A lot of praise for Merkley…
I'm officially at the point where I have no clue what happens with Ryan Merkley. Plenty of praise in Nollenberger's article, sure, but 1) It's Nollenberger, it's not like that guy writes stuff that's critical of the players, and 2) He even points out Merkley's tendency to turn the puck over when he tries to slowly stickhandle around opponents, but the thing is that he just does that all. the. time.
For a long time this season I thought a reasonable expectation for him would be 3rd pairing/power play specialist in the NHL. But now the Barracuda have removed him from their power play units, and their power play now looks
better. Partially because kicking it back to the point man doesn't result in said point man occasionally just taking the puck and skating into traffic. Prior to the rash of injuries on the blue line, McCarthy was using Pouliot and Kniazev as the PP point men. After the injuries, Merkley was on the PP1 unit for a while, but now we're just using five forwards there, with Sieloff the only defenseman on the second unit.
Merkley is much improved in the defensive end, and he's cut back on some turnovers, but he's still got these habits that make him difficult to put into situations that you'd think you'd want him to be in. I wouldn't be shocked if the Sharks give him another callup to see what he's got, but I'm just at a loss. He's never going to be a shutdown defenseman, obviously, but what exactly is he going to be?
