Thinking back on the first two games there is a lot of reason for optimism!

Goaltending - top notch, legit pro level unlike last year. Undoubtedly as the year goes on there will be off nights, but Dell and Mecha-Niemi are a massive upgrade over what we had. Watching Dell as a NHL backup with experience start that first game, you can see the talent level shine at the AHL level. He was very much in control of that game and faced a ton of shots. Looked very strong in the shootout as well. Game should not have gotten to OT as the Cuda were solid and in total control for like 50+ minutes of regulation. I’m sure they learned not to take their foot off the gas and to stay within the system as evidenced by game two. MechaNiemi looked very quick, and easily moved around the crease. Watching him I just think fast but smooth and no panic. One game sample size but he impressed. Smart GM’ing to ice solid goaltending to give the kids on this club a good foundation of winning - hence Dell being there and MechaNiemi having a good run last year pre-injury. Curious to see Mann as well when he gets his chance. If Mann doesn’t disappoint, I’d expect we see Reimer traded for a 2nd at the TDL and Dell moves up to backup the big club. My strong guess would be the goaltending situation on the Cuda was well thought out to build culture and give these guys the best chance for success and to win every night.

Forwards - tons of skills in here. Mentioned this is in a different post but roughly speaking our 4th line this year would have been last years 2nd line. Speed, quickness, effort on the backcheck, excellent puck handling and movement - crisp tape to tape passing. The sweet spot to me is going to be playing in the system comfortably and unleashing the skill. Game two was a good example of playing hard, getting a lead, then playing solid hockey to lock it down. Eklund has been great in both games as a two way forward. I think Bords had an excellent game one and an “ok” game two but was somewhat invisible. Maybe a system thing though as I didn’t see any glaring mistakes from him. Reedy, Weatherby, Viel, Raska, and Agozzino all have played well and played their role really well.

Defense - I tend to watch the D a bit more closely as I really like the transition aspect of hockey in terms of getting out of your own end. The D has looked great! Merks and Kniazev both flash NHL talent in terms of speed, handles, shot selection, and decision making. Both shut down a number of attacks and made the right read playing D. Defensive stick work and an active stick seems to have improved on both. Merks looked more engaged in playing D so maybe he has gotten the memo on what he needs to stay with the big club. Onyebuchi was a pleasant surprise. I have a soft spot for classic Dmen hence my fanboy-ness about Cicek. Onyebuchi looked really solid on D, had some good passing, his skating looks much improved, and he has a grittiness / won’t back down aspect that I really admire. I feel like he went from 2nd pairing ECHL to AHL 2nd pairing since last year. Yeah - only two games in, so we need to continue to monitor him. Pouliot has been my only disappointment in that he seems to over handle the puck - think someone trying to handle like Merks without that level of puck skill. He certainly isn’t bad, I just felt like a more simple clean game and he’d be even better.

The one thing I'm really encouraged by early on in the season is the PK. That was one of our biggest weaknesses (and we had a long list of them) last season, they were the worst in the league in that department. This weekend, 10 kills out of 10.

Personnel additions have been a big help there, Johnson and Suess seem to be our top unit.

One thing that I didn't notice until now is that Cicek and Holway both didn't travel with the team to Iowa, according to Nollenberger. Not sure if there's something up with either of them health-wise.

Curious if other Sharks season ticket holders, pack holders, or even single game buyers are considering switching over to Cuda games.

SAP charging $30 for a double vodka cranberry, $15 for a beer, any substantial meal is over $20, and tickets are just as expensive as they were when the Sharks went to the Stanley Cup in 2016.

Cuda games are looking more and more attractive with $1 hot dog Fireball Fridays, $3 beer Saturdays, $6 hot dog/popcorn/water Sundays, and cheap seats with a great view for $13 a piece.

Add in watching the young futures compete on what should be a good team, and I am struggling to rationalize why I should stick with Sharks season tickets over the next few years.

Anyone else having a similar crisis of faith?

Probably a good time to mention that if you're looking to go to a Cuda game, there are a ton next week. 5 games in 8 days coming up.

vs. Henderson (10/22 and 10/23 Sat and Sun), Ontario (10/26 Wed) and Tucson (10/28 and 10/29 Fri and Sat)

Everyone get in here.

I’m not a season ticket holder but I attend both Cuda and Sharks games. Cuda games are cheap, there’s not many people there so you can get great seats, and they have a better goal celebration.

Center ice Cuda season ticket holder from the start here. We thought we were going to miss SAP, and believe it or not, we like the empty arena since the corridors at Sharks games are like rush hour on a NY subway and lines are huge, but we have to say, TechCU is the bomb. Large facility for the minors, bars in the right places and plenty of concessions (that was a problem at Cuda games at SAP.) Who can complain about dollar hot dog and beer promos and half price craft beer on the Power Pour? Great bargain overall. The problem last year was the quality of the play, with the Cuda being even harder to watch than the Sharks. I think we saw maybe 5 wins last year (and that might be a stretch.)

With a completely new arena, a new coaching squad (Sommers quiet quit like 5 years ago,) and a lot of new talent, it's going to be a fun year. I have more confidence in the Cuda goaltending sqaud than the Sharks this year.

I can tell you one thing I'm going to miss from SAP as a season ticket holder, and that's the free parking. Got the E-mail on how much that's going to run us today, not thrilled about that.

I'm waiting after this homestand to see how I feel about this team (we've had two games against the same team, and in the first we let them back in it with the sort of mistakes I'd expect from us last season, ugh) but the one thing I am willing to say is our goaltending is the best we've had in probably five years or so. When the defense turns it over, I don't feel like it's about to end up in our net. It's great.

Little bit of a curious move, Zachary Emond has been recalled from Wichita. Barracuda were already carrying three goalies.

Cuda have often recalled goalies for development work.

Well, it's a day before gameday and Emond's still up here. I haven't seen any news (but really, how much news ever comes out about this team when we're not playing a game that day) but I am wondering if there's anything up with Strauss Mann, who didn't dress for either game last week despite a good preseason. Honestly I thought we'd seen the last of Emond.

In fact I'm anxious to see Saturday's lines in general. Coe didn't do much in place of Gushchin, so they could just end up swapping places again. Or, just to rile people even more, McGrath could come in for Coe. Games against Henderson can get chippy. Constantinou being sent to ECHL makes me think Cicek, Holway, or both are ready to go.

Just please don't wear the black jerseys again.

Coe again, on a deflection this time, 3-0. He’s looked great.

That fourth line is putting pressure on every time they’re out there.

After 2 periods now, Henderson is starting to up the pressure, but Dell has been stellar. Hard to find anyone to complain about at all so far.

Final score ended up 4-0 with Bordeleau netting his 2nd goal of the season.
Dell with a 34 shot shutout.

Quite a good start to the season from the kids.

Even on that last one, Bordeleau scored it after hopping on as the extra attacker because Robins drew a penalty and line 4 put on some pressure. That fourth line of Viel-Weatherby-Robins is not going to get many headlines for that game but Henderson had no answer for them at all.

If I had to nitpick one thing I didn't like tonight it'd be the power play, too much passing and no urgency.

Other than that, great, complete win tonight. Probably will write a little more after tomorrow's game.
