Melnichuk's on probably his best run as a Barracuda over the last few games. 34 saves on 35 shots tonight. 4-1 Barracuda.

Could've been a lot worse if the SJ power play could finish tonight. 1 for 8 on the PP, including a full two-minute 5 on 3 that the Cuda couldn't score on. Rare to see the power play be so unimpressive.

This is the first time Melnichuk's allowed one goal in consecutive games in the AHL. It's only the third time in his AHL career that he's had two consecutive games with a .900 save percentage (and he's never had three in a row).

I do wonder if there's something rotten in San Jose's goalie or defense coaching (speculating that there's something wrong with their goalie scouting is not a new insight). Melnichuk wasn't good last year either, but Sawchenko has been much better in his two previous partial seasons with the Barracuda than he has been this year (and his first season was in a larger sample size). I don't know that anyone things Sawchenko is a realistic NHL talent anyway, but he has cratered this year and I wonder if the Barracuda's defense - either on a player level or a system level - is hurting both him and Melnichuk, or if he's being coached badly (and maybe got better coaching with Allen in the ECHL).

It's also possible that neither is actually a good goalie and that Sawchenko's good results the previous two years were a fluke.

It doesn't get talked about much, but Nabokov's record has a goaltending coach has to come under scrutiny...

It doesn't get talked about much because there just isn't much there. And that speaks more towards DW's complete inability to have any sort of handle on goaltending. Nabokov was a familiarity hire as a goalie coach. He spent four years as a development coach and scout with nothing of note to speak of to his credit then becomes goaltender coach. DW has only ever been able to do whatever Strelow was able to succeed with as a coach. Beyond that, it's been a guessing game with mixed results. They get seemingly positive results when they change over in the short term and then flame out. They have still been unable to produce anything within their system since Thomas Greiss. And I wouldn't hold out much hope for Ben Gaudreau.

The team's only been good at developing forwards for the most part. Their defense and goaltending development at all levels leaves a lot to be desired compared to most teams in this league.

The one thing that Melnichuk has done well the last couple games is control his rebounds, which has always been a big problem for him. I'm not saying he's fixed it, more like he's having a couple good games in that department and the numbers show that.

The Barracuda haven't had good goaltending since the days of Troy Grosenick and it feels like they keep trending downward in that department since then. The defense does suck, it's worth mentioning, but I haven't had the feeling that our goalie can bail us out for over three seasons now.

3-0 Eagles after 2 periods, Barracuda are incapable of getting it out of their own zone right now.

Raska is out with an upper body injury, btw.

Edit: I joined this one late and didn't notice, but Hamaliuk isn't playing. Looks like Cole Moberg is playing wing on the fourth line instead.

5-0 Colorado, final. Not a lot of positives, team just looked like they had no energy.

Melnichuk played pretty well for two periods and then looked rough in the third.

Would you chalk this up to the inconsistencies of a young team or just a general lack of talent?

This particular game? I don't know that it's either. They just came out flat and never got things going. I'd buy the reasons LS mentioned, even the guys that normally drive the play didn't have their A-game tonight.
