I'm not old enough to have watched guys like Keon or Horton but since I was old enough to really understand the game, I have to say Matthews is the most talented. I would have said Gilmour but his heyday was really only 2 years which I think eliminates. If we want to talk about most entertaining and the whole package, sure, I agree with the OP over Wendell but that doesn't make him "best". It's Matthews.

To me it’s Gilmour. He wasn’t here for long but he was the best if not top 2 player in the league while being a Maple Leaf.
Best milkman.

I am not old enough to know any of the superstars from the cup winner Leaf rosters so I will simply state best since I watched hockey. I loved Doug Gilmour, but it is hard to say he was the best of all time when he played such a short time here. I guess Matthews, despite his lack of playoff success is the best I have seen.

Most of us aren’t old enough to have watched the Leafs teams that had success. You’d have to think Frank Mahovolich would be up there though, four cups, perennial all-star

My father was a diehard Leafs fan whose favourite players were Captain Syl Apps until he retied and passed on the "C" to 23 year old Ted "Teeder" Kennedy.
My favourite Leaf player all-time was always Davey Keon and then Darryl Sittler.
My sons favourite player was Dougie Gilmour and Wendel Clark.
My most recent favourite Leafs was Zach Hyman, until he was foolishly let go, so now my favourite current Leaf is Matthew Knies.

Dman Bobby Baun broke his ankle blocking a shot by Gordie Howe during the 1964 Stanley Cup final against the Detroit Red Wings. He was stretchered off the ice, but later returned to play and would end up scoring the OT winner in game #6 that ended up propelling the Leafs to win game 7 and hoist the Stanley Cup.
Now that is a player that played with true heart worthy of all time recognition..

Apps, Kennedy, and Conacher are the objective answers. If you put a million qualifiers on the question and pretend that winning or being a team player in this team game doesn't matter one iota then maybe it's Matthews.

In my time as a Leafs fan? Sundin. No way is this Dougie G. He was only a Leaf for like 6 years, and only 2 of them were exceptional.
Names like Apps are probably the right answer. But I have a hard time judging players that played before the '80s.
But it's all kind of irrelevant since I think it'll be Matthews before too long.

There were lots of Leafs with four Cups in the '60s. Scoring a lot of goals by itself doesn't necessarily make you a great player.
Mahovlich was similar to Nylander in that he looked lazy to the casual eye.
Apps went to WW2, fought then resumed his NHL career and won 2 Stanly Cups
How did that guy sleep with balls so big?
