OT: Bears & NFL Talk 103

Man, the Raiders, who have been in pole position to pick Sanders, and have been openly hinting at taking Sanders, are now the #4 QB needy team in the draft order with 2 games to go after yesterday's win.

I can't really see either them or the Browns go into next season with the hopeless pile of junk on QB and just tell their strong defense to shut up and dribble, but there isn't much in terms of reclamation projects out there, and no other QB than Ward and Sanders is even remotely close to being worth picking in the top 10.

I could see Browns signing Darnold in FA and hoping to bounce back to playoff team they were last year (With Flacco at helm)

If Williams throws for 600 yards (568, really) in these last two games, he'll break the Bears single season passing record. He'd also be 21st in Bears career passing yards.

If he has 77 more passing attempts without an interception, he'll break the NFL record for most concecutive passing attempts without an interception.

There are also only 5 occurrences in NFL history where a QB has gone winless in 5+ games consecutive games without an interception.*

Caleb Williams, games 7-11 in 2024.
Caleb Williams, games 8-12 in 2024.
Caleb Williams, games 9-13 in 2024.
Caleb Williams, games 10-14 in 2024.
Caleb Williams, games 11-15 in 2024.

* I can't find the stat for this one. It might have been 6+ games, but I think it was 5.

I don’t put much into that honestly. He’s racking up yards because they are down multiple scores in the first half and they have no running game.

I really want to see him have success in opening drives and the first half

It's a fair point but at the same time.. lots of Bears quarterbacks have spent a lot of time trailing games.

Also playing 17 games now as league

So doing it in 17 games is not at all comparable to Kramer and Cutler #'s on that list in 16 game league

No doubt though given how game has changed even from a few years ago to be even more pass happy and offensive friendly rules its safe bet unless William career falls off that he will likely break record for passing yds and TD's at some point in season

I had no doubt you wouldn't.

Why not? The stats are nice but are indicative of a lack of balanced offense. Passing yards are getting put up because they are playing from 2 scores behind every single game a can’t establish a running game. I’d rather a higher completion rate and more ppg than yards.

Caleb threw for 330 yesterday because he threw 40 times. He threw 40 because they couldn’t run and were down 20-0 in the blink of an eye. Thats not good football.

But more Pass attempts does mean more reps so that’s good

In other news, based on injuries and my lack of faith in Darnold, the goddamn Packers might be the best team in the NFC

Raiders are not in a position to trade assets. Have lots of holes on the roster. OL needs help beyond Miller and Powers-Johnson. Need WR and RB help. Plus DL unless Wilson delivers, but I doubt it.

They simply can't afford to give up 2 or 3 other high quality draft picks or players. That spell of firsts between Kolton Miller to Bowers yielded 1 good player in Jacobs, but at RB. Ferrell, Abrams, Ruggs, Arnette, Leatherwood, Adams trade, Wilson. Simply don't have a good enough base of talent to give up assets if they truly covet Sanders. If they make a trade, they won't have much to help him. Like Carolina with Young.

That reminds me of the stadium series game at soldier field against the Penguins. As we're walking in, Hawk fans are chanting 'Detroit sucks!'. Penguin fans were like wtf.....

I was at that game! Despite it being really cold, that was a ton of fun.

If I could have made it to Wrigley for this year's game I'd have probably gone, but now I have a little one making that impossible. Maybe when he's old enough to brave the elements we can do that one year.

Another Poles L

The Fields trade is officially a 6th. Bbasically got nothing for him. Pelisero reported that the Bears had better offers from other teams that weren’t conditional but he did ‘right’ by Justin because Pitt was a better situation for him.

He did not make this decision on his own. He consulted with Trace Armstrong first

Fields had no trade value I don’t know why some Bears fans still can’t come to terms with that.

Regardless per Peliisero, there we better deals on the table with other teams that weren’t conditional. For example a guaranteed for a conditional, but he wanted to ‘do right by Justin’

But, likely talking about maybe a guaranteed 5th. Fields also had support in the locker room, so Poles wanted to maintain a positive locker room with Fields guys to know that the team did right by him sending him somewhere he preferred to go. He didn't play as much as he had hoped, but that might have been better than landing in the mess of some of the other teams in the NFL.

Those might be the places he has to go to now to get a better shot at starting.

I still like Justin and hope he finds a place in which he can succeed but since he is not a Bear, I have moved on. I wish other Bears fans would do the same.

Pete Carroll has expressed interest in the Bears job. LOL. If Belichick could not get a call and he had to settle for the UNC job, I doubt Carroll will get any consideration from the Bears.

Why not?

Those situations are not at all comparable

The Seahawks were consistently good and competitive with him as HC and he was out after 9-8 season because of changes in management/ownership structure which saw desire from their end to move on in new direction

BB Pats declined without Brady and with BB calling shots in personell, etc. That is why he was removed and why he couldn't find a new gig (No one wanted to give him control he had in NE)

The only real issue for Carroll is his age that will be problem potentially from landing new gig not his actual coaching abilities or anything else

Funny, I'd guess that Carroll is a hotter commodity in a search for an NFL HC than is Belichick in 2025, at least with a young QB to foster. Belichick was a big part in completely ruining Mac Jones, and there are legitimate questions about who he is as a coach without Brady. Add in his clear desire for roster control, and he was always a nonstarter for me.

The NFL that Belichick oversaw a young QB turn into a HoF QB is also considerably farther away than the one Carroll oversaw a young QB turn into a HoF QB.

At the end of the day though, Carroll is 72 years old and a defensive minded head coach, so I'm not particularly into the idea. Better than Belichick to me, probably on the level of Vrabel, but a bigger risk given his age. If Ben Johnson isn't interested, I'd consider it.

Per Courtney Cronin, the Bears expect to interview Ben Johnson. Per Tom Pelissero, Johnson is intrigued by the Bears position.

Speaking of coaching candidates this flew under radar (I didn't see it until today)

What a fall

Can't believe the media was prepared to go to war for him and some even threw out race card as to why he wasn't hired as NFL HC. The claims that EB made Mahomes, etc were always laughable

Since departing KC he failed miserably in DC as OC (While having issues with several players) and now washed out in NCAA

The guy was never HC material and push for him was over the top and absurd

I say interview anyone worth a damn at least

I want a guy like Johnson of course but hey giving Carroll an interview wouldn't hurt them

I heard somewhere that Bienemy was always leaving UCLA after a year, and he was doing it as a favor. On the other hand, you'd expect a legit OC candidate to do well going back to coaching college for a season, and UCLA was anything but impressive this season.

Bienemy strikes me as a less personable Nagy. He's probably a pretty good offensive mind, but the push for him as a HC candidate, and the general confusion when he never got past the first interview stage, was always a bit weird.

And yeah, interview all serious candidates. If nothing else, Carroll could probably say what he'd expect to be done about the defense if he were hired. He's a source of valuable input, even if you don't want him as the head coach and he doesn't have any interest in a DC role, he'd be more qualified to speak on the roster than all of the current employees in Halas Hall.

:xcheers:

Pete Carroll seems like an awesome dude and someone who would be fun to have a beer with.

Don’t want him as our coach in 2025, though.

I'd take Carroll over alot of the candidates mentioned recently. Vrabel is still my first choice though. Get someone younger even if Carroll acts way younger than his age.
