2008 was the year of Ovechkin. Who was the best in 2009?

Previous polls:
1998 (62% 1 Hasek, 2 Jagr, 3 Forsberg)
1999 (48% 1 Jagr, 2 Hasek, 3 Forsberg)
2000 (72% 1 Jagr, 2 Pronger, 3 Bure)
2001 (33% 1 Lemieux, 2 Sakic, 3 Jagr)
2002 (36% 1 Iginla, 2 Lidstrom, 3 Lemieux)
2003 (52% 1 Forsberg, 2 Naslund, 3 Lemieux)
2004 (23% 1 Forsberg, 2 St. Louis, 3 Luongo)
2006 (31% 1 Thornton, 2 Jagr, 3 Crosby)
2007 (73% 1 Crosby, 2 Lidstrom, 3 Lecavalier/Luongo)
2008 (64% 1 Ovechkin, 2 Crosby, 3 Zetterberg)

Probably still Ovechkin. You could make a case Malkin had a better overall season when including playoffs, but Ovechkin was coming off the better season and had the better season after and was also dynamite in the playoffs. I think it’s more likely he’d be the better option to take if you’re replaying the season over again.

Coin toss for Malkin or Ovie.

A quick glance at some stats suggests that no one else is really in the discussion, though Crosby was still keeping it a "big 3".

Geno obviously had a great regular season and an all time playoff run, Ovy takes the cake here tho.

Both were amazing in the playoffs (coincidentally enough they both ended up with 1.5PPG), FWIW at the end of the 2nd round Malkin had 19 points to Ovechkins 21 - both of them ere absolutely dominating regardless of their teams success.

I'm gonna "go against the grain" here and take Malkin. Ovi was better in the regular season but Malkin's art ross was nothing to sneeze at. Obviously, Ovi was amazing in the playoffs too but Malkin had one of the greatest conn smythes of the 2000s. It's a coin toss but I take Malkin by a hair

Yup the best player is clearly the guy with the most votes for an award that isn’t for the best player. Also, award voting can never run counter to our opinions which is why no one ever questions certain Conn Smythe wins…

Who won the award that is for best player?

It's Ovechkin.

I still say for "best player" it's more of a big 3 in 2009, 1A/B/C situation with Ovechkin/Crosby/Malkin, so the gap wasn't that big.

Best season - regular season only, decent gap for Ovechkin #1.

Best overall year - including playoffs - very close with Malkin/Ovechkin. Probably still Ovechkin, but barely.

In the playoffs or regular season?

I agree Ovechkin was the better player, and yes he did win the Lindsay, but the Hart voting argument I’ve seen you make before is incredibly flawed. It’s obvious you want to suggest a large voting lead is indicative of a clear gap between the two that the playoffs can’t bridge, but just like voting gaps in the polls section, they offer no indication of the difference between the two. The Hart is also a narrative based award and best teammate has always played a significant factor beyond just ability. It’s clear Crosby hurts Malkin’s case even if voters feel Malkin was just as good or better.

The majority of people thought their seasons were close enough that the playoffs could push Malkin ahead. While Ovechkin was just as good in the playoffs, and better in their head to head, it was still just two rounds, not four. It’s harder to be great for a longer sample, I’m sure you’d agree. While I voted Ovechkin here, I can see the argument for Malkin. It’s the idea that there’s no argument for him I think is a bit much.

Mike Green had monster of a season, 31 goals and 73 points as a defenseman in only 68 games. 145 goals on ice for, 62 against (+24).

To be fair Ovechkin won the Pearson that year as well.

OV again. Not as big of a slam dunk as 08, but still clear. Landslide hart win, lindsay win, 10 goal rocket win, 1st in PPG, top 10 assists, 240+ hits. Had a great playoffs too, which for some reason only became a topic of discussion in these polls when OV's dominant regular seasons came up.

No it didn't. In 2001 with Sakic it was brought up.
It's relevant in 2008 because Crosby is the 2nd best player with best playoffs. Most other years the best playoff player is nowhere near the best regular season player. In 2009 again, Crosby/Malkin are top 2 playoffs players and top 3 players overall, so it's closer.

Yes it did. No one cared that Lemieux had a below PPG playoff in 2001, while Sakic won the hart, playoff ross and rocket. No one cared Iginla missed the playoffs in 2002 while Lidstrom won the Norris and Smythe. No one cared Forsberg was out in round 1 in 03. No one cared that MSL won the hart/lindsay/ross and cup in 04. No one cared that Thornton's PPG dropped from 1.52 to 0.82 in 06 regular season vs playoffs. What exactly did Crosby do in the 07 playoffs? Nothing but no one cared. Also Crosby was not the 2nd best player in 08, he missed half the season and he didn't have the best playoffs either. Crosby was not a top 3 player in 09, at least according to the media and his peers as he wasn't a hart or lindsay finalist. Lots of people playing revisionist history here for Crosby and Malkin.

It's probably a coin flip between the 2 guys and Crosby was a close 3rd that year.

I also think that this was the best post season in Ovechkin's carrer but Malkin did score 36 points and won the Conn Smythe and art Ross.

Crosby was his usual elite leading the playoffs in goals and 3rd in the art ross race.

Datsyuk also had a really under rated year and while his counting stats in the playoffs weren't great he still was the best play driver for the wings in the playoffs and Zetterberg was godlike in the playoffs as well.

Both Red Wings suffer from the total team approach the Red Wings took in the regualr season and especially the PP.

It's too bad that the poll option couldn't be a vote like 5,4,3,2,1 points for the top 5.
