of it.

Spotlight game in the Big Apple and the boys came to play tonight.

Statement game by Hellebuyck, outplaying Shesterkin on a back to back.

Special teams victory. Start off the game with a PP goal, and the next 3 penalties after the fighting majors are on the Jets. Last year's team would have given up that lead, maybe been playing from behind.

I don't think our PK gets nearly enough credit. Those guys are synchronized out there, and it's a team effort. Such a big difference from having 4th liners who didn't contribute nearly enough last year.

End of the first PK even created the response with a goal to carry momentum.

I want to thank the coaching staff for reading my suggestion of putting Connor and Scheifele back together. I think that gave some energy to Connor's game. And not only does he click with Scheifele, but with Dubois and Appleton on the 3rd goal. The Jets need their snipers sniping. If there a guy that doesn't get appreciated enough around these parts its Apples. He's been rock solid since returning to the lineup. He hasn't looked out of place in the top 6 either. +3 in 2 games.

I didn't mind the game from Ehlers-Dubois-Wheeler. Ehlers looked a lot more energized tonight.

Lowry's line had a rough night. It seems to me that Adam Lowry is nursing some kind of injury because his stride is off a little, seems a little slower. Morgan Barron had some edge tonight. I think for him and Pionk this game meant a little more. Pionk's return to top 4 play, and some offensive jump has helped this team play a little more consistent.

I thought Logan Stanley had a rough game. But he was acceptable on the PK. I don't know if he was being showcased tonight, or if it was just a good night to have him in the lineup, to get some action...

It was nice to see Jabob Trouba get danced a few times by KC, and outmuscled by the Scheif. Seems to me like he isn't as good of a skater as he was in Winnipeg.

That was a needed win. Keeps the eye on the prize. I think the New Jersey game was a good tune-up for the Rangers because New Jersey is a skating team, and the Jets were able to skate with a more skilled but less speedy team.

I don't really care about the Corsi, because when you build up a big lead, it's almost a guarantee the push is going to come, the Jets handled the push relatively well, and they deserved the 2 points in spite of what the shot clock may say about the game.

The goalie is part of the team. Yes getting outshot by this much is not a good thing, but after Helle's performance tonight, I realized we have the ability to frustrate the poop out of any team we face in the playoffs. It's happened many many times before.

There is so much variance in the goaltending position that, in SV%, a league average goalie has a 1-in-6 chance of playing at a Vezina level over a 15 game stretch. Now imagine what an actual Vezina-caliber goalie is capable of in a 1-in-6 high-roll in a 16-28 game stretch?

Yeah, that's why score-adjusted is a must, for sure. And for all we sweat and fret and worry about us "merely" being up by 2 on the road against a better NYR team, the bookies still thought we were well over 80% to win that game, and unlike us mere fans, they don't profit by being partisans ;) MOST coaches now understand that you don't turtle when up by two, but you simply err on the side of caution when a goal for only helps you about 1/5th as much as a goal against hurts you.

"Another pitiful performance by the Jets" ... I get a kick of seeing this ****.

Let's do a recap of the game without the shots on goal stat.
How many odd man rushes did the Jets have?
More than the Rangers.
How many giveaways did the Jets have?
Less than the Rangers 9 to 17.
Who had more PPGs?
Jets 1-0.
Who kill more penalties?
Jets 4-0.
and now the most important stat who scored more goals?
Jets 4-1.

Rangers are 22-4-4 since Dec 6th. the best record in the league over than stretch so it looks like it was a pitiful performance by the Rangers not the Jets.:D
If the Rangers defense plays like that in the playoffs they will be bounced in the first round.

Checked in on the Rangers postgame thread. I was expecting a lot more snark on the goalie win. It was mainly Helle played great and anger that their goalie didn’t do the same. The thread has mainly shifted to talking about pizza joints in NY. Not too shabby.

Very realistic. Our goalie highrolled, theirs lowrolled, that's why NYR was about a 2-1 favorite and not a 100-1 favorite, life goes on :)

I mean, I get what you're getting at; you cited a selection of metrics that the Jets excelled at. But when you look at all the metrics we can account for, and the kind of P(win) measures that the multi-billion-dollar gambling juggernaut bases their profits on, it's fair to say that on balance, "if you replayed that game" the Rangers win about 3/4 times in the long run. But the other day we absolutely clown-pounded CBJ except they got lucky and beat us in the opposite way.

The takeaway for me, as a fan, is that we're good enough that we can still underperform (if a listed 2-1 dog can be outplayed 3:1) yet still win, that's a sign that we're good enough that it's possible we can get enough luck on our side to win the hardest tourney in all sports. And make no mistake about it, you need luck. Every cup winner in my lifetime has had a 70-80%-ish chance to NOT win, yet they did.

But the takeaway should be, we're close enough that we can still get it done :)

I get that we got out shot but the Rangers had 3 more PP's than us making up some of that difference. It's not like the Rangers were getting break aways and odd man rushes. I'll take these games over us getting 7 PP's and losing, or totally out playing a team and losing. You have to have goaltending or you aren't winning shit . I can't believe some people would be happier losing 8-7 because then they would say man we can score and man we are good but we need a goalie. Edmonton has the best player in the world but aren't going to win shit because they don't have a goalie.

It always annoys me when the opposing team bitches how the Jets only won because of Hellebuyck.
Like he's not part of the team. Also, the Jets won for a variety of other reasons.

Good goalies don't count for some reason :shakehead

If our centres had 6 goals he'd never never say "if it weren't for our centres, we'd have lost that one"

People forget that hockey is a team game and the goalie is part of the team, or somehow apart from it. And even funnier is that teams that don't have good goaltending would give anything to have a helle to steal them a game.

Around here though, games like this get an asterisk
Even though when we get goalied it's still our fault

Sorry if people think I'm being negative. I'm not - I'm being real here. I gave props to the only Jets players to show up tonight, and the only reason why they won. Jets found their finish, which is great. I don't enjoy watching them get caved in their own zone for 55 minutes, though.
You can look at it negatively or you can look at it this way:

Jets obviously didn't have the jump that the Rags had.

Jets systems kept us in the game and allowed us to win by protecting the triangle and net front, forcing the Rangers to take a high volume of shots from low percentage scoring areas.

I can't remember the last time I saw so many shots below the circles, outside the dots.

Helle's positioning and quietness usually means this shots have almost no chance of going on

Outside of those shots, a large amount of the remainder were on the opposite end of the circles 50+ feet from our net and the Jets either blocked them or gave helle a clear sight line.

Obviously I don't want the Jets spending so much time in their zone but they actually handled it really well. Last year, this game would have been 10-3 Rangers as they'd be exposing our dz play and getting high quality chances.
