  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.

Man y'all aren't even trying to hide that this place is loaded with 50-60 year olds, huh?

In terms of anything that has actually aired new episodes this century, I'll submit a few

The Office (US)
Parks & Rec
The Good Place
Scrubs
The New Girl
How I Met Your Mother
Community

And one that I think is criminally underrated and it's a goddamn insult that it was canceled

Better Off Ted

The New Girl doesn't have highs as good as some of the others, but it consistently pumped out good episodes throughout its run.

I think it’s just called New Girl.

Community’s 1st 3 seasons are right up there.

Nobody said The Office yet? That’s embarrassing.

In the more recent era Brooklyn 99 was one of my favorites as well as the others you mentioned.

Ooooh yeah that's a good one. Brooklyn 99 is definitely up there with some of those others, definitely one of the best of the past decade

It's difficult to compare things across decades. How much weight should you give to how well something holds up over time as compared to how dominant it was compared to everything else on at the time? (In hockey terms, think evaluating Gordie Howe's place in the pantheon of great NHLers; all time great, but how would he fare if you were able to project him to the modern game?)

E.g., according to Nielson ratings, All In The Family was the most popular show on television for 5 consecutive years. It directly spun off 5 other shows, two of which had spin offs of their own. And it was revolutionary in that it broke ground in its depiction of issues previously considered unsuitable for a US network television comedy, such as racism, antisemitism, infidelity, homosexuality,[3] women's liberation, rape, religion, miscarriages, abortion, breast cancer, the Vietnam War, menopause, and impotence. Through depicting these controversial issues, the series became arguably one of television's most influential comedic programs, as it injected the sitcom format with more dramatic moments and realistic, topical conflicts. [plagarized from Wikipedia] Now, I'm probably going to watch a rerun of Scrubs or Community before I watch a rerun of All In The Family, but in the historical scheme of things I couldn't say these are "better" sitcoms.

None of them.

Dinosaurs is definitely the best show mentioned in this thread.

I don't know why but Rod has reminded me of Earl Sinclair at times.

Never saw that, only vaguely recall it even being a series.

Scrubs holds up great, my favorite sitcom to put on as background while I'm gaming.
Fraiser is also good, though hearing stories of Kelsey Grammar's issues with alcohol give it a poignant touch.
[The Good Place] It does have one of the best twists in sitcom history.

I have yet to see a twist that compares to the final scene in the last M.A.S.H. episode with Colonel Henry Blake. [and how the hell do you get an "r" sound in the word "colonel"??]

haven't been mentioned, should be considered all-timers once some time passes:
Community
The Good Place

completely forgotten gem that will always have a place in my heart:
Andy Richter Controls the Universe

maybe not "best", but absolutely funniest per episode ever:
Fawlty Towers

darkest ending to a sitcom ever, for sure
Don't forget about what turned out to be the last episode of ALF.

In no order, my faves...

All in the Family
MASH
Everybody Loves Raymond
Community
Scrubs (early seasons only)
Simpsons (ditto, although it's been on so long I'll clarify that to first 8 or so seasons)
Father Ted (international division)

EDIT: forgot about The Tick (the live-action Patrick Warburton series, not the recent one)

Also, I'm not sure Psych was technically a sitcom, as it was an hour-long show. Although if argued off that position, I'd add that to my list as well.
