How would the Oilers pay that cost for a goalie with no NHL experience?

I wanted Wallstedt that day. Of course Johnston would've been excellent as well including getting a recommendation from Coffey to the Oilers to pick him. It just didn't make sense to move down from a blue chip goalie prospect who the wild just signed to a 2x2 today as well.

He's a future #1 goalie. Something the Oilers don't really have in their system. What he got paid today is irrelevant to a team that traded down from him in order to get a player who ends up highly likely busting.

Future when? As of next season, a year they expect to win a Cup, he'd be taking up $2m of cap and seemingly a backup role showing absolutely no evidence of that 'future' projection.

The 'elite' goalie prospect market is currently inflated. That's with the current information available to us. If you go back to the date of that draft, the Oilers had recently spent a 2nd rounder on Olivier Rodrigue, who they were likely to prioritize.

I'm absolutely fine regretting the team's willingness to pass on Wyatt Johnston. But passing on Wallstedt always made logical sense. His current extension only compounds that.

In typical AHL fashion, our first game is Oct 11, then we don't play again for a week.

The last few years the opening game has been free to watch.

The way to watch games has changed FYI.

To be fair though aside from Anton Lundell this is pretty much what Florida's draft picture looks like for the same period.

Florida: Their first 4 picks in 2019 are all NHL players/Tweeners. Knights legit, Kolyachonok and Ludvig are 7th d, Schwindt is a 14th forward. Levi was trending well, Samoskevich looks legit. 2022/2023 drafts they mostly had later picks so who knows. No one stands out though

Vegas: Krebs looks like a bad pick but it helped them get Eichel, Dorofeyev is a legit every day player, same with Brisson from the looks of it. Zach Dean might punch an Oiler in the face sooner than later, Edstrom landed them Hertl.

Colorado: Got Byram (turned directly into a good 2c), Newhooks good and was moved for a 1st and 2nd (both prospects trending well). Barron is an NHLer(they turned him into Lehkonen), Aman is an NHL 4th liner. 2023 looks like a good draft for them.

Boston: Beecher is a 4th liner today, Lohrei made the bruins as a top 4 d, Lysell trending well, Poitras is an NHL player.

Toronto: Robertson is a player, Amirov was trending well till he died, Knies is struck gold same with Cowan.

Dallas: "Sparse" Is fine when those 3-4 guys are as good as they are. Harley is a top pairing defender, Bourque is a 3c today but has tons and tons of upside, Johnston is borderline elite and Stankoven is in the same place as Bourque but a winger. Bischel is on the cusp of making their lineup same with Kyrou.

Oilers: Broberg might be a 4/5 d, got a 2nd for him, Holloway is an NHLer but will most likely be limited Offensively. Wanner might be a 6/7 d eventually? Schaefer helped us land Ekholm. Akey is intriguing but that missed year could be huge. And thats it.

So while we look relatively similar, all of those teams still have multiple good pieces OR have multiple good pieces that they traded them for. Basically our entire draft for those 5 years the only piece of quality or note we have from them is Ekholm, which is a good piece but thats it. We have been awful at drafting and asset management.

We were looking at the 2019-2023 drafts. Which equals Broberg and Holloway and thats it.
