ROUND 1...

USA squeaks by Switzerland as the 2015 World Cup of Hockey gets underway.

USA+v+Switzerland+2015+IIHF+Ice+Hockey+World+DeAJpNfV5X1l.jpg

In what should be an easy matchup for the United States, the first game of the tournament features one of the top ranked teams (U.S.) against one of the lowest ranked teams (Switzerland). USA obviously has plenty of NHL players, while the Swiss have Jonas Hiller, Raphael Diaz, Roman Josi, and Nino Niederreiter. USA should have an easy time advancing to round 2.

Goals
Period|Time|Team|Scorer|Assists|Score
1|7:33|USA|R. Kesler (1)|Unassisted|1-0 USA
2|7:11|SWI|D. Hollenstein (1)|R. Josi (1)|1-1 Tie

2|16:38|USA|R. Kesler (2)|P. Kane (1)|2-2 Tie
3|7:18|USA|T. Oshie (1)|M. Pacioretty (1), K. Shattenkirk (1)|3-2 USA
3|19:59|USA|R. Kesler (3)|R. Suter (1)|4-2 USA

USA fans should be worried. This game should have been an easy win. It should have been over before the 2nd period. It shouldn’t have been a 2 goal differential. The fact that Switzerland was actually winning this game at one point is crazy. Switzerland should be proud, and the U.S. better be better next game.

Russia destroys Germany in one-sided affair

Russia+v+Germany+2016+IIHF+World+Championship+dN0BzdhQ-qbl.jpg

Russia has to be careful here, after seeing what almost happened to the U.S., the Russians will want to be extra careful tonight, when they try and pull out the victory against the Germans to move on to round 2.

Goals

3|19:59|RUS|P. Datsyuk (2)|I. Kovalchuk (3), A. Markov (2)|10-0 RUS

Wow!! Not only did Russia win, but they SPANKED the Germans. The Germans played with heart, but they were just no match for the mighty Russians who move on to round 2.

Number one ranked Canada beats up on the French

ice-hockey-2016-iihf.jpg

Canada is listed as the best hockey team in the world right now. Let’s see if they live up to the name in this game. This should be a warmup for the Canadians, but we’ll see if the French can make a game of it.

Goals
Period|Time|Team|Scorer|Assists|Score
1|1:16|CAN|P. Bergeron (1)|C. Kunitz (1)|1-0 CAN

3|5:55|CAN|J. Toews (1)|S. Weber (1), P. Marleau (1)|3-0 CAN
3|10:09|CAN|S. Weber (1)|Unassisted|4-0 CAN

So, the big three (Canada, USA, and Russia) have all moved on as expected. Now it’s time for those secondary (or maybe even a few underdog) teams to play and advance to fill out the rest of round 2.

Finland tops Latvia to advance to round 2.

latvia-v-finland-2013-iihf-20130514-125823-134.jpg

Finland is ranked as the 5th best team in the world, while Latvia is one of the lowest. Players like Barkov, Vatanen, Jokinen, and Rask make up Finland’s lineup, while to only real established NHL player on Latvia is Zemgus Girgensons.

3|19:25|FIN|J. Jokinen (1)|A. Barkov (1)|3-0 FIN

Another favorite advances in this tournament. Now with the first series in each division out of the way, we move on to the second series to determine the round 2 matchups.

Czech Republic defeats Ukraine to advance to round 2.

iihf-championship-czech-republic-vs-russia-28.jpg

The Czechs should be able to pull off a win in this game. Ukraine shouldn’t be much of a problem for them, but we’ll see.

3|19:57|UKR|A. Ponikarovsky (1)|Unassisted|3-1 CZE

The Czechs win this round, but they’ll play the U.S. in round 2 which should be a tough matchup.

Norway mounts incredible comeback, only to lose to Denmark in OT.

This should be the most evenly matched game we’ve seen yet, which should equal out to being a good, exciting game.

By far the most exciting game of the tournament so far. It looked as if Denmark was going to run away with it after the second period, but Norway fought back and tied it up, only to suffer a soul-crushing defeat in overtime off a Nicklas Jensen snapshot.

Slovakia eliminates Austria with 4-2 win.

Henrik Lundqvist and the Swedes shutout Great Britain in an 8-0 landslide victory.

Round 2...

USA shuts out Czech Republic to advance to round 3.

You would think based on the rosters that this would be an easy game for the U.S., but given that they had a tough time with Switzerland in round one, this game may be closer than we think.

Russia defeats Denmark, will face U.S. in round 3.

So now that I'm done with the WCoH, I'll do one last GM mode with a team I've never done, a team with little or no playoff success, a decent team right now/a middle of the pack team.

Only team IO can think of that fits all those is Columbus, so I'll do them. I'll probably start over the weekend, but have the first write-up later today hopefully.

Columbus Blue Jackets
2015-16
Introduction

The Columbus Blue Jackets have announced today that hey have fired General Manager Jarmo Kekaelaeinen as well as their Assistant General Manager, President of Hockey Operations, and Head of Player Development.

Blue Jackets' owner John P. McConnell announced the hiring of two former Blue Jackets for the two GM roles. Adam Foote will take over the role of General Manager, while Geoff Sanderson will become assistant GM. Also, as part of the Jackets front office overhaul, David Vborny was brought in as the President of Hockey Operations and Rostislav Klesla was brought in as the Head of Player Development.

Mr. McConnell also set goals for the new management team. He calls it "the 10 year plan". No goals are set for year 1, as that will be a transition year. In years 2 and 3, the goal is just to make the playoffs. Years 4-6 are to advance at least to round 2. Years 7 and 8 are to make it to the Conference Finals. Year 9 is to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Year 10 is to win the Stanley Cup. These are lofty expectations for sure, he says, but he believes in the team and in management and is confident they can come through.

GM Adam Foote also laid out his own "5 year plan". First is what he calls "cleaning house", which means clearing all the unnecessary contracts in year 1. Then, in year 2, they'll identify a core, and trade off some non-core pieces. Years 3 and 4 will be spent building around that core group and adding pieces to it. Year 5 is when they plan to add the least few missing pieces of the puzzle to win the Stanley Cup.

Their plans don't match in terms of years, but they both have the same goal: to win the Stanley Cup, and to win it relatively soon.

...

As of now, this is the projected opening night lineup for the Blue Jackets if no changes are made:

For your first line center (Depending on what you are willing to give away) Try acquiring Krejci, Duchene, Backes, or Kuznetzov. As for your line 4 Boyd gordon is dirt cheap and has something like 90 faceoffs(i think he is on arizona) for your top 6 d-man replacement Ben Hutton or Orlov and as for the backup goalie get one of Anaheim's 2 extra goalies( Tokarski or Khudobin) just some ideas :) I loved the WCOH btw

Thanks. I will definitely keep some of those names in mind. :)

Thanks again, it was actually pretty fun (I guess because I'm not always playing that mode, so I enjoyed it).

Trade Rumors:
Rumor #1...Shane Doan finally done in Arizona?
~It has been reported that the Arizona Coyotes have placed long time captain Shane Doan on the trade block. It makes sense for the future of the franchise, but loyalty is something that is now likely gone.

Rumor #2...Blue Jackets in the market for top center.
~The Columbus Blue Jackets are reportedly looking for a #1 center, as they believe Dubinsky would be better suited as a #2. Possible targets include David Krejci, Matt Duchene, David Backes, and Kyle Turris.

Rumor #3...Patrik Elias on the block?
~Rumors are flying around that Elias could be traded from New Jersey. At this time, it seems kind of pointless. New Jersey has plenty of cap space, and isn't going to get anything significant in return from an Elias trade, and they'll sour another relationship with another long-time Devil.

Trade Rumors:
Rumor #1...Phase one of Foote's 5 year plan done?
~Quite a few dpth/AHL players were just moved out of Columbus, seemingly finishing phase 1 of GM Adam Foote's "5 year plan" for the team, however player like David Clarkson and Fedor Tyutin are still on the team. Perhaps they could not be traded.

Rumor #2...Dallas looking to move one of their goalies.
~Jim Nill has apparently had second thoughts about having two starting goalies heading into the season, and is now reportedly looking to trade on of them away.

Rumor #3...Hurricanes ready to blow it up?
~Despite being comfortably in a rebuild right now, Carolina has never officially "blown it up". Players like Jordan Staal, Jeff Skinner, and Cam WArd all still remain on the team. But now, the Hurricanes are ready to completely tear it down, as word is going around those three players are on the block and Carolina is actively shopping them.

Does anybody know a good alternative to moving picks pre gm mode? For example i know EA wont make another Roster update for legacy so how could i make the Chicago/Carolina trade. Terrivainen and Bickell for a 2nd and 3rd. I'm thinking of figuring out what team i'll be, then in roster management steal elias linholm from carolina, start up gm mode, trade lindholm for 2nd and 3rd, then trade those for Chicago's 7th or a crappy prospect. There is no guarantee that this will work and i'm wondering if anybody else had other ideas?

:sabres 2015-2016 Buffalo Sabres GM Mode Season

INTRO

First Half in Review

SABRES:
The Sabres came out with a horrible start, going 2-8 in their first 10 games. Not much was expected of this team though. So it isn’t too big of a disappointment. The team steadily got a better but through 64 games in this season and they are still a bottom 5 team. Evander Kane is leading the team with an impressive 25 goals and 49 points. He is getting close to beating his career high of 30 goals and 57 points. This is the giant step that the Sabres were hoping that he would take whenever Tim Murray traded defenseman Tyler Myers for him. In the end, the hope is to get one of the top picks and possibly snag one of the Finns (Puljujarvi/Laine) or a top defenseman (Sergachev/Chychrun). The Sabres are not exactly looking for a center, like Matthews. The team is set at center with franchise center Jack Eichel and shutdown center Ryan O’Reilly. There is no need for another big name center man. So if the Sabres are in position to select him, look for them to possibly trade down a few picks. This is one of the deepest draft classes in years. It is stacked in every position possible except for goaltender.

AROUND THE NHL:
There are currently some new faces at the top of the leaderboard for goals, as well as points. In somewhat of a surprise, Vladimir Tarasenko is leading the league in points, further solidifying his rise to superstardom. He is also 4th in goals, only behind Patty Kane, Max Pacioretty and Tyler Seguin. “It wasn’t believed that he would be this good, this fast†- Keith Jones. Speaking of goals, Alexander Ovechkin is not at the top…. An injury riddled season has led to him missing 13 games. That hasn’t stopped him from being only 9 goals behind leader Tyler Seguin, who currently has 38. As for the standings, to no one's surprise, the Chicago Blackhawks are dominating the NHL and leading in points with 94. The next closest team is San Jose with 86. The shocking thing is, the Ottawa Senators at the top of the Eastern Conference. Meanwhile teams like Washington, New York (Islanders) and Pittsburgh are battling it out for the wild card spots. OH and everyone will love this, the Toronto Maple Leafs are in a playoffs spot. The Leafs currently hold the 6th spot in the Eastern Conference.

Trade Deadline
deadline-520x245.jpg

:sabres Acquire | :bruins Acquire
RW Zach Senyshyn | LW Matt Moulson
D John-Michael Liles | C David Legwand
|2016 STL 3rd Round Pick

Notes: Buffalo Sabres retain .350 million on Matt Moulson’s contract. .350 will be retained on each of the last four years of his contract.
Analysis: The Bruins gain two veterans who can still contribute in the bottom six and a 3rd round pick in the upcoming draft. But they trade away a stellar prospect in doing so. The Sabres get one of the Bruins first round draft choices from last year, also taking on Liles and his albatross contract.

The Pieces:
Zach Senyshyn: The youngest player in this trade, Senyshyn was the main piece coming back for the Sabres. The Sabres have a great group of prospects but the one position that was hurting was the right wing. They just patched that hole up by gaining one of the better right wing prospects out there. He has a chance to become a great second line winger if everything goes according to plan. If that happens, you’ll likely see him playing with Ryan O’Reilly and Evander Kane in the future. As Sam Reinhart has found his spot on the right wing next to future superstar Jack Eichel.
John-Michael Liles: Liles has been spiraling downwards after being a somewhat productive player earlier in his career. He was thrown into the trade to even the salaries out with his contract being a tad under 4 million. He only has one year left on the deal and will be a free agent at the end of the season. He will likely bolster Buffalo’s AHL depth on defense, as he will man the top pairing along with Carlo Colaiacovo.
Matt Moulson: A three time 30 goal scorer, Moulson has been trending down after being traded to Minnesota and eventually coming back to Buffalo. However, he has had a solid year so far, tallying 11 goals on a terrible Sabres team. He was even playing on the third line. Moulson will provide depth scoring for a Bruins team that is desperately pushing for a playoff spot. He will likely play on a third line with Ryan Spooner and Lee Stempniak. Boston is hoping he will keep up his solid year and provide it for the next couple of years. If he doesn’t, his contract could very well become one of the worst in the league.
David Legwand: David Legwand is a rental player and more of a secondary piece in this trade for the Bruins. He will likely be on the Bruins fourth line. He had been a terrific 3rd line center over the duration of his career but has significantly slowed down over the past few years. He is getting into his mid 30’s and him slowing down should be expected. He will be relied on for leadership in the locker room and solid play in his defensive zone.

Second Half In Review

SABRES:
The season stayed the course throughout. The team would lose a couple of games in a row. Bounce back with a win or two and then go right back on a losing streak. Not all is bad though, the future is still looking very nice for the Buffalo Sabres franchise. The Sabres have a couple of top prospects in the world, as well as some other good ones too. Now, we will add another one. In the lottery draft, we have the second best chance of getting the top pick. If we do not win the lottery and possible drop, the furthest we could fall to is pick number 5. So either way, this team will likely be getting an elite, if not franchise prospect.

AROUND THE NHL:
The playoffs will be seeing an unfamiliar team. The Toronto Maple Leafs will be in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They showed all the doubters and made the playoffs. Also, the Penguins battled back from their poor early start to the season to move all the way up to the second spot in the Metro (look familiar:nod:). They were carried by the duo of Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel, who were both top 10 in scoring, as well as Marc-Andre Fleury. Speaking of top scorers, the top eight scorers consisted of players from 4 different teams. By the looks of it, those 4 duos carried their respective teams into a playoff spot. The duos were from Pittsburgh, Chicago, Dallas, and Philadelphia. I believe you can figure out who those players were. Another draw dropping story-line is Martin Jones (I edited his overall to 87). In his first year as a starter, and in San Jose, he lead the NHL in SV% and was second in wins. He was the biggest reason that San Jose was the second best team in the league this year. Although their forwards may have something to say about that. The Sharks ranked 5th in goals for in the 15-16 season.

First Round Analysis
In the Eastern Conference, every series was tightly contested other than the Montreal/Detroit series. The real shocker coming out of the East is the Maple Leafs beating the 1st seed in the Metro, the Washington Capitals. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year in Toronto but the team willed itself to the playoffs and somehow beat the best team in the Metro. The Caps continue to allow fans to use the choking narrative about the Capitals. The Caps have still never gotten past the second round of the playoffs in the Ovechkin era. Also, the Sens continue their great play from the season, while defeating the Flyers. The Senators have easily been the most improved team this year. No one believed that they would be contending for the Stanley Cup this season. We will see if one of the Eastern teams can win the Cup this year. The West (Hawks and Kings) have dominated the past four years, with the last Eastern Conference team to win the Cup being the Bruins in the 2011 season.

In the Western Conference, the big upset was in the San Jose/Minnesota series. The Sharks had been one of the best teams in the regular season. But like the Caps, the Sharks core group of players is considered chokers in the playoffs. The two powerhouses from previous years (Chicago/Los Angeles) have advanced to the second round. The Hawks are attempting to win back to back Cup for the first time since the Red Wings did it in 1997 and 1998. While the Kings are trying to keep the narrative of winning every other year going. The West has dominated the past couple of years and we will have to see if that trend continues.

Second Round Analysis
In the Eastern Conference, there were no upsets. The Penguins continue their dominance that started late in the season. This season has been very reminiscent of the 2009 season. After a poor start, the Penguins fired their coach (Mike Johnston) and hired AHL coach (Mike Sullivan). Then went on historic runs late in the season and carried their good play into the post season. We will have to see if history repeats itself there. As for the Senators, they keep proving the doubters wrong, after beating the Montreal in 6 games. They have been rolling since the beginning of the year and haven't stopped.

In the Western Conference, the Presidents Trophy winning Blackhawks have been ELIMINATED. They were not heavy favorites going into the series but were definitely the favorite. The young Jets team however beat them in 6 games to move onto the Conference Finals. One wonders if the experience factor will eventually hurt this Jets team. It definitely hasn't so far, especially after beating the reigning champs. The Kings keep on marching. This team is build for heavy play and are built for the playoffs. They'll wear the opposition down with big hits and a heavy fore check. Then they have their skill guys like Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli who typically lead them offensively. That's not to say that their other players don't pitch in offensively though.

Round 3 Analysis
In the Eastern Conference... well to put it short, it was a quick one. The Pens dominated the young Senators team and won the series in 4 games. The two headed monster were dominant in the series. As each passing day goes by, this is looking very reminiscent of the 2009 run. There is a chance that it ends in the same fashion, the Pens only have to win 4 more games. The Penguins experience, along with the young guy like Rust and Sheary have made for a great combination. It has rejuvenated Sid after his poor start to the season. He has since showed us again why he is the best player in the world hands down. He was barely cracking the top 35 in scoring at the beginning of the year but managed to end up tied for first with Tyler Seguin.
In the Western Conference, the dominance by Chicago and LA is over... at least for this year. The young Winnipeg Jets team defeated the Kings in 6 games. They have shown no signs of slowing down but will have a tough match up against two of the very best players in the world. This team has been unbelievable. After being tied in the series 2-2 with the Kings, they managed to reel off two straight wins to claim their first Conference title in their franchises history. The fans of Winnipeg have been terrific, the town is so passionate about hockey and it's crazy that they took away hockey from this town for so long.

Pittsburgh Penguins win the Stanley Cup in 6 games

Conn Smythe: Evgeni Malkin

Stanley Cup Finals Analysis
This Penguins team was just too much for the young Winnipeg Jets. Their speed was unreal and it just gave teams fits. Mike Sullivan's system was perfect for this group. Not enough can be said about how he turned this team around. They played an all around game. Blocking shots, throwing hits, not retaliating, etc. Sidney Crosby stepped up big time, not only in his play offensively but in the defensive zone as well. Evgeni Malkin went on a tear in the finals, posting 10 points in 6 games. 6 of those points being goals... Mike Sullivan got this team to buy in to what he was selling and it shows through the outcome.

I had a picture of Geno with the Conn Smythe from 2009 but couldn't use it because I used up the 30 picture limit with all of the team logos:cry:

2016 NHL Entry Draft

2016-NHL-Draft-Official-Logo.png

Gary Bettman: To start off the 2016 NHL draft, the hometown Buffalo Sabres will hold the first selection in the draft.

GM James Morrow: With the first overall selection in the 2016 Draft, out of Finland, the Buffalo Sabres select Jesse Puljujarvi!!!!

(9th Pick comes along)
Gary Bettman: We have a trade to announce.
Fans: BOoooooooooo
Bettman: The Anaheim Ducks have traded the 9th overall pick ….
To the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for center Giorgio Estephan
The Buffalo Sabres are now on the clock…

:sabres Acquire| :ducks Acquire
2016 ANA 1st Round Pick(9th Overall) | Giorgio Estephan

Analysis:The Ducks were looking for a prospect that was further along in his development and Estephan is just that. He should be able to play in the NHL within a year or two. While the 9th overall pick could take up to 3 or 4 years. The Sabres were looking to trade Estephan because they had a plethora of centers in their system and were looking to upgrade at another position. They got their choice of whom they selected this way.

The Pieces:
Giorgio Estephan: The Ducks will be gaining a real solid player in the near future. Estephan could become a low end 1st line center. But that's his ceiling... He is a pretty safe prospect though, his floor is likely a 3rd line center. He is likely to become a solid 2nd line center. And the Ducks have enough depth that they can slowly bring him in. That'll help so that his development doesn't get rushed by being thrown into the NHL when he isn't ready.
9th Overall Pick: The Sabres are pretty thin on the backend, compared to the forward position. They will likely draft a defenseman with this pick. There were a couple that the Sabres were heavily scouting. These defensemen are projected by many to go around picks 15-20 so it may look like a reach. But the Sabres were reportedly scouting Luke Green, Jake Bean and Sean Day. The latter is different than the other two because of his two way style. Bean and Green are likely to be big point producers. Those two are very comparable to Gostisbehere or Yandle. The defensive skills will be fair but their offense will pull them away from the rest. Day will likely be a Brent Seabrook type. A big rugged defenseman with good defensive skills and a big shot…

GM James Morrow: The Buffalo Sabres are proud to select… from the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL, Defenseman Jake Bean!

Sabres beat writer John Vogl reflects on the Sabres draft:

Vogl- "The Sabres had a terrific first day. They snatched up a franchise changing talent and another possibly elite talent by trading for the 9th overall pick. It will be interesting to see who plays next to Eichel, as both Puljujarvi and Reinhart are both right wingers. It is suspected that it'll be Reinhart since the two played together this past season, but you never know. After that, snatching goalie Kelpis will solidify their future for sure if everything pans out. Robin Lehner has not exactly been a stud for the Sabres. That is why they felt the need to grab a goalie in one of the first couple rounds. Beyond the first two rounds, the Sabres had tons of picks, 10 to be exact. GM James Morrow relied heavily on his scouts in the later rounds. And it looks as though they did a good job. The selections were mixed with players that were safe, as well as a couple of high risk prospects. The Sabres management are hoping some of these high risk prospects turn into future steals."

2016 NHL DRAFT

2015-16 NHL Free Agency

Quick Hits (Post-Draft)

1. Three big name prospects have been put on the trade block. Each from different teams. Those respective teams are trying to upgrade certain aspects of their NHL roster by trading away these youngsters. The three prospects are Thomas Chabot of the Ottawa Senators, Nikita Sherbeck of the Montreal Canadiens, and Jason Dickinson of the Dallas Stars. All three of the players were recent first round picks and will definitely garner interest from rebuilding teams.

2. Teams will be looking to shed cap space, as this year's free agency will be interesting. Names like Stamkos, Ladd, and Yandle have not been resigned by their former teams. Those are just to name a few, teams will be able to fill some big holes in their lineup through this year's free agency.

3. It is believed that there will be a huge bidding war for Stamkos which will result in him having one of the largest contracts in the NHL. It will be well worth it… he is one of the premier players in the game today and is just entering his prime. Every team will be interested but Stamkos might want to go to a contender.

Bob McKenzie regarding the Stamkos situation:

I believe that he will go to the best possible team. He wants to win a Stanley Cup desperately. That doesn’t necessarily mean he will take less money but it is still a possibility.

Darren Dreger’s take on this year’s Free Agency:

There are several big names in this free agency. Obviously, Stamkos is the one that everyone is after. But teams will also be in hot pursuit of Boedker, Radulov and E. Staal when looking for goal scoring. There are also heart and soul players that can lead a second line. Players like Kyle Okposo, Andrew Ladd and David Backes will reel in some big money this offseason. Teams like their heavy style of hockey and believe that they have the leadership qualities that will help a club's locker room significantly.

Anders Lee | Justin Bailey
| Nick Deslauriers
| 2017 MIN 2nd Round Pick

Analysis: The Islanders needed to make room for young players on the left wing. In doing so, Andrers Lee went on the trade block. The Sabres jumped on the opportunity to get more depth on their weak left side. The Isles pick up a nice RW prospect who could become a top 6 option in the future. Also, they replace the departed Matt Martin (FA) with Deslauriers on the fourth line. The Isles also manage to get a high pick. The Sabres get the best player now but the Isles shore up their future.

The Pieces:
Anders Lee: Easily the best player in the trade, Lee will slot in on the left wing with Eichel and Reinhart. Playing with those two, gives him the potential to put up some big point totals. He will be the perfect third wheel playing with those two. He is a big forward who has good puck skills and finishes his chances. He isn’t afraid to go into the corner either. He still has room to grow but is currently a solid 2nd line option.
Justin Bailey: A mostly boom or bust prospect, Bailey looks to become a second line scoring winger. The Islanders future on the right side after Strome wasn’t too strong and that’s why Bailey is a perfect fit for this trade. The Isles have to hope he becomes the strong player that many expect him to be.
Nick Deslauriers: A big bodied, nasty fourth line winger. He can fight, hit, chirp… He will take the role of Matt Martin. Both players play a similar way but Deslauriers will be for a million dollars less. He should pick up where Martin left off with Clutterbuck

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2017-2018 SEASON
All things considered, the Senators had a strong 16-17 season that saw them make the playoffs behind two powerhouse teams in the Atlantic Division and almost upset the top 3 in the league Red Wings.

Despite this, fans are disappointed. The Senators have only made the second round of the playoffs once in nearly the last decade. Another first round exit, no matter how good of a team it was against, or how competitive the series was, is something the fanbase is having a hard time accepting.

With players like Karlsson and Turris set to become UFAs within the next two years, and the situation in net being so uncertain, the next few off seasons will go a long way in determining whether the Senators can build a contender around Karlsson and this current core, or whether they'll be forced to sell off pieces and rebuild around the next wave of prospects.

The Senators go into the draft with another high end pick at #10 as a result of the Mike Hoffman trade, along with their own pick at #20.

matt_o_connor_ottawa_101115.jpg

QUESTION MARKS IN NET
The Senators have long been rumoured to covet acquiring an elite goalie who can bring value and stability to their net. As a budget team, the feeling is apparently that the Senators will get the best bang for their buck by spending money on a star in goal rather than relying on half measures in net.

Since 2011, Anderson had been great for the Senators, but after a terrible 16-17 season, the team traded him to Vancouver in an attempt to get out of the final year of his contract. Ryan Miller, the 37 year old goalie who came back in the trade has now retired.

With Miller gone, the Senators are left with a young inexperienced group of goalies. Matt O'Connor is their only goalie with a full season of NHL experience. After a great season that saw him win the starting job, O'Connor's reputation has been tarnished by a post season collapse that saw the Senators pull him in favour of Ryan Miller who got the Senators to a game 7 against Detroit after the Sens were down 2 games to 1.

A rumour leaked earlier in the week that sources within the Senators organization don't see Matt O'Connor as being ready to lead the team in net. A rumour out of Chicago radio stated that the Senators and Blackhawks could be very close to pulling the trigger on a trade that'll see the Senators land Corey Crawford in a deal based around Matt O'Connor and a major asset. Apparently the hold up is that Chicago would like a major asset bundled with Matt O'Connor like last year's 12th overall pick Brett Howden or breakout star Ryan Dzingel who scored 40 points this past season and is signed to a favourable 4 year 1.6M deal.

Ben Bishop is set to hit the open market. He'll cost more money than Crawford, but if he is interested in returning to Ottawa, he could potentially be had for only cap space as he is an unrestricted free agent. If Crawford isn't dealt prior to the re-sign phase, he might be off the table for good as Chicago would be forced to trade/release/buyout other players to clear cap, and thus would no longer need to ditch Crawford. Will the Senators go the safe route and acquire Crawford? Or will they wait until July 1st and put their hat into the Bishop lottery. Bishop won't cost any assets, but he'll likely command as much as 8M per, and there is no guarantee that he is interested in signing with Ottawa.

kyle-turris.jpg

LACKING DOWN THE MIDDLE: WILL TURRIS STAY OR GO?
With the retirement of Joe Thornton, the Senators are extremely weak down the middle. Beyond Kyle Turris, the Senators lack a top 6 calibre centre. JG Pageau and Curtis Lazar played well in short spurts for the team, but both are seen as very good third liners, and not players the Senators would want to rely on in their top six.

Kyle Turris only has a single year left on his contract that pays him a bargain of 3.5M per. After July 1st, with only one year left on his deal, the Senators can approach Turris in order to gauge his level of interest in an extension. If Turris isn't willing to stay in Ottawa, without depth down the middle, and with prospects like Colin White, Brett Howden, and Sam Steel still being years away, the team could be in big trouble.

Could Turris being unwilling to sign an extension force the team to revisit the long rumoured offer by Edmonton to deal Auston Matthews in a trade to Ottawa for a package based around Cody Ceci? Auston Matthews struggled in his rookie year with Edmonton, only putting up 30 points. The Oilers need a big offensive RHD as the final piece to their team, and have long been rumoured to covet Cody Ceci whose value league wide has gone up dramatically over the last year or so.

With Karlsson's hitting UFA status in two seasons, the Senators might be reluctant to deal Ceci until they know whether or not Karlsson intends to stay with the team long term.

zqyIAKq.jpg

ACQUIRING MAXIME COMTOIS: COULD THE SENATORS PULL IT OFF?
Quebecois superstar Maxime Comtois was one of the many players invited to interview with the Senators in preparation for the 2017 NHL draft. Comtois the top ranked skater is expected to go 2nd overall behind goalie Taz Burman, and will almost certainly be gone by the time Ottawa picks at #10.

The Senators are a few years away from moving to a new arena in downtown Ottawa which would be just a stones throw away from the Quebec border. There has apparently been a big push by Senators ownership for GMDP to pull out all the stops and acquire Comtois who is already a household name in Quebec. One unnamed scout claimed that Comtois could be better than Lecavalier, “The best french player since Mario....”.

This wouldn't be the first time a superstar from the Victoriaville Tigers was pegged as a franchise player who could be expected to lead the team both on the ice and at the box office. This entire lead up to Comtois being selected as the top skater in the draft has been compared to the hype that surrounded Alexandre Daigle when the Senators selected him 1st overall in 1993.

Ottawa's only chance at Comtois would be going after Arizona's #1 overall pick. Prior to the draft lottery, the worst kept secret in the NHL was that the last place Panthers would select Comtois with their pick regardless of whether they won the lottery or not. After selecting the generational goalie Ondrej Haloda #1 in 2016, the Panthers weren't going to take goalie Taz Burman at #1 in 2017.

With Arizona winning the lottery, there has been an unprecedented amount of trade chatter surrounding the pick. Some have speculated that Arizona has zero interest in trading down and are only shopping the pick in order to pressure Florida into giving up an asset to move up to #1 and ensure they get Comtois.

Apparently the price for Comtois would be “Lindros-esq”. Word out of Bruce Garrioch from the Ottawa Sun was that the Coyotes are asking for the 10th overall pick+ the 20th overall, Francis Perron, as well as another top Senators prospect like Thomas Chabot, Brett Howden, or Sam Steel. The Coyotes apparently think that goalie Taz Burman has franchise potential, and they aren't going to pass up an opportunity at drafting him first overall unless they get a massive return.

“We're certainly exploring all of our options. If there's someone still on the board that we like ahead of one of our picks, we think we have the assets to pull something off. But at the same time, sometimes the asking prices get out of hand, and you have to just bow out.”-GMDP's cryptic response when asked if he'd trade up in the draft.

Will Comtois be the next big Quebecois superstar, or will he be Alexandre Daigle re-incarnated?

:nhl
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Confirmed Trade [SJ/MTL] Joel Ward to Montreal in exchange for a 2017 2nd Round Pick (46th overall).
Rather than waiting for July 1st, the Canadiens made a move to improve their bottom six. In exchange for the 46th overall pick, the Canadiens have acquire Joel Ward.

Ward had 14 goals and 35 points last season with the Sharks. The Canadiens have a steep drop off on the right side behind Gallagher and Okposo.

"He'll give us some added veteran leadership going forward."
claimed Marc Bergevin.

At 37 years old, Ward has a single year left on a deal that'll see him make 3.275M per season.

retirement.jpg

SIGNIFICANT RETIREMENTS
Ryan Miller and Craig Anderson both retired. Miller was expected, but Anderson's retirement was more shocking. Vancouver traded for him with the intention of him being their starting goalie next season. The shoulder injury which Anderson suffered shortly after the trade is said to be the cause of his retirement.

In other Canucks news, in what is the most perplexing retirement, Daniel Sedin has opted to end his NHL career while his brother Henrik still plans on playing next season. This will mark the first time that one of the Sedins has played on an NHL team without their brother on the roster.

After a huge first round with the Senators, Joe Thornton opted to hang it up. Thornton was only 53 games shy of 1500 games played. The Senators were open to having Joe Thornton join the team for another season, but after a crushing 7 game series loss to Detroit, Thornton wasn't interested.

With over 1000 games played, fan favourite Senators enforcing Chris Neil has called it a career.

Zdeno Chara retired from Boston, and will likely be a shoe in to have his number retired by them.

Other major retirements: Doan, Elias, Zubrus, Legwand, Fisher, B.Stuart, Ference, Markov, Orpik, Ryder, Umberger, Martin, Moore, Seidenberg, Beauchemin, Gaustad, Moen, Tootoo, Hejda, Ruutu, Liles, Semin, Moore.

NHLAwards15-tix_672x412.jpg

NHL AWARD CEREMONY
Patrick Kane continues his run as the NHL's premier offensive player by taking home the Art Ross, Hart Memorial, and Ted Lindsay awards. In what conspiracy theorists see as an attempt to repair Kane's reputation now that he's the league's most visible player, the NHL awards him the Lady Byng trophy.

Ovechkin wins another Rocket Richard trophy. He barely edged out Kane who could have swept the offensive awards had he scored only one more goal during the season.

John Gibson walked away with the Vezina, while James Reimer of all people was a finalist for the trophy. In other goalie news, Marc-Andre Fleury was named teh Conn Smythe winner during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Sam Bennett won the Calder trophy, Sam Reinhart was his closest competition. Matt O'Connor might have won the award if EA considered him a rookie, which for some reason, they don't.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson finally got his due as a premier defender in the NHL. He took home the Norris trophy, barely edging out Erik Karlsson. Karlsson was the favourite to take home the trophy for the majority of the season, but a late season surge by Ekman-Larsson put him ahead of his fellow countryman.

“You know, you'd think they'd just like....GIVE IT TO ME....you know because I'm pretty good, never won it before.....like a life time achievement thing. I am very disappointed.”-Drew Doughty on not taking home the Norris.

Hello all! Been reading these for quite a while, shame I never saw someone try to tackle the flyers lol. I have a quick question though how does everyone pick prospects during the draft. When I have a top 5 pick it's pretty hard to mess up but when i'm in the later rounds what do you look for?

JAMES DUTHIE
Welcome to the 2017 NHL draft. There's been lots of chatter about trades, teams moving up, teams moving down, but as of now, it doesn't look like there'll be any moves. Bob, we know Arizona won the lottery earlier, what do you think this means for the rest of the draft?

BOB MCKENZIE
Well James, Arizona winning is one of the least game changing things that could have happened. The feeling is that both Florida and Arizona who were ranked 1 and 2 respectively before the lottery already had their picks pencilled in if they remained in those two spots. Florida if drafting number 1 would have taken the electrifying winger Maxime Comtois, while Arizona after winning the lottery will most likely select the best goalie in the draft, Taz Burman.

JAMES DUTHIE
Can you tell me, who of the two is ranked higher?

BOB MCKENZIE
There's no real consensus. Ask one team's scouts and they'll say Comtois, while another would take Burman. They are so close that this is a situation where whoever would be on the board at #1 would go for whichever prospect fits their needs the best. Because Florida took Ondrej Haloda first overall last season, and he is expected to go on to be a franchise goalie for them, it puts them in a situation where Comtois is their top pick in the draft. Comtois is certainly the more exciting prospect out of him and Burman. Already a household name in Quebec, Comtois is seen as maybe the next Martin St.Louis. He could be an Art Ross calibre playmaker who can help reinvent Florida's offense.

:coyotes
The Coyotes brass make their way up to the podium and as expected, they make goalie Taz Burman the first overall pick of the 2017 draft.

JAMES DUTHIE
Pierre, can you tell us a bit about this pick?

PIERRE MCGUIRE
Well, it takes a lot of guts to pass on a player like Maxime Comtois with the first pick. But if a you're going to pass on him, Taz Burman is just the right guy to do it for. Although Burman doesn't have the potential of Haloda who went 1st last year, he is pencilled in as a can't miss cornerstone goalie. He is someone the Coyotes could build around. This is their Marc-Andre Fleury pick. Sure, they pass on some enticing skaters to get him, but if they are going to build a top team, Burman can solidify them in net for the next decade.

Nikita-Scherbak-Funny-Interview-With-James-Duthie.jpg

JAMES DUTHIE
We're joined here at the TSN desk with Coyotes GM John Chayka and this year's first overall pick Taz Burman. First off, John, how does Burman fit in long term with the Coyotes?

JOHN CHAYKA
Both myself and our scouts think Burman is a huge piece of the puzzle going forward, and we're fortunate enough to have won the lottery in a year when there is a can't miss goalie like Burman on the board. To say the least, we're thrilled.

JAMES DUTHIE
Taz, did you expect to go first in the draft? How important was it to you to get taken number one?

TAZ BURMAN
I had no expectations coming in here. It is a huge compliment to be taken first, and I don't want to let Arizona down, but whether it would be first overall or in the last round, I am happy to go to a team like Arizona where I can fit in and grow as a player. There were some very good players they could have taken first and I just want to do everything I can not to let them down for taking me.

JAMES DUTHIE
Thanks and good luck kid. We'll head back to the podium where Florida is approaching the stage in order to make the second overall pick.

Dale Tallon and Tom Rowe approach the podium. They have a jersey in hand. Second overall, the Florida Panthers select Maxime Comtois. Comtois hugs his parents and makes his way up to the stage. Clearly, Florida knew who they were going to take because they have a “COMTOIS #44” jersey prepared instead of the usual draft year jersey with a velcro name plate.

BOB MCKENZIE
We heard last minute rumours that the Carolina Hurricanes made a huge pitch for Comtois. There have been prevalent rumours that the Hurricanes new ownership group is in talks to move the team to Quebec, and that they saw Comtois as the perfect piece to market their new young team around. Even know names like 2015 fifth overall pick Noah Hannifan were on the table, Florida decided to hold on to this pick, which says a lot about Comtois' potential. Word out of Florida was that it was apparently going to take a “Lindros like” return to pry the 2nd overall pick and thus Maxime Comtois from them.

JAMES DUTHIE
Pierre, how does Comtois project as a player?

PIERRE MCGUIRE
Comtois projects to be a top playmaker in the league. Think peak Marty St.Louis. The kind of player who can turn a 20 goal scorer on his line into a Rocket Richard candidate. Don't expect the lowly Panthers to rush him to the NHL. They know that the right move is to let Comtois dominate in junior for a few more seasons while they continue to assemble their franchise.

HC0w8cc.jpg

JAMES DUTHIE
I'm here with Tom Rowe and the second overall pick Maxime Comtois. Tom, how does having a playmaker of Maxime's calibre effect your team's plans going forward?

TOM ROWE
We've got some great players in our organization, but Maxime brings something new to the table that we haven't quite found else where. A playmaker of Maxime's calibre just makes everybody around him better, and we're looking forward to years of him playing on the Panthers.

JAMES DUTHIE
The was a lot of talk about teams trying to trade up to get either this pick or Arizona's first overall so they could take Maxime. Were you guys close to pulling the trigger on a deal?

TOM ROWE
I don't really like to go too far into those types of rumors, but I will say that there were some very substantial offers. At the end of the day, we knew that the best move for our team was holding on to this pick and selecting Maxime. First overall, second overall, regardless, he was our guy all along.

JAMES DUTHIE
Maxime, how does it feel to get taken second overall in the draft?

MAXIME COMTOIS
You know, I told myself I'd come up here and just say the right things but honesty is always the best policy, right? I felt sick to my stomach seeing someone else go number one. Don't get me wrong, the Panthers are a great organization, and I am very happy to be here, but how Arizona could be stupid enough to pass on me, I'll never know. I am going to be the best player of all time and Taz Burman might be a good goalie but he'll end up as the answer to a trivia question, who did Arizona take when they could have had Comtois. In this draft, everyone will remember number two.

A slightly stunned Duthie contemplates how to react to the surprisingly honest words of Comtois. As Tom Rowe looks on in slight horror.

JAMES DUTHIE
Well.....that's certainly an honest response. Let's go back to the podium where the Maple Leafs will make the third selection.

:leafs

Third overall, Toronto select Alexandre Lagace

BOB MCKENZIE
There were rumours that the Leafs might have gone off the board and taken Timothy Liljegren here with the idea that Liljegren would provide them with the cornerstone right handed defender to play alongside Morgan Rielly. But they ultimately stuck with the BPA.

JAMES DUTHIE
Pierre, can you tell us how Lagace compares to the other goalies available in this draft?

PIERRE MCGUIRE
Taz Burman is considered to be a step above every other goalie in this draft, but after Burman there are two goalies in the top 5 who scouts see as neck and neck. That would be Lagace and the German born Kucis. The difference between the two is seen as a toss up, but the Leafs obviously liked better what they saw in Lagace as they opted to select him.

:devils
Fourth overall, New Jersey select goalie Bastian Kucis

BOB MCKENZIE
Kucis cemented his spot in the top 5 earlier this year when he started for Germany in the World Championship and helped carry a subpar German squad to a Bronze medal.

PIERRE MCGUIRE
Considering they already have Schneider signed long term in their organization, this is an interesting pick for the Devils who could have gone for Liljegren or Patrick.

:bruins
Fifth overall, Boston select RD Timothy Liljegren

JAMES DUTHIE
Pierre, how does this pick shape up at this point in the draft?

PIERRE MCGUIRE
Great pick for Boston at 5. They go a bit off the board, but they get the best defender in the draft. Liljegren isn't a Chara replacement in size or style, but he should be a franchise cornerstone for the Bruins who along with the 6'5” Brandon Carlo are on their way to building a formidable defensive core.

BOB MCKENZIE
The Bruins could have gone with the BPA and selected a goalie like Logan Floodell here, but remember, Boston has Tukka Rask and a much younger Jordan Subban who might be ready to take over in a year or two. They are set in net for the next decade, and Liljegren fills a huge need for them.
_____________________________

PICKS OUTSIDE OF THE TOP 5

6th overall, CBJ select G Logan Floodell
Gives CBJ a franchise goalie who in a few years should be able to take over from Bobrovsky who is reaching his 30s.

7th overall, NYI select G Ian Scott
Seen as one of the safer goalies of the top 10 with less upside than Dylan Fergusen who the Islanders passed on to take Scott. With no major goalie prospects, this is a good pick for NYI.

8th overall, VAN select C Nolan Patrick
Huge pick for Vancouver. They didn't need a goalie as they selected Robert Stacy 4th overall last season. Patrick has franchise C written all over him, and with Henrik Sedin approaching retirement, Patrick will slot in as his successor.

9th overall, SJ select LD Jocktan Chainey
The biggest surprise of the draft so far. Chainey was ranked somewhere in the early teens, and with top 10 talent on the board, the Sharks must have seen something special in him to take him at 9.

:sens
The Senators staff lead by GMDP make their way up to the podium.

Completely butchering the French language, GMDP follows Senators tradition and makes the pick in both French and English.

10th overall, the Senators are proud to select from the Kamloop Blazers, Dylan Ferguson.

JAMES DUTHIE
The last of the big goalies off the board. Bob, how does Ferguson fit into the Senators long term plans?

BOB MCKENZIE
This is a team who doesn't have much in the way of young blue chip goalie prospects. Scouts this year felt there were a few big drop offs in net. One after Legace, and another after Ferguson. The Senators did well to get themselves one of the top ranked goalies.

PIERRE MCGUIRE
Ferguson is far from a sure thing. He's got a high ceiling, but goalies at this age are hard to predict. By NHL standards, Ferguson is a smaller goalie who relies more on his athleticism than size.

PICKS OUTSIDE THE TOP 10
11th overall, NYR select C Michael Rasmussen
A solid “B+” is how some scouts have described Rasmussen. A big power forward who should be an institution in the Rangers middle 6, but there are some who feel he doesn't have the skill to become a 1st line centre in the NHL.

12th overall, BUF select RD Cal Foote
Similar to Bogosian in his draft year, Foote is a big mean RD who is seen as a physical specimen. His offensive upside have lead some to believe that he could carve out a Weber like career if he hits his peak, but odds are, he'll peak as a scary top 4 defender for the Sabres.

13th overall, EDM select LD Juuso Valimaki
A smooth skating offense first defender who isn't lacking in size and strength. Could feed McDavid pucks on the powerplay for the next decade.

14th overall, Colorado select C Dylan Dube
Dube is looked at as a great value pick at 14. One of the safer players in the draft, he could carve out a career as a strong middle 6 matchup centre with some offensive upside. Dube could be the Jordan Staal to Duchene and MacKinnon.

15th overall, Carolina select G Arttu Kulmala
Despite having a strong pool of young goalies, CAR go for the BPA by selecting Kulmala. Kulmala will likely stay overseas for another year or two, but is seen as a goalie who could compete for an NHL job almost right away if need be.

16th overall, Montreal select LW Matthew Strome
Montreal get a big power forward with loads of skill and a great bloodline.

17th overall, Calgary select C Tanner Kaspick
Kaspick might be the Matthew Barzal of his draft year. At times, he flirted with a top 10 ranking and was talked about alongside Patrick and Rasmussen. Something scared off a few teams as he fell to 17 where he might be a bargain for Calgary.

18th overall, Chicago select G Michael Dipietro
Absolute home run of a pick for the home town Blackhawks. Dipietro is seen as a shoe in to become a starter in the NHL, and with Crawford only having three seasons left on his contract that'll end when he is 35, Dipietro gives the Blackhawks a viable successor in net. If Dipietro pans out as their next star goalie, taking him at home in Chicago will be remembered as a special moment for the franchise.

19th overall, Ottawa select LW Jacob Lapierre
The Senators select the big 6'4” 230lbs 18 year old out of the QMJHL.

“We're thrilled to get Jacob at 19, players of his size and skill don't come along everyday. We don't have anybody in our organization with his size and grit who also has potential to be a 30, maybe a 40 goal scorer in the NHL. A few years down the line, I think people are going to be wondering how we managed to get Jacob Lapierre at 19.”-GMDP on the pick

20th overall, Minnesota select LW Nikita Popugaev
A big right handed power forward who''ll likely come over to the CHL in the import draft.

21st overall, ANA select RD Pascal Corbeil
An exciting defender with a great hockey IQ. Could be a PPQB in the NHL but has potential to be much more. Slightly undersized.

22nd overall, DAL select C Lias Andersson
A big Swedish centre who could be the Stars go to guy on their second line behind Seguin in a few years.

23rd overall, PHI select RW Rykr Cole
His parents reportedly named him something that isn't a real name in an attempt to build up his ability to take punishment at a young age. As a result, Rykr has built up a tough exterior and could become a solid middle 6 winger for the Flyers.

24th overall, WPG select Egor Babenko
An undersized sniper with an elite shot. Babenko is talked about as a guy who might be a 40 goal scorer, but his lack of character and unwillingness to do anything other than play in the offensive zone lead to him falling to the later part of the first round. With a strong prospect pool, WPG could take a chance on him. Will he be the next Tarasenko or the next Filatov?

25th overall, WSH select LDFD William Lochead
Seen as a meat and potatoes type of defender. Lochead should pan out as a strong bottom pairing guy.

26th overall, TB select RW Dominik Volejnicek
Taken out of the Swiss league, Volejnicek is seen as a guy who'll carve out a good career as a third liner, and is ready out of the draft to play in the NHL, but doesn't have any real upside to become anything more than a great third line scorer. Great pickup for a cap strapped contender like TB who'll need cheap young players to fill their bottom 6 sooner rather than later.

27th overall, St.Louis select G Blade Mann-Dixon
Nicknamed Snipes by his parents who were huge fans of the 90s movie franchise Blade, Mann-Dixon is an undersized goalie. A baffling pick at 27, especially considering the Blues have a solid prospect pool of goalies and most observers see Blade peaking as a backup.

28th overall, Detroit select C Jaret Anderson-Dolan
Seen as a potential middle 6 playmaker, there were higher end prospects on the board, but Detroit were apparently fans of Dolan's character and work ethic and think he might be more likely to reach his potential than others on the board.

29th overall, Calgary select G Jordan Hollett
The Flames go BPA despite already having a deep prospect pool of goalies. A few years away, with the right level of care, Hollett might pan out as a starter in the NHL.

30th overall, Pittsburgh select LW Rick Turner
The Stanley Cup champion Penguins take a similar strategy to the Lightning. They select a strong gritty player who should be able to help their bottom 6 very soon, but doesn't have the potential to be a star. The Penguins were said to be sold on Turner as a result of his fantastic skating.

:sens
OTHER SENS PICKS
4.4-Deakin-Poot
(At 6'6”, Deakin-Poot is a huge centre. He's a project who is a few years away.)

4.7-Russell Stamkos
(A smooth skating LOFD out of Switzerland who'll likely report to Binghamton right away. Seen as a powerplay specialist with 40 point upside. Fell to the fourth round as a result of his soft style of player. Good value pick.)

5.19-Reilly Pickard
(He's a goalie......a long shot to make it as a starter, but hey....who knows. Maybe he'll boom.)

6.19-Kailer Yamamoto
(An undersized centre with loads of offensive skill. The Sens apparently have coveted his older brother who currently is part of the Penguins organization. He's the type of player who doesn't have the attributes to play a bottom 6 role, so it is top 6 or bust for him.)

7.19-Kale Clague
(Named after his parents favourite vegetable, Kale is seen as a good value pick for the 7th round. With his great skating and blistering shot, he just might make it as a bottom pairing guy in the NHL.)

Hello all! Been reading these for quite a while, shame I never saw someone try to tackle the flyers lol. I have a quick question though how does everyone pick prospects during the draft. When I have a top 5 pick it's pretty hard to mess up but when i'm in the later rounds what do you look for?

I normally assign my scout in the Canadian leagues because that's where the main number of actual valuable prospects play. I check my contracts before the draft and find out exactly what my team needs! I then normally look for the top rated prospects for my needs, but sometimes i wont lie if there's someone with a great name, then i will surely take him haha

Yea I haven't gotten that far to get CPU generated names, i'm in year 2 of my flyers gm and I like to play most of my games. I had a decent 1st draft my best prospect was Max Jones at no.2 High Elite, with 3 picks in the top ten I should of walked away with 2 elites and a high top 6. (I drafted all FW pretty much since I bumped my prospects who I think deserved it. Phillipe Myers and Morin I made a low top 6 while I bumped Sanheim to be a high elite with Provorov.

Reading some of these GM i'm seeing people get med-low top players in the 5-7th round is it just luck or are you guys looking for certain stats to be high like awareness?

For me, it's partly luck, but once I get to about the 4th round I start sorting by potential, then looking through projected round/player type/attributes to find someone who fits my needs.

Trade Rumors: Rumor #1...Jaromir Jagr done in Florida?
Jagr may be on the move yet again. Since returning to the NHL a few seasons ago, Jagr has played for the Flyers, Stars, Bruins, Devils, and Panthers, and now may be headed to a new team, as even though he is among the league leaders in goals, Florida wants to deal him while they can still get a good return. Keep in mind that he's 43 years old, and is a UFA after the season.

Rumor #2...Panthers, Blue Jackets trade brewing?
Many Panthers and Blue Jackets reporters, as well as top names like Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger have reported hearing “significant trade talks†between the two teams. Columbus is reportedly interested in Jagr, and Florida wants one or both of Columbus' young, NHL ready centers, Michael Chaput and William Karlsson.

Rumor #3...Iginla on the move again?
Jarome Iginla is 38 years old. He has never won a Stanley Cup, and may go down in hockey history as one of the best to never win a cup. He’s moved around quite a bit since leaving Calgary. In the last 3 years, he’s played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, and Colorado Avalanche, and now he may be on the move again.

BREAKING NEWS:
Blue Jackets owner comes out with huge announcement
Columbus Blue Jackets owner announces he will sell the team at the end of the 2015-16 season, and wants to win a cup before he leaves. He has given the green light to GM Adam Foote to trade "any and all" picks and prospects to put together a one year juggernaut that will basically be guaranteed a cup this season, but will then most likely be a basement team in the next few years. This is huge news for Blue Jackets fans, who've been waiting for a playoff series win, never mind the excitement a Stanley Cup championship would bring to the team.
