Stunning if he gets chased out of town eventually by (some of) you guys.

Such an exciting player to watch, and he did not play badly. Had some bad luck too, and could not overcome it this time.

Get lost the selective apologists on here who simultaneously rip on other guys. He literally shied away from the puck last night, when he did get it he made low percentage passes, like he couldn’t wait to get it off his stick. Biggest game in his career and the guy has zero shot attempts halfway through the game, despite getting a pile of ice time.

Guess what, you don’t get to parse out golden boy Matthews in this series, he was pure ass the last three games. He wasn’t physically over matched, he was mentally beaten, by a team that was barely playoff caliber.

The lack of urgency in this guy is astounding. He has all the tools and physical makeup to put this team on his back and get it done, like all the other stars STILL playing. Instead he waits for the game to come to him, like we have all the time in the world. Last night was pathetic, again. Quit excusing Papi, it doesn’t work that way.

34 was garbage, a mental marshmallow. And that’s a fact no amount of blaming other things can mask. Sorry.

It's not about running players out of town, it's having accountability no matter the name on the back. We haven't had much to complain about Auston so far, but this 1st round certainly gave us a few things to talk about...

He is excellent when he shoots the puck....but is way overrated away from the puck. He doesn't come across like a winner. Post game game 7 he.looked as inept speaking as tiger woods

1000 percent agree..one of the best insightful posts I've seen online in a long time. Number 34 post game looked like a social idiot and a loser

I cannot believe people ate still defending this spineless, gutless faker.

Marner was a lot worse, so what? Matthews himself has also produced below his standards and abilities for 5 straight post seasons now. It’s not a trend. This is him.

Can't disagree Matty did not perform but it almost never occurs where you can trade a 1C unless you get a McJesus or a MAC .. Syd is too old .. and Oilers would be best chance for that kinda deal but they won't do it yet until McJesus says he wants out then they might

Matthews is a proper player. He was not nervous out there just snake bit. He was not making very basic gaffes and forgetting whether he should stick handle pass or shoot and gripping the stick tighter than a Toronto man on the streets grips a $5 bill on a windy day and looking like an OHL player out there. Marner is seriously immature in contrast and doesn't want to face uncomfortable situations. That's cause for concern. There's no reason to doubt Matthews. He'll come around. No dumb penalties, no dumb plays, no costing goal 1 of game 7, he played very responsibly just couldn't score. He'll come back

So with Matthews being UFA in 3 years, that choice is not ours to make.

This was an historic collapse.

Does Matthews react by saying I'm going to stay in Toronto until I win a Cup? Or, enough of this crap, I need a change?

Your answer to that creates a really clear path to what we decide to do with the 3 seasons we have left.

Matthews wouldn't be my first priority in trading but he's on the watch list. The guy just flat out disappears in big games. It's happened for years now so it's a pattern.

As a caveat I would say they NEED to trade Matthews before his contract expires and they get nothing in return. He's not coming back as a UFA. He's headed for California or Vegas.

My guess is that Matty re ups. Here but may want out before the end of that contract.

I don’t see how Auston Matthews leaves the leafs before he sets the all time record in goals. As much as people are mad now. The leafs are a global brand. Austin Matthews being the goal scoring leader for this team will cement him in history throughout the league.

He won’t score 220 goals in the next 3 years. Plus with the flat cap for the next 5 years. Toronto will be able to offer him front loading and SB that most others can’t repeat.

my guess.
Matthews signs 13.4 x 8. Front loaded. From 27-34 years old.

he sets the record in the first 3 years. After that. Maybe he wants to go somewhere else at 30. His contract will be half paid.

As I posted below. No way in my mind he leaves before becoming the all time leader in goals. Other teams will still be struggling from the pandemic. Matty will sign here..... whether he wants out half way through. Totally different story.

Montreal figured out that Marner can't shoot so if you stop Matthews from getting Marner's pass for the one timer, they both fail.

I wonder if other team follow this model because, if the do, I don't think Matthews will be on a 60 goal path next year.

Sorry but this is just a bad argument for trying to say he's enticed to stay.

Hockey itself is a niche sport and not well known in North America and the world compared to the other big sports

Matthews legacy won't be greater by becoming the leafs all time goal scorer. If he wants to be talked about as an all time great he will need to win a cup atleast. If we continually struggle in the 1st round he's going to be frustrated and realize his legacy won't be much outside of Toronto and even here he'll be recognized as a individual player not a leader and winner.

If things turn around and we win a series next year and have a run I'd keep him and feel confident he'll stay. However if we fall in 1st for a 6th time in a row. You have tk move him. Trade him and get a huge haul. We would have total control and would avoid him getting his NMC which would screw us over.

Matthews if he's going for the legacy aspect won't stick with the leafs. Breaking the goal scoring record is insignificant considering the leafs have a poor history of top players. If he thought chasing Gretzkys record was attainable here and was close maybe I could see the argument but he's got almost 700 goals to go and it's almost impossible he gets there.

His decision to stay with Toronto would be based on if he sees this team as capable of winning

Toronto isn’t good enough to win playoff rounds. Granted this year they should have won but Keefe didn’t do a great job and why was that PP bad for MONTHS without improving? It’s their most lethal weapon and they didn’t do a good enough job to address it. We could blame it on Tavares and Muzzin missing out but honestly the team isn’t a playoff powerhouse. Series was always a 50/50 imo.

You have to really decide in 2. I think he has a full NMC in the last year.
Nylander is also UFA then and at present he trends better in the playoffs than Marner. So how do you pay next contracts? Reg season? Reg + playoffs? Ability to produce at key moments? Who gets and asks for what next?

Hockey is a Niche sport. If he is the all time
leaf leading goal scorer. That’s millions upon millions in endorsements he won’t get anywhere else. Players are still making millions off toronto. Dougie was here for 4 years. It would be a huge benefit financially for the rest of his life.

Matthews can re sign in 2. All available evidence is that the cap will be flat and teams will be in tbr red for 5 years. Toronto can offer the most money. Full SB.

he can become the all time scorer by like 28. Get his big contract. Then ask out if he wants out. The odds of him leaving at 26 are pretty low in a pandemic

How many post this man hit in the series?

I thought he carried the first line, while Hyman and Marner were anchors

Absolutely was beast mode! The greats are consistent though which Matthews has not been able to achieve.

But are you not willing to give him another chance to be consistent?

There’s few players that can do what he did
