The mainstream media doesn't get onboard until the Rangers make the conference final usually. They are loathe to cover hockey despite the massive fanbase. Most of the media are extremely uncomfortable dealing with a sport they view as almost completely incomprehensible. It probably would've taken a cup to really cement things. If the team makes it back to the Stanley Cup Final in the next few years and pulls it off this time, then you might see things start to change.

Not only are more people in the area now Ranger fans, but there are more hockey fans in general.
Can you imagine if The Rangers accomplish what the LA Kings have? (2 Cups in 3 years) It will be bedlam in the Greater NYC area, and The NHL could potentially be vaulted into mainstream sports in the USA.
