Just got back into BAGM mode. Thought I'd post some stuff about my Jets franchise I just started. I'm still on NHL 16 btw.

Winnipeg Jets GM Mode

Just a heads up, I'm writing this going into the playoffs after the third season. I'll do my best to mention trades and acquisitions from previous seasons because there were quite a lot of notable ones.

Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff Fired

Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has been fired for unknown reasons. Cheveldayoff had a plan, and had the team going in the right direction, but a young hotshot GM named Ermo20 impressed ownership. They thought he would be able to bring the Jets franchise their first Stanley Cup (as well as first playoff victory in franchise history). "We just thought [new GM Ermo20] would be able to turn Winnipeg into Winnerpeg," said owner Mark Chipman. Ermo's plan would begin with tanking, while also acquiring younger replacements for aging stars.

These additions were huge, as Tarasenko and Huberdeau would go on to finish first and second in scoring, repspectively, in year three (2017-18). The tank did not go very well, as Tarasenko had a career year (winning the Hart I think) and we qualified for the playoffs as the third seed in the division, losing to the Predators 4-3 in the first round.

All I remember from the 2016 draft is that we traded up to draft Tyler Benson (Med Elite) 12th overall and Luke Kirwan (Med Elite) 20th overall. I knew Benson was going to be a stud, as I've seen him reach 99 overall and franchise potential in BAGM before, but Kirwan's elite potential was a pleasant surprise.

The team really broke out in the second season, finishing first place in the Western Conference. Jonathan Huberdeau and Vladimir Tarasenko were emerging as superstars, and our defense, featuring the likes of Morgan Rielly, Tyler Myers, and Jacob Trouba, was one of the best in the league. But the season came to a disappointing end, being knocked out in the first round by the Blues, 4-2, largely because rising goalie Connor Hellebuyck was injured throughout the series. It would take a big free agent acquisition to get the team over the top...

So the Jets signed Tyler Johnson to a seven year deal that paid an AAV of $6.8 million. Johnson would serve as the team's #1 center next season.

Also, from the 2018 draft, we traded up to draft two more Med Elite potential prospects: LW Ostap Safin and RW James Helms.

And here's where I am right now: 2017-18 (the third season). Since this stuff was more recent I'll be able to cover it a little more in depth.

Asplund had very low value and elite potential. Safin had downgraded to a Top 6 F projection (he had been drafted as a Med elite), and had even higher value than Asplund. I figured I'd trade for Asplund, who had higher potential (he's still at an elite rating, I'm hoping he doesn't downgrade anytime soon ) and I could get a third round pick in the process to make the value even.

The Blues were actively shopping Koekkoek, even though he was 85 overall with a med elite potential. I figured I'd swoop in with an older player with a similar rating in Enstrom (I'd traded older guys and prospects/picks for younger players with nearly the same rating before, with Tarasenko, Huberdeau, and Rielly). I had to take Carle back, too, partially as a cap dump but also because the Lightning didn't want to make the trade at first because they'd have to put Carle on waivers, so I figured I'd just take him back to make them accept.

After collecting their first playoff series victory in franchise history, we asked GM Ermo20 a couple questions:

Did you expect this to be the most successful year in franchise history? I mean, you won the first playoff series in franchise history after a thrilling comeback in Game 7, you made first place in the Western Conference, like last year, and even had the top two point scorers in the NHL.
I fully expected it. The addition of Tyler Johnson in free agency really pushed us over the top. However, the best is yet to come, with our loaded prospect pool.

You were down 3-2 heading into Game 6. On the brink of elimination, what adjustments did you think the team made to win games six and seven?
We didn't really do anything. We just knew that we were the better team and had two of the best players in the league currently in Huberdeau and Tarasenko, who came in clutch in those final two games.

After winning Game 1, the Jets lost four games in a row to the Stars, losing 4-1. It was a disappointing end to a promising season, but help is on the way from the AHL, since we have a loaded prospect pool. The best is yet to come with this team.

Here's Jets GM Ermo20 on the surprising trade for the first overall pick:

"We saw a player we really liked at the top of the draft in Joseph Veleno. We believe he has elite potential, and will be just one more piece in the dynasty I believe is in the works up here in Winnipeg."

Unsurprisingly, the Jets went on to select the consensus best player in the draft, Joseph Veleno. They didn't pick again until 115th overall.

We stayed mostly quiet in free agency, only signing two players who do have elite potential (one is a high elite and one is a low elite), though they will likely be in the AHL next season.

Tyler Myers, the team's captain, has been regressing. He's been amazing for us, but down from 88 overall to 85 overall with just one year left on his contract, we wanted to make a smart investment and trade for a younger, similarly valued d-man instead of possibly losing him for nothing next year.

I was wrong about one of those guys I signed... Max Friberg (the low elite one)... he went from 78 overall to 86 overall! Definitely getting an NHL spot.
Also, Eric Comrie has progressed to HIGH FRANCHISE potential... I still have him in the NHL, though he's an 84 overall. Since Connor Hellebuyck is promising and has high elite potential, I'm probably gonna have to trade Hellebuyck to make room for Comrie to be the starter in the near future...

Connor Hellebuyck was hurt for much of the first half of the season, so we went through a bad stretch and were one of the worst in the division, but towards the end of his injury, with Eric Comrie in net, we had a ten game win streak to get back into playoff contention. With Hellebuyck back, the team continued to shine, and around all-star break, the Rangers threw a proposal at us that was hard to decline:

Breaking News: Jets Win Stanley Cup After Dominant Game 7
Just four seasons ago, the Jets were rebuilding. Sort of. It really only took a few bold trades by GM Ermo20 to get the team to where they are today, which is holding up the Stanley Cup, after coming back from a 3-2 deficit to defeat the seemingly unstoppable Penguins, the top team in the NHL who also boasts the top player in the world. However, fans in Winnipeg would argue they have the top player in the world. They'd say that title belongs to Vladimir Tarasenko, the Conn Smythe winner, after his amazing performance in the playoffs.
Mark Scheifele struck early in the first period for the first goal, off a perfect centering pass from Tyler Benson. But Sidney Crosby & Co. struck back quickly with a goal from Crosby. Alex Burmistrov scored the Jets' second goal late in the first period, and Jake McCabe sealed the deal with an empty net goal with thirty seconds remaining.
The Jets don't fit the traditional mold of Stanley Cup winners. Most winners have a #1 C that is among the top five at his position, and a #1 D that is also an elite talent. The Jets certainly have that #1 d-man in Morgan Rielly, a bona fide superstar. However, their best player, Tarasenko, is a winger. Their second-best player, Jonathan Huberdeau, is also a winger. Tyler Johnson has been a very good #1 C for the Jets, but not a top five talent in the league at his position.
Instead, the Jets are built on depth, much of which is youth still signed to rookie contracts (which is why the Jets don't have cap problems even with the talent they have on their roster), and speed. They have a solid 1-2-3 punch at center with Tyler Johnson, Mark Scheifele, and Derick Brassard, who they acquired near the trade deadline this season as a rental, deciding then that this was going to be the year they went all in for a Cup.
The Jets might be a year early. Young wingers Tyler Benson and Lawson Crouse are still rookies, and they have Tarasenko-level potential. The Jets even have a lot more talent in the AHL. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck (who activated brick wall mode during the playoffs) is only 25, and he might not even be the Jets' long-term plan at goalie with Eric Comrie believed to have franchise-level potential. Bottom line is, the Jets just won, closing the Penguins' window even further and opening theirs. And the Winnerpeg Jets aren't going away.

It just pops up and says Franchise Mode Complete and dumps you to the regular menu with everything greyed out. You only have 2 options stats central or exit and guess what exit doesn't even work!!! That was my first thought but, there are 50 files and wasn't sure if people would be interested in downloading all of those. Not to mention the weariness of running a .docx file from some anonymous internet poster. I also never read the rules for this board as I never do for any forum, LOL. I think DropBox allows for people to preview the file from their website if it's a common file type. Going to test that and probably will use DropBox. I decided that “Owner Mode” was crap and re-started my Franchise. A lot of features are now disabled: Budget, Morale, etc. I’m also setting some house rules for myself. I cannot claim players off waivers and will try and avoid trading for star players under 30. I also cannot sign talented discarded prospects in free agency. If you play Franchise/GM mode often then you know exactly what I am referring to. It’s bad asset management by the A.I. and has been around forever. If I don’t sign them then some A.I. team will and that is good enough for me.

I've had 1 time in total where I won the Cup in my first year, then with the same roster had the worst record in the league... Does this change by simulating the games individually, or can I sim half the season if I want to etc. I'm not looking to win the Cup every year, just want a realistic result where I can contend with the right roster, and have to find ways to move players when things are no longer going to work with the cap.

That's pretty funny, never seen that one before. My personal favourite is when you start getting further into the sim seasons in Be A GM and EA can't make a proper schedule anymore so in the last week you play 4 straight games.

When I sim each game individually I seem to get more realistic results. Also make sure you are implementing good team/line strategies. Those definitely make a huge difference during the simulation. That's exactly how you can have an all-star lineup and still miss the playoffs. I do ultimately agree though that when you sim an entire year it feels like the game penalizes you for not playing . Really dumb but it's been like that for years.

I decided that “Owner Mode” was crap and re-started my Franchise. A lot of features are now disabled: Budget, Morale, etc. I’m also setting some house rules for myself. I cannot claim players off waivers and will try and avoid trading for star players under 30. I also cannot sign talented discarded prospects in free agency. If you play Franchise/GM mode often then you know exactly what I am referring to. It’s bad asset management by the A.I. and has been around forever. If I don’t sign them then some A.I. team will and that is good enough for me.

Frustration is how haha, I started a new one with my Bruins today and so far I've melded a bunch of different roles together so it's no line offense or defense has anyone playing together with the same role and started the season 3-0 winning every game, 4-0 F, 3-0 F, 4-3 F/OT

Thank you for the feedback. Overall my roster isn't exactly what I would want, because of filling in those grinders and what not, but it's working so can't complain too much.

Big changes during the summer, Tavares, Hamonic, Dea, ... out.

We were a .500 team almost all year long but a good before the deadline, put us in a good position for a playoff spot in a weak division. Even if I missed the playoffs last year, but the numbers (goals, assists, points were slightly better in general)

OMG, THAT 1ST ROUND. Tom Wilson, the best forward injured at the end of the regular season. He only came back for game 4, while we were already down 3-0 in the series. He put this team on his back, scored 2 goals in G4 and 1 goal, the GWG in G7. Like they did in 1975, the Islanders come back from 3-0 deficit to win the series.

No miracles in round 2. Toronto with Hamonic, will win the Cup few weeks later. (Like it almost happens everytime, team that beats me, wins the cup). They won the CUP in 17 games. The only game they lost was against me.

This will be a good experience for the young guys. A good experience for a team in year 1 of rebuild.

I usually like to play semi-simulated GM modes with lots of trading (including lots of giving up draft picks). Sometimes I have the cap on, sometimes the cap off. This time, for the first one I am sharing with the outside world, I am going to simulate ALL games. No intervening, as much as I may be tempted to. (Though I will sim live through some games.) Salary cap on. I'm not quite decided whether I am going to keep this ultra-realistic, or a mix of realism and video game fun, but the preset is "traditional", and injuries are on.

With that said, I am starting as the Carolina Hurricanes with the April 17, 2017 roster update, with NO CHANGES from it. That means that no real life trades after that date will be incorporated. Of note is that Bryan Bickell is still in the game, as EA did not move him into retired with that update for some reason. ​ As he has a $4M cap charge that is impossible to trade, I am just going to leave him scratched for the final year of his deal rather than try to trade him or send him to the AHL, as the $4M is keeping me above the salary floor.

The length will be 25 seasons, but who knows if I will actually run it that long?

With that said, let's go!

At the Christmas break, the Hurricanes are 15-17-2 and are getting a huge injury bug on the blueline for Christmas.
