Yes, this is true. It's one thing to suspect, another to actually prove. Babcock just admitted to it.
I thought that it was an odd way to word it. He could have simply had said "we went from finishing last and getting Matthews to..."

I think the argument is that players don't tank.
And I see every board say this. Not just the Leafs board.

The funny thing about the Leafs tank is they ended with 69 points, which is the highest last place points total since 2015 (didn't bother to look prior.)
Even with an orchestrated tank, they're still really lucky to have finished last.

When posters claim "leafs should tank", no one actually beleive the players would be in on it. Dressing an AHL goalie + 50/50 AHL/NHL grinder split would do it everytime.

Uhh... no. I don't think like that at all, and didn't say anything like that either. I just think Babcock is an asshole, just like you probably think I'm an asshole. There no cancel culture there, it's just two people thinking other people are assholes. Get over it.

The Marner 'incident" seems so silly to me, why are people making a big deal out of it?
I think Bab's was a good coach but he was too adamant and the players needed a new voice. He lost the room and he got fired for it... happens all the time.
Let's not make him a monster because of these 'accusations'. There are real monsters out there and he is not one of them.

Everyone knew about the Mike Modano scratchings at the time and Mike Commodore was very vocal about his time under Babcock. Im sure Shanny knew about that stuff. Not sure exactly when the Franzen stuff came out but with Shanny having so many close ties with Redwings players and staff, I'm sure he knew something about it.
Also love the cancel culture comments.

Calling someone a jerk/asshole/pointing out bad things, isn’t “cancel culture”.

The only reason the "bad guy" side of the story is getting so much airplay is because Mike Babcock had spent years building the Mike Babcock brand, building Mike Babcock up as a larger than life "hardass with a heart of gold", almost a trope. His portrayal of himself with his mental health advocacy is the reason it's so jarring.
"Hardass loses room, coach's style and decisions were holding back team" is a standard sports story that would have flowed through the cycle and be done.
"Hypocrite was asshole, creates toxic work environment and completely lacks self-awareness" is just a tad bit juicier

This goes beyond cancel culture. Babcock is just an overrated douche who was exposed. Followed by hundreds of excuses and unwillingness to own anything.
Players/Management will never be able to take him seriously ever again. After Torts is fired, arrogant coaches will never be seen again.
