Cosby Show and Seinfeld are probably my two favorites. When I was a teen/in college, Friends was appointment television but it’s cheap/easy laughs for the most past. Same with Big Bang (but I still watch re-runs, it’s not NOT funny).

Cheers I was a little young to get everything they referenced, but I remember enjoying it.

Friends is a spin-off of Mad About You and you or the NnnnBC won't convince me otherwise.

And for some honorary mentions,

Mad About You itself was a follow-up act in our TV for the Friday7.30 p.m. slot for Flying Blind (1992-93) with Téa Leoni and Corey Parker and Téa Leoni.

Townies (1996) was a fun short-lived show before Jenna Elfman went to star that other show. I don't know if these other guys ever starred anything.

I wish I had caught more of Off Centre (2001-02) starring some of the guys from American Pie not named Jason Biggs or the three-first-names weirdo Seann William Scott.

Also, this guy laughs at your unmention for the main event.

Lauren Graham (far right) starred in the very popular Gilmore Girls. To this day, my wife & oldest daughter still love & watch reruns.

The Joe Schmo show was awesome but it was "reality" not a sitcom.

I'll admit the Joe Schmo mention was really bait to see if anyone else had even seen it.

Otoh can you call it a reality show when the whole thing was scripted and events/relationships were planned?

She was also in the mighty ducks remake.

Also Molly Ringwald, Bill Burr, and Ron Livingstone
I... was hoping I was more obvious.

I'd like to hear if someone knows another show that starred a would-be ensemble cast without that show having been a big deal at the time.

I understand that is pretty much the definition.

I enjoyed Friends when it was on. I haven't gone back to watch any episodes, but I've heard it doesn't hold up well.

Malcom in the Middle holds up very well, as does Scrubs and Psych

Always Sunny is great, and I'll throw out the Drew Carey Show as a name that hasn't been mentioned yet.

haven't been mentioned, should be considered all-timers once some time passes:
Community
The Good Place

completely forgotten gem that will always have a place in my heart:
Andy Richter Controls the Universe

maybe not "best", but absolutely funniest per episode ever:
Fawlty Towers

The correct answer however is Dinosaurs.

darkest ending to a sitcom ever, for sure

I’m not sure if I should be embarrassed that I got kinda into Gilmore girls when it came on right after smallville or if I should be more embarrassed that I was watching smallville every week on the first place
My wife is currently re-watching Smallville from a video on-demand service. The first time around we downloaded the episodes (and ditto for Supernatural) fresh from a suspicious online service so we could watch them about a day after they were shown in the Americas. Watching them was a fun Friday thing to do together. These things carry no shame.

Actually I thing the Friends reputation today suffers from some modern-day let's-hate-Friends mentality. It's as funny nowadays I think. They shouldn't have done the Joey spin-off though.

Psych is not a sitcom.

Final five minutes of the Blackadder finale episode wants to say hello, just to be in the talks.

I don’t understand why people don’t think Friends holds up compared to any other shows of the same time period.

If it didn’t it wouldn’t be on 5 different channels replaying 24/7 for the last 2 decades.

I'm going to submit my votes for Fraser and Everybody Loves Raymond. I can re-watch any of those episodes and still bust a gut laughing.
