Avalanche board mock draft/offseason (Part 2):

henchman21

Mr. Meeseeks
Feb 24, 2012

This will be a full 7 round mock draft, if we can get everybody to play along. This will use the prosportstransactions.com order with the Avs having the 103rd pick in the 4th round and assuming the Kings win the Cup.

Any player or their rights can be traded, and picks can be traded between GMs. No limits to how many trades you can make, but no future draft picks or conditionals shall be traded.

Draft Rules

The 2014 Avs Board Mock Draft will start at 3PM Mountain Time on Friday June 13th.

8 hours is the time frame available to make your pick, if you cannot make the pick in that time frame, a player will be selected for you (it will be the highest ranked North American skater available by central scouting). We all know that people sleep, so there will be a tad bit of leeway overnight. Now obviously everybody can't take 8 hours or we would never finish, so please pick as soon as you are ready. For any traded picks during the draft, the clock will not reset.

Avs Trades, Picks, and Signings

The Avs are going to be controlled by committee. That committee still needs 1 member at this point. I'd actually prefer if they were not apart of the other GMs, but if we cannot get outside parties we may have to have some of the GMs here join.

This committee will not be making any trade proposals. They will merely decide what trades are deemed worthy and accept them based on a vote between the committee in order to keep from having a bidding war and deals retracted. All trades that are lopsided will be thrown out (Don't even think about Bozak + 2nd for Duchene ). PM any trade proposals to any member of the committee (RockLobster, Bubba Thudd, Razor29, and henchman24).

For the draft, the committee will decide on a group of prospects and a poll will be setup during the first 3 rounds. In the poll there will always be an option for other, if you select other, you must post your selection. The poll will be up for a time period TBD (probably 4-8 hours). From the 4th round on, it will be the first player to get a TBD number of people wanting them (it will likely be the first 5 people to agree on a pick).

Any signings after the draft will be discussed by the committee, and they will decide who to sign and what to offer.

UFA Rules

-Any UFA cannot be re-signed until after the draft has completed
-Any re-signing will have to have at least 4 different posters agree that it is fair, to prevent teaming up, that can still be overruled if the contract is outrageous (IE Vanek for $4m per)
-After the draft has completed, teams have 48 hours to re-sign their UFAs or their rights are lost.
-Once the UFA period opens, the UFA group will be up for auction.
-The auction winners will be determined by a combination of AAV, NTC/NMC, and contract length, and voted on by which is better by a neutral party/ies (TBD).
-Once a player has been 'bid' on, a 48 hour window starts where teams can enter their contract terms

RFA Rules

RFAs will follow similar rules to UFAs, except teams never lose their rights. So any re-signing should follow the 4 person acceptance rule. Any offersheet will be the same. To keep out clutter, RFAs cannot be re-signed until after the draft is over.

This is the first year I remember anything like this for an offseason game. If we get into this, and somethings don't work... they will be tweaked as we go along. If they are not major they will just be remembered for next year. Feel free to suggest changes.

AslanRH's UFA list

This is the best I could do on notable UFA offers made in the thread.

and reading through the old thread I do believe we decided that if a good deal can be agreed upon by at least 5 GMs to re-sign a UFA rather than hit the market it can be done before bidding start (sorry, my mistake caused the confusion).
|Position|Current Team|Current Best Offer|Bidding Team|Votes +|Votes -
Ryan Carter|F|New Jersey|2 years 1.7m (.850m AAV)|New Jersey|4|
Mark Fayne|D|New Jersey|3 years 10m (3.33m AAV)|New Jersey|3|2
Tom Gilbert|D|Edmonton|3 years 3.75m (1.25m AAV)|Edmonton||7

Jerome Iginla|F|Boston|1 year 5m|Boston|4|2
Olli Jokinen|F|Winnipeg|1 year 1.60m|Winnipeg||4

Daniel Winnik|F|Anaheim|3 years 7m (2.33m AAV)|Anaheim|4|1
If we get agreement (5 or more votes? or majority in the debate?) I think we can call it final and remove them from the list.

193: Dmitrii Sergeev
197: Igor Shestyorkin

On my draft. After moving down in the draft to acquire Ryan, my draft was mainly about acquiring safe depth. Columbus already has some decent top line talents now, and some good high end prospects. So acquiring safe depth was the name of the game. 2 of the 3 forwards should pan out to middle 6 forwards. Bayreuther will add quick depth as he will probably only spend 1 more year in college and then go to Springfield.

My thoughts on the picks:

Ondrej Kase: The pick was a bit of a reach, but I didn't think he would last until 60 (50-55 ideally is where he lands in the real draft). He is a very elusive and agile winger with great hands, vision, and hockey IQ. His compete level is very high, and despite being thin is very willing to battle physically and go to the dirty areas. Plays both ends of the ice very well. The concerns on him are that his top end speed is fairly average, and he has a thin frame that will need a few years to round out to NHL size (probably tops out around 6' 195lbs). He would be more hyped if got more than 8 minutes a night on the senior team. Projection: 2nd line winger that can play in all situations, could play a 3rd line role if he doesn't pan out as a 2nd liner.

Vaclav Karabacek: Smart is the first word I would use to describe him. His hockey IQ is one of the better in the draft once you get out of the first tier. Beyond that, he is another winger who had great vision, isn't afraid of physicality or going to the dirty areas, and has a very high compete level (one of the harder workers in the draft). On the downside his skating is very choppy, he is strong on his skates and great balance, but his skating stride is poor and his first step needs work. He is also still learning how to play defense. He has come a long ways since his first game this season, but will need 2-3 seasons before he is ready defensively. Projection: 2nd line scoring winger

Keegan Iverson: Good (not great) skater, good size, plays a simple game with some jam, competes well (could be better in some areas). IMO likely doesn't have a top 6 skill set, but has the frame, ability, and drive to be a solid 3rd line tweener type. The type of player that can chip in 15 goals and be one of the leaders in hits. I'd like to see him compete better in the defensive zone, but it isn't a huge concern. Projection: bottom 6 winger with a chance at being a solid 3rd line tweener type.

Gavin Bayreuther: One of my favorite prospects in the draft. This will be his 3rd time through the draft. The first time he slipped through because nobody knew what sport he was really going to play going forward. The 2nd time, he had some off-ice issues in the middle of the season and was immediately sent to another junior team. This go round, he will be drafted in the first 3 rounds. He was phenomenal for St Lawrence as a freshman. One of the better freshman seasons I have seen out of a defensemen. Has good, but not great size at 6'1" 195lbs. Has great hockey sense on both ends of the ice and is a very fluid skater (the type of skater that can easily log big minutes). His shot is an absolute rocket and his vision is pretty good. He needs to continue to get stronger. IMO he is probably only 1 full year from being NHL ready in a bottom paring role, at most 2 years away with a year in the AHL. Projection: middle pairing defender that can play in all situations and be a trigger man on the top powerplay unit.

Dmitrii Sergeev: Kitchener was pretty damn terrible this year. They couldn't score, they had injuries, players were played in roles above their heads. It was just kind of a mess. The bright side is they have 4/5 pretty decent prospects that will be there for a few years and develop into a decent team. Sergeev came in as a bit of a surprise. At first he wasn't given minutes and had some injury issues, but about half way through the season, he really became their top shut down defensemen and logging a lot of minutes. He is a smooth skater for his size (not fast, but has very good edgework and balance), plays with a nasty edge, has great size, and is very poised under pressure. He has better hands and vision than he shows, he seems really tentative with the puck and wants to give it up to his partner quickly so that the partner can move the puck. I think the ability is there, but confidence isn't. He also has a surprisingly good shot. I think he will take a huge leap forward next year offensively and put up some very good all around numbers, but I don't see the offensive skill set translating to the NHL. He is very raw, but has the basic skill set that teams want in a shut down defender. Projection: If he makes the NHL it will be a in bottom pairing role stay at home role, it is a long shot and he probably heads back to Russia after a few years in the AHL.

Igor Shestyorkin: I haven't seen much of him, just a few KHL and U18 games... but what I have seen has been impressive. Super athletic and flexible with great reflexes, but needs somebody to teach him technique. So he is the typical Russian goalie that is super athletic, but doesn't know how to play a technical game. With some good coaching, he has potential. Projection: he is a goalie, impossible to tell for 5+ years. Athletically probably one of the better goalies in the draft.

Overall I am very happy with this draft. I see a good chance at 3 NHL players coming out of this group, with a decent chance of 4.

Hopefully every one will take the day off and

-list their RFAs and UFAs
-Updated trade interests if any
-(Cap situation and lineups would be nice too)

Then we can start posting offers and evaluating and finalizing on Saturday!

I think it could get as fun and chaotic as the first half of the draft.

Have we heard what the salary cap is yet?

How are we going to have it work regarding players that have already signed (like Nikitin).

Are they just being signed at the money that they asked for? Or are we assuming that they only want to sign with the team that they just did for that money?

The team/GM that has that players rights will have the option of honoring that contract, trading the player, or relinquishing the rights and letting that player enter FA.

Also, once we sign a player, if that player signs in real life for a higher AAV, the real AAV must be honored (I think this will really impact our RFAs). If the GM does not want to honor that AAV or can't do to cap space, then he has the same options as above.
