I don't think they would really need to change schedules. Its not like Atlanta to Winnipeg. SLC and Phoenix are close enough that teams on a road trip could easily just swap out SLC for Phoenix.

When we say "no one truly knows", I think its more in reference to the fact we don't know if this is a coordinated effort to apply pressure to AZ or if its a back up plan. Now I am seeing stuff that Houston is meeting with the NHL. So is Houston the #1 option for relo and then expansion to SLC and Atlanta since they need to build new arenas? That's the stuff we have to hear from people in the meetings
The buildings are two completely different situations. Coyotes basically have free run at Mullett while Utah has an NBA tenant and other events to be considered.

They're not playing NHL games there.

that has to be dealt with since they have that territory as Delta Center is not site-wise...... same reason why Atlanta eventually transformed State Farm Arena to one tenant only as was Footprint w/ the Suns taking sole control of that arena..

Ryan Smith owns the Delta Center though
doubtful you'd ever see pro hockey in SLC..... remember who built that arena...... and has his name still on the court...... Larry Miller..... otherwise, the arena would have to be renovated and who's to say it's not another Atlanta or Phoenix, which forces a 2nd arena like what transpired in Oklahoma City once the Thunder landed there and took exclusivity rights to that arena locking out any other ownership group from sharing the contract.

Ryan Smith has stated that the arena can host NHL hockey. He owns the arena and owns the Jazz. He's in full control. He's also gonna get a new arena.

The NHL let the Barclays Center host the Isles for a bit. No matter how bad Delta may be for hockey, I doubt it'll be so much worse for an obvious temporary spot so as to preclude it.

when though....... not buying it because it should've already occurred by now.... doesn't check any boxes when it didn't happen for the Olympic bid and there's an NHL Arena in that suburb..... what's the future then for Maverik Center is where I am w/ this....

When is what? When they're getting the arena? That's one of the reasons he's trying to get an NHL team to begin with. The Olympics will be either 2030 or 2034. The Maverik Center will be the minor league building it currently is.

SLC has already hosted the Olympics in 2002.... where was the Delta Center in those discussions..... has nothing to do w/ Ryan Smith

Has there been any news on a new arena? Location, renderings, who's paying, timeline? I wonder how "temporary" the Delta Center might be with the Olympics not there for another decade.

Bettman actually said it would be as easy as changing the location.

The buildings are two completely different situations. Coyotes basically have free run at Mullett while Utah has an NBA tenant and other events to be considered.

That's why it would be smart if they were making the schedule around the assumption of relocation (arena(s) with events that actually have to be planned around) and using that market as the primary. Then if/when Yotes stay, it makes the/a single schedule interchangeable. As opposed to making two schedules or making a schedule with the Yotes primary and then having a mess to deal with if they relocate.

Why Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith is hellbent on bringing an NHL team to Salt Lake City

To quote:

"As he is aggressively pushing for an NHL franchise for Salt Lake City, Smith is keenly aware the Coyotes have a tumultuous situation occurring in Arizona. And if they cannot sort out their arena issues in that market, they could become fodder for immediate relocation. At the general managers meetings in Florida last month, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly indicated it might be too late to relocate the Coyotes franchise for the start of the 2024-25 NHL season.

Smith does not want his pursuit of an NHL team to come off as though he’s poaching the Coyotes from afar.

“People who know me know I’m pretty direct. If that were the intention, I would just come out and say that,” Smith says when asked if it appears he is targeting the Coyotes. “We’re not about trying to mess with anybody else’s world. I know what it’s like to be in a partnership like we are in the NBA. There is a way to go about it.”

Smith maintains an open line of dialogue with NHL officials, but he’s mindful not to step over any lines.

“I don’t want to get involved with how they deliver a team. We’re showing that we’re ready and that’s what we’re putting forward,” says Smith. “We talk to them frequently. They know our interest. They see what’s going on. They see the value, and they’re intrigued.”"

You're connecting two dots that aren't there. They didn't use the Delta Center for Olympic hockey... they used the Delta Center for figure skating (and speed skating) which is a bigger surface and figure skating is NBC's marquee event for all demos.

For fans and media, figure skating needs the "bigger accommodations" because anyone there to see ONE figure skater is going to the venue at the same time to watch it all.

But hockey was in the minor league place because only TWO of the participating countries are playing at that venue at once. The massive USA/Canadian media/fan contingents don't have to go to Kazakhstan vs Sweden.
