Willing to bet that when Matthews signed with RBC people torched him for that, too.

By 'obsessing over' I meant that people are over fixating on the caffeine issue in Canada when that product isn't even sold here to the best of my knowledge, and if it is I've never seen it. I've only ever seen the hydration drinks.
So in this particular situation (The Prime Deal) - Do you believe he warrants getting torched?

Not sure how this is worse than any large company. They are all corrupt in many ways and use deceptive marketing techniques or objectionable labor standards in developing nations.

The branding is hot, so could be good for the NHL. The hydration drink is trash - no sodium and no sugar kind of defeat the purpose of a hydration drink. 😆

The can says energy drink but the twitter handle says *prime hydrate* and they sign athletes. Confusing messaging.

Drinks with no sodium or sugar do not hydrate.
Agreed, obviously. 😁

I had never heard of Prime. It looks like a gross energy drink. What's the issue with him endorsing this? I guess cause it's unhealthy?

No professional athlete will ever drink Prime because it sucks. Secondly the guy on the right is one of the worst scammers on the internet and mostly markets his bullshit for children.

It's a 'let's make fun of Matthews' situation, lol, and a lot of that is because of the team he plays on.
I personally think it's warranted. You might not, but you're a fan of him and the team he plays for, so I'm not surprised there.

That's fine. Fairly confident if he played for a US team he would be pretty much universally well liked, but that's a different story. That said, I think if the NHL ever gets its shit together with the Olympics, you'll see a 2-3 week difference in perception about Matthews on this site.

EDIT - and if you think it's warranted that sort of reinforces my point that it's more about the player than the brand. Would you be in here calling someone like Kyle Connor a nerd if he signed with Prime?

Why are people so angry ?

The guy gets paid to simply advertise a sports drink

As easy money as it gets, good for him

Because he's now an associate with a known scammer and a scumbag and simply a bad product.

People also cheered for Brad Marchand when he played at the World Championships on Team Canada.

I don't really get what that has to do with anything.

The fact of the matter is, Matthews aligned himself with a world class piece of shit. Smart or not, and don't get me wrong, those guys make money. That said, It would leave a sour taste in my mouth.

My edit on my previous post sort of addresses this:

Anyways, like I said, wouldn't surprise me if you made fun of Matthews for signing with RBC or any other brand as well, so nothing new here.

My sources say McDavid is getting mad jelly and is itching to return to Toronto and start getting these sorts of deals

150% I would.

And I didn't, so... yeah.

I dont think the size of the can or bottle matters.

Just more than 180mg of caffiene isn't allowed in a single, packaged drink.

Otherwise companies like monster would just start selling 2L bottles, with the upwards equivalent amount of caffiene that a 473mL(16oz) can has.
Yes, I know.....you missed my point. The issue in Canada was with the 355ml can, not the 500ml plastic bottle sports drink....that has no caffeine

Interesting that Matthews isn't even the captain of Team Prime.

Prime and Auston Matthews has gotta be one of the most on brand pairings I've ever seen, and I mean that in the most insulting way possible.

Those two dickheads care for nothing but money, social media, and being a celebrity. Matthews fits right in

It’s got to be reputed to stop hair loss, right? I swear if that were a video we’d be able to see that hairline recede in real time.

wow, a little earlier in his career to be joining paul's retirement tour

hope they box at some point, the gifs and memes would outweigh anything that happened in the fight

Whataboutism at its finest!
LMAO I’m sure if a company came to you with a boatload of cash you would take the moral high ground and be like no I am not going to take some pictures and film a couple commercials. Don’t see any difference between this and Crosby being endorsed by corrupt corporations like Bell.

The drink is bad for you and the people behind the drink are bad people for myriad reasons. I personally have a bigger problem with the many NHLers endlessly shilling for gambling sites.

My age shows when I say it, but the down sides of “selling out” should still be a consideration for people of any age - and especially if the folks doing it are already rich. I absolutely understand why selling out is less of a concern for younger folks who are facing very real structural economic/cost challenges that previous generations did not face. It’s a BS mess out there and that feels valid. But shilling for bad people or companies should still give you pause - and “**** it, everything is terrible so I don’t care” only serves to make the world worse and enable antisocial people. /soapbox

I'm sure 99.9% of us are in a completely different financial situation than Matthews is.

Logan Paul is his connection into the WWE. Maybe we see Austin Matthews headlining a WrestleMania in the future? 😆

matthews has sold out for gambling sites as well... so yeah.

It's going to be hilarious in 20 years when matthews has rolled away with all his money, and the leafs are still actually looking for a hockey player to win a cup.
