It happens. He’s just getting unlucky here with some posts, low shooting % and an injury.
Let’s see how he looks after another 4 days off. I’m confident he’s going to catch fire soon.
Last time we doubted Matthews people actually thought Anthony Duclair was likely to outscore him moving forward.
He had 3 shots, 4 hits, amd 3 blocks tonight. He's getting close to setting the world on fire again.

It’s not even just the goal scoring drought either. Earlier in this the season he looked quick and smooth out there. If Campbell wasn’t amazing tonight, the story line is whats wrong with Auston Matthews as he can’t even score on an empty net.
Matthews will bounce back, it will just take one greasy goal to go in for him and the flood gates will open.
Make no mistake, all good goal scorers go through slumps. Matthews will still win the rocket this season. Book it.

Still an elite player who can be a dominant force without contributing on the score sheet. Calgary accomplished nothing when he was on the ice

I remember the old forums and members would whine about how Mats Sundin can’t score and has lost his touch lol. Matthews is a future HOFer. This scoring drought will end in no time

Fantastic player, almost guaranteed HoF if he has a long career. But so far every year there are cold stretches or injuries or bad linemates or coaching used as excuses for why he can't get into the Hart voting. At some point if he's actually that caliber of player he has to just get it done. He's also had 3 shots at winner take all games in the playoffs and delivered nothing of significance.
Maybe he'll lose the Rocket because of a suspected wrist injury this year, but every year it's something.

We all have high hopes for Matthews to win a Hart and Rocket but the injury spell and slump have definitely killed the Hart bid and the Rocket is in a bit of jeopardy. If he’s not ready to put together a full Hart worthy campaign, that’s just how it goes.
We have also seen Matthews play at white hot levels and also cool off. Usually his verh hot streaks tend to be at the start of the year. In 2020 I think he cooled off around January but then rebounded when the pandemic shut down the league.
Would be interested to see him get back at it but it’s also important for him to finish the regular season strong and go into the playoffs with a lot of momentum. Also needs to play nastier hockey and really punish guys who want to play him rough.
When you see a tweet like the one below where Keefe says I want 4 lines I can play equally it becomes evident that the ice time Matthews gets and the offensive chances will NEVER be equal to McDavid.
Leafs having depth in the lineup and players like Marner, Tavares, Nylander hurts Matthews. Oilers can just keep throwing McDavid out there and pair him with a 50 goal guy in Draisaitl. To get assists you need to play with a big goal producing guy and Matthews has no such teammate.
PLUS this is the king daddy topper for McDavid and shows how lopsided the playing field is for Matthews. Three EDM players 1,2,3 in Power Play Total Time On Ice. Matthews is 49th on this list. BARELY in the top 50. It is impossible for anyone to out produce McDavid. PERIOD. It is not a level playing field.

That wouldn’t be the story line. When’s the last time a guy scored 82 goals in a season?
There’s going to be games that the guy doesn’t score, he’s the best goal scorer of his generation but he’s still human.

Maybe he's just not quite a Hart level player, at least not every year. Doesn't mean he's not still an absolute stud.
That guy isn't the best goal scorer in the world anymore, and he hasn't been for a while.
Ok Dekes, winning the Rocket 7 out of the past 8 seasons doesn't count because of a 30 game sample in an anomalous season.
1. This season is just as valid as any other.
2. What Ovechkin did 8 years ago is irrelevant when discussing now.
3. Rockets are for most raw goals scored over a particular period of time. It is not an award for the "best goal scorer".

If you get the award for best goal scorer in the league your the best goal scorer. Raw goals determine who the best goal scorer is. Per/60 stats inflate a players worth and lead to disapointment when they constantly under deliver
What ifs don't apply in real world discussion about best goal scorer, best play maker, best offensive talent
If matthews end with the rocket this year hes the best goal scorer with no arguments. If someone else wins it they are the best goal scorer.
Ovechkin is within 7 goals of another richard. Hes scoring pretty consistently and McDavid and Matthews have to score if they dont want him to take another rocket home

Scoring the most goals makes you the best goal scorer. Its 1+1 = 2, simple and easy to see but for some reason you dont see it.
Matthews wins the rocket and keeps winning hes the best goal scorer despite what gpg,/goals/60 any other player may have
If he keeps on falling short he wont ever be recognized as the best goal scorer in the league.
It's up to him to deliver. He's been missing tap in chances recently
