I like how he dodged the question of if we are a playoff team.

"Doug pitched me his vision for the future"
"As a coach, you coach for today but also coach for tommorrow"

Is this team a playoff team? "I'm a process oriented coach and don't think about tommorrow"

Lol
Basically saying no without being blunt about it. He definitely understands we aren't going to be good this year and he's here to develop us into a contender over the next few years.

Well, I'm late to this, but my initial thought is that this is a solid move. I do wonder if Steen signed off on it as well; he's going to be tied to the hip with Montgomery for the foreseeable future.

But Montgomery is a giant upgrade over Bannister, and I think we have the coaching staff around him to be better than we've been.

I’m sure Steen was involved and was okay with this decision. He’s familiar with Monty. Even though Steen didn’t play while Monty was an assistant here, he was still probably around the team a little bit to get to know him, and certainly would have gotten word from his (ex-) teammates on what they thought of him. All the players seem to love Monty so I doubt there were any concerns there.
