Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

The result is Marleau, Matthews and Marner playing house and the team dressing in Halloween costumes for insta.

as do other teams wayy before them. again you don't have to like them but let's not jus make it this is just them who does it.

MLSE has a "woke" problem. However, you want to define that. They're more interested in virtue signaling than building a good hockey team.

The Dubas era made me want to puke. Remember when they did a press conference cause Reilz yelled 'Rag-it!'? LOL

I think they did that because of comments from the public and/or media and it is just the way things are these days.

in an over-sensitive world...sure

To me..he's just a regular hardass hockey coach.

I have no issue with them getting rid of AM. If the return is good...take it all day.

This team needs an enema.

I'll say it, sure, some of Babcock's methods were archaic, but if we were still around and was able to see through his vision over his 8-year contract (and beyond), I am convinced the Leafs would have won a Cup by now.

It's kind of ironic how everyone was shitting on Babcock for being too harsh with some of his weirdo tactics, and were gushing over Keefe being a player's coach who would relate to and bring the best out of these guys, are now turning on Matthews, Marner and Nylander for being a bunch of sissy pansies who just can't get it done.

They went from a hardass coach, to a player's coach who coddled these guys, to now a tough as nails coach -- and none of them have gotten through to them. At some point, which would be now, you have to stop looking at everyone else and start to realize that these guys may indeed be the problem.

Something's gotta give, and it's gotta be drastic.

I am going to say this.

I'm not going to poop on Marleau and Thornton for being loyal because we've pooped on people here for not being loyal. Also. Marleau and Thronton have won things in their careers. they couldn't get it done in San Jose. i don't think that's fair on them at all. (you can not like them - but i'm not going to deride what they have accomplished just because they haven't won a cup).

Winning the Cup is all that matters, so they didn't win anything I care about. That the individual awards matter? Wrong message to be sending to the kids.

Marner is one 100% No doubt

Unless Johnny takes like 5 mil which he won't....he's one too

We're talking 20 mil in cap space right there. I would have no problem trading Matthews for a good return either.

i didn't say anything about individual awards. I said Marleau and Thornton have won before. they know what is like to play under pressure and win at the highest level. there are also a lot countless leaders out there who haven't won but put in the effort. there are people who have won the Stanley Cup that I wouldn't trust with a goldfish. like i said. If people want to hate on them go ahead and do that. I am all about not liking people right now. but I will give people their credit where it is due.

i've been saying this from the Kessel era. a lot of times we blame everyone but the people involved and if we like the big name (and you even see it here people blaming MARNER for MATTHEW'S play) we blame everyone else too.

at some point even if they were coddled (which they were). you still need to point the finger at the baby and go you have the issue here baby. deal with it.

A sniper who's potted one career playoff goal against Florida should take a seat in row 34 and wait for his complimentary pretzels and soda.

One was Marner 100%

Matthews had to do all the work while he hides up high.

Marner is gone, but perhaps it was instructive at Four Nations, he had two clutch moments. Matthews had zero, another post and failure.

I love that this was a playoff team, I mean those lean years the leafs had between 2005-2013- 2016, were not a fun time, I just hope we do not go full rebuild, but I get changes have to be made, Matthews did not have a good season, but I kind of want him back lol

I predict Johnny will take <5M.

He has no intention of leaving Toronto and is in the same position as patches essentially where his career is coming to an end and he wants a chance to win still. His decision was to do it here, and he said "Yes" when asked if he wants to stay, without any hesitation, and said they are not giving up. He will give a team friendly deal

Just my prediction

It's too bad Babs was an over the top control freak/dick. If his act was just 20% less toxic, the team maybe doesn't quit on him. But then again, it might not have mattered in the end either.

Oh stop yapping about Four Nations already. You spent months slobbering all over Marner for his play there, you grossly overstated it, you posted ad nauseum about how he's grown, he's changed, he's different and he's going be amazing in the playoffs and you were as wrong as can be. Go sit in the corner and be quiet for a while, sheesh.

He threw his teammates under the bus with a microphone stuck in his face, that's the act of a coward and I don't see how anyone on the team can have any respect left for him after that. He either has to apologize and make it one helluva heartfelt, believable apology or he can't be back as captain next season. This already seems to be a group of individuals as opposed to being a team and after what he did, it's hard to how it doesn't get worse from here if he's still captain next season.

The question I have been wrestling with is... did he rehearse what he would say if it was a catastrophic failure?

I mean, to say what he said is almost an effort to get moved.. You anger everyone in the organization and its seismic. You know nothing will be the same after you utter those words.

If Marner leaves, then hopefully Matthews will want out as well.

Please please PLEASE trade Auston. I can't bear to watch him as "captain" for another year and another year and another year after that. Every time I see him in an interview my instinct is to look away from the screen, that's how much I can no longer stomach him

I for one do not take what he says to the media very seriously, second he is a number 1 center, those are really hard to find, I do not want him traded, we can still build around him and make a run at this thing

I don’t care what he wants or gives the team. They should move on from Tavares.

Enough of the retirement “Club Med” deals for these local guys.

Who do you want for Matthews? You are begging to trade a top 3 player in NHL? What do you want?

Top 3 player in the NHL ? Lol, no chance. Look at him in the playoffs, he isnt even a top 10 guy. Highest paid yes. He signs 5 year contract, then 4 year contract. Thats some brutal leadership/buy-in from the captain. Clearly he wants max money before playoff success. His 60 goal seasons are pretty special sure, but he is the most over rated guy in the NHL. He is soft, doesnt show up in big games, aloof about every situation. Calls the team out for too many passengers but had 1 goal in 7 games, that pro rates to 12 goals over 82 games.
