Outside of Tom Wilson, these players don't exist. They need to be trusted to play first line minutes.For me it's not 'in place of' but 'in addition to'.
Matthews/Marner need a Tom Wilson type on the other wing.

Yep I didn’t say it would be easy.Outside of Tom Wilson, these players don't exist. They need to be trusted to play first line minutes.
these 2 were not very good in their final 4 games they dissappeared when their team needed them the most....Really depends what n how you define a “superstar”
- regular season warrior with not much n playoffs is a superstar?
- if the said superstar cannot score are they bringing in any other element to change the course of the game in the post season?
bottom line is you gotta show compete not just in regular season but also post season. Gotta bring other elements to the ice if offensive production is not there. For comparison you can compare Ovi, Draisaitl, McDavid, Tkachuk, Mack, etc… basically when they are not scoring they are crashing and banging along the boards and making their line mates better and giving their team a chance to win. Do you really think Tavares, Matthews and Marner when not scoring bring any other element for success? Just look at our playoff history; heck just look at 2nd round tilt against panthers for recent example
Hopefully we have an adult in the room this time to tell them nope....out you go if you want shit like that.Hayes is spot on.
Leafs stars live in their own bubble while almost every other superstar has common sense. You would think Toronto was negotiating with 2-3 prime Wayne Gretzkys with what these guys asked for last time around.
Even now, imagine putting up 85 pts in 75 (11 pts in 11 playoff games) and then turning around asking for 14-15M a year (likely not even for 8 years lol).
These guys want massive signing bonuses, NMCs, the best facilities, endorsements, and still want the highest cap hit. Just pure greed if the same thing happens this time around.
Do it back….?What do you propose he do?
The league and especially Bettman wants them to succeed. What better way than to give them a hometown superstar.I'm sorry but you make it sound far more simplistic than it actually is.
Just in this example, in what world do you think Arizona is going to pony up a $7.2M bonus on July 1?
100% correct.You know he can sign the contract date it july 1 and leafs file it july 1... it just would be offcial until then
Yep, Hayes is spot on. Johnson lost all credibility when he said, "Why does Auston Matthews need to give the Leafs everything?" The Leafs gave this kid a blank check for 5 years and have given him, and the entire core, everything they have asked for. The Leafs would gladly make Matthews the highest paid player in hockey history with a $100 mil deal (8 x $12.7) but according to Johnson, that's "nothing" for Auston. In my opinion, it's put up or shut up time for Matthews and company. Either commit to the franchise and be cognizant of the hard cap or tell the team you want out so they can trade you.Hayes is spot on.

You always have to prop up the Leafs by slagging another teamthese 2 were not very good in their final 4 games they dissappeared when their team needed them the most....
in fact outside of last year there numbers in playoffs are rather pedestrian.
Tkachuk scored 0 goals in the leafs series, in fact his previous playoff runs in Calgary would get him eviscerated here.
nope just making the facts known; you always have to prop up other players when we all can see there needs to be changes in composition of the team. Its pretty simple that the players being named have blemishes on their resumes so grass aint always greenerYou always have to prop up the Leafs by slagging another team
It's confusing
So the rest of the NHL owners are going to throw more money at Arizona so they can pay Matthews his $7.2M bonus while helping the Leafs out their contract jam? Not very feasible.The league and especially Bettman wants them to succeed. What better way than to give them a hometown superstar.
That pretty much says it allMacKinnon: I just delivered the Cup, but I'll be happy with $100K more than McDavid and I'll do it for max term.
Matthews: I just helped deliver the first playoff series win in 19 years and I sucked in round #2 but I want to be the highest paid player by $1-2m and only for 3,4 or 5 years. Oh yeah, and I want huge signing bonuses to be deposited in my bank account every July 1st.

I guess we will find out soon enough. My bet? people aren't going to like what's coming lolLots of people out there putting words in Matthews mouth. He’s never said anything about being the highest paid player or the term he’s interested in yet people are criticizing him for it anyway. Lots of people speculating, including media, but nobody knows anything

3x13ish…he wants the highest salary and to hit free agency again before 30.I guess we will find out soon enough. My bet? people aren't going to like what's coming lol
I intend on panicking.Shouldn't be shocking. Player wants to stay, management has been very vocal about extending him. Zero chance of a trade.
The contract details will be finalized by camp. But don't panic if it's not announced 12:01am July 1st.
Well there is his history of negotiating with the leafs and in jr. While there may not be a direct quote, there is absolutely nothing in his history that suggests he will commit 8 years or not demand absolute top dollar.Lots of people out there putting words in Matthews mouth. He’s never said anything about being the highest paid player or the term he’s interested in yet people are criticizing him for it anyway. if he wants everyone to love him and not have pressure of a contract and was smart... he signs July 1 for 12.7 x 8... end of storyDoesn't really take a lot of time to type out $1x million, y years. NzC.
x = 0-9
y = 1-8
z = T, M
That said, I think if he signed July 1st, it would be a big PR win whatever the terms are. It would show a level of commitment and enthusiasm and dial down the in-market anxiety which is getting a little much.
When you want to predict how a person will react in the future, experts generally agree it’s best to turn an eye to the past. Looking at how the person has acted previously can lead to a fairly accurate prediction of future behaviour. After all, the past generally repeats itself, doesn’t it?Lots of people out there putting words in Matthews mouth.
