Confirmed with Link: Avs acquire Casey Mittelstadt for Bo Byram

I love 37 from the ROR days before he turned into a prick.

More than happy with fatty keeping that number.

I'm still so weirded out how popular that number has been.

Chris Drury
Dean McAmmond
Ryan O'Reilly
J.T. Compher

And now Mittelstadt. Not counting the career minor leaguers who also wore it.

Former Av Martin Rucinsky also wore it in his Nordiques days before switching to 25 a year later.

Listening to the most recent PDOCast and Megan Angley is a guest. Right at the beginning she said that Bo probably wasn’t going to stay past his current contract as he is interested in being a 1/2 somewhere else and that wasn’t going to happen here.

It wouldn't be super surprising, or unreasonable, if he did. Colorado was a terrible spot for Byram the minute they traded for Toews let alone extended him.

Problem is I'm not sure Buffalo is that much better... but if Dahlin truly plays on the right side, it's already better situation than Colorado.
Granato has indicated Bo will play first pair with Dahlin.

Oh shit, he might actually be worse than MacKinnon in the faceoff dot.

CANCEL THE DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a Sabres fan....I'll say this about Mitts' faceoff ability:

Expect a 2/1/1 system.

2 games where Mitts will get his face stomped in the dot (think like winning 3 of 15 type deal).
1 game where he'll be even or close to
1 game where he'll stomp the face of his opposition in the sot (think like winning 12 of 15)

Ah, well, that should make things more fun if nothing else.

I had to watch Tyson Jost attempt to win draws for years (and I'm sure you did too) so I think I'm ready.

Maybe Bo's not overrated, maybe it's just this place that underrated him. A GM traded Mittelsdadt straight up for him, who many really like, and a pretty hockey knowledgeable guy who's always 100% honest said this.

"(Bo's) an amazing player. I'm excited to see him develop in Buffalo. I think he's gonna be a stud. More so than he already is."

How's Mitt's shot and skating? We've been hearing conflicting answers.

His wrist shot is underrated. Accurate and hard. He just doesn't use it enough. Not sure I've ever seen him try a slapper or a backhanded shot.

His skating, IMO, is pretty average-to-good. His top end speed is fine, but it takes a second to get there. His edges are fine, even better with the puck on his stick. VERY strong on his skates.

There's no reason to think Toews was going to be on the top pair forever. Bednar already paired Bo with Makar for a lot of shifts every game, a lot more than Girard, who he rarely did.

If Toews started to regress, or even went back to the level he was playing for 1.5 years after the Cup win, and Bo's game progressed, or just started playing like he did in the playoffs, then 100% Bednar would have swapped Toews and Byram. As soon as next year maybe. Both would certainly have been possible given Toews is 30 and Bo's 22.

This actually puts a lot of pressure on Toews to maintain a high level of play. Hopefully he does. Avs are gonna need him.

I dunno. It's entirely possible that 2021- 2022 was the best Bo Byram was ever going to be and he'd never get there again. . Hope not. Probably not. But possible. Because we've never seen him play close to that level since. For whatever reasons, valid or otherwise.

I keep going back to Toews' comments a couple of months ago: "There are some guys who think they are playing well, but aren't"

I think those comments were aimed squarely at RyJo and Byram. Maybe more. I think Bednar and MacSakic knew that as well. And the last 24 hours maybe reflects that.

This has been debunked by Bednar himself. He said on the radio that he was talking about the new forwards who were cherry picking and not helping the transition game.

Bo had been critical of his game all year, Toews comments didn't match him at all.

I mean she said that’s what her and the media team was hearing. And it makes sense.

Also I think the Avs signed Toews to the contract they did with the intention of him being Cales partner for the immediate future and that also makes a ton of sense. They’ve been the best D pair in the entire league and there’s zero reason to break that up. I don’t really see how it adds any pressure on Toews that isn’t there already either.

Disagree it makes sense, for the reasons I mentioned, but it puts pressure on Toews because Bednar had paired Bo with Cale a lot, and had been reluctant to pair Girard with him during games.

Maybe that changes, but I don't think that's their preference, so they may play Toews a lot more now.

They don't have another LD on the team to step into that role if Toews regresses, and they won't have the cap space, high draft pick, or trade assets to find a top pair D man any time soon.

Only LD's in the system to hopefully make the team at this point are Behrens and Gulyayev, but both seem closer to the Girard mold of player, so they may not pair them with Cale much either.

So there's pressure in the team sense that if Toews game falls off, the team could be in scramble mode. But hopefully that won't be an issue, or at least not for a little while.
