Best phantom offside call of all time?

It seems like an anticipation call to me, the lineman was anticipating the puck exiting the zone and so he saw what he wanted to see and blew the whistle prematurely. It sucks and is obviously a terrible call at an inopportune time, but frankly, losing games now might be better for you guys long term anyway.

I agree that it probably was an "anticipation call" where the brain sees what it wants to see. That is the only reasonable explanation. McDavid just made a sublime little move with his feet to contain the puck at the last second and was off to the races ... until ...

Can't agree at all with the second part though! No one is remotely thinking about "the long term" after all these years.

Dont open the thread then? :dunno:

Why does everyone think games are meaningless that have one of the top 3 teams in the Pacific trying to get 1st place to get to play a wildcard team instead of another California team? People kept saying that in the Kings/Oilers thread earlier. If the refs didn't derail that game and the Kings only got 1 or 0 points, Anaheim could have been tied for 1st with them right now.

If they want to increase scoring, they have to learn to not call these and let the coaches challenge do its job.

Hm...I watch a few teams religiously (Edmonton, Toronto, Chicago, Boston) and Edmonton is getting ****ed over by reffing far more than any of those teams this year. You could make an hour long compilation of clips from this year alone where the refs have ****ed up brutally to cost the Oilers the game or completely remove any hope of them getting back into it.

Like, did you see the trip on Hall tonight? Or the penalty on Maroon? Or that "offside"?

There is an agenda this year. There has to be. Some sort of fix is in.

Why are you whining? I have been told time, and time again, by a poster that claims to be a ref, that nhl refs are the best officials in the whole world.

The Oil have deserved a better fate the last couple games. Good to see them finally stepping up against their division opponents though.

I honestly hope someone makes a video of all the blown calls in Oilers games this year. I guarantee you could make a highlight video at least an hour long if not longer. However I might get in a fight after watching it from all the rage it will bring back.

I've maintained all year that the reffing isn't biased/corrupt. Just incompetent. But I feel like I've been saying that a lot lately for Oilers games

Still think it's just terribly incompetent, with maybe a slight bias for veteran teams. But nothing more than that

What a terrible call. Probably wouldn't have mattered, with only 7 seconds left. But that sort of thing is just sheer incompetence.

Or the McDavid penalty, which might have been the worse one. You know the call is bad when Sharks fan/Oiler hater Drew Remenda lashes out at the reffing over the call.

well i was actually defending my original comment that wasn't directed at you to begin with. it was to the thread in general. you were the one that decided to jump in and tell me i didn't understand. my point was offsides get missed all the time in hockey games. there was one in teh avs game. i didnt make a thread crying.

Who cares what you would do? It has no relevance.

You don't like the topic? Leave.

It would be nice to see that there are consequences for such obvious botched calls. Perhaps that linesman should miss the first round of the playoff (at least 3-4 games) and the paychecks the come with it.

Haha, at least we got this gif out of it

tMh0oid.gif

Love this kid's fire.

People are saying this game is meaningless, yet there is a "what if the oilers win the lottery again" full of people complaining thread every 2 or 3 days.. Lol

Hahahah, I honestly feel a little better after seeing this gif.

it's not meaningless there are implications for oilers, ducks, sharks, and kings the reffing is garbage...

Bite your tongue, McDavid, bite your tongue. Lest you want to end up on the wrong side of every call like Hall does.

i fully understand. instead of blaming loosing the last 7 seconds of why a team lost, maybe blame the first 59:53

I don't think anyone is blaming the loss on that bad call. I think you are missing the point entirely.

How is your comment any different than an scenario where your favorite team is in the play-offs, overtime, your defenceman clears the puck out of the zone and it deflects off player's skate and over the glass. He is penalized 2 minutes for delay of game, other team scores on the powerplay and wins the game and the series.

Would you then say, "well, they had 60 minutes of regulation play to avoid having to be in overtime in the first place, so there is nothing to complain about"?

This is all from the coaches challenge. No official wants to overrule their own call, so anything marginal (or in this case, the furthest thing from marginal) is blown dead. The NHL complains of lack of scoring, but implement the challenge that takes goals away by 1) very subtle goalie contact/quarter inch offside calls and 2) by blowing plays like odd-man rushes that are close calls dead.

Still, no excuse for the call they made tonight. I hope this happens in the playoffs so people will "care" more about bad officiating. At some point they need to be held accountable.

I was at the game the penalty happened right in front of me mcdavid had a handful of buddies jersey thought it was a good call. The Maroon call though was horid especially with the momentum the oilers had at the time.

I wonder if the possibility of a challenge plays into the linesman's head here especially since it was such a late call. Like he's thinking "crap, I was paying attention and didn't see what happened there. Uh oh, looks like they might score here, better call it offside just in case. I don't want to look foolish if there is a challenge and the goal gets called back. I like pizza."
