A modern-day centre-playing version of Dany Heatley.

Soft-as-butter, only playing for the stat-sheet and the pay-day.

No-show in the playoffs.

I'm sure I could fit another hyphen in there..

Heatley did have a filthy shot. And he was surprisingly big like Matthews and didn't play overly physical. Very tragic situation with Heater.

Perhaps I’m misremembering but didn’t Matthews want 8 years last time but Dubas negotiated him down?

Matthews had two offers on the table, one for 3x$9M, which Dubas rejected, and one for 8 years with an undisclosed AAV, but believed to be higher than McDavid's, which Dubas also rejected.

"According to Friedman, the Leafs wanted to sign Matthews to a three-year bridge deal that would’ve taken him one year away from unrestricted free agency. However, Matthews’ camp was seeking a $9M annual hit, which the Leafs weren’t interested in doing. "

"By lowering his initial demand for an eight-year deal to five and in turn lowering the AAV"

Either way doesn't look good on Dubas.

Marner also was willing to sign a three year bridge, to which Dubas said no.

No matter how I look at it, Dubas botched the negotiations.

The five year deal with last year NMC isn't unique to Matthews for a player of his caliber. What is unique, is the front loading as much as possible and maximizing of guaranteed signing bonuses, which would be paid no matter what, even in the event of a labor dispute.

So if the NHLPA and NHL didn't agree on a collective bargaining agreement the last time around a few years ago, all those Leafs players would have still been getting paid, while the rest of the leagues players went without.

Incidentally, not that it matters for these two guys, but the structure of those contracts also effectively make them buyout proof.

They are, so far as I can tell, the most player friendly deals in the history of the NHL. With the Matthews deal as shining example.

That's on Dubas.

If no other team is willing to give them that much money up front again, and in the form of guaranteed signing bonuses, along with the eighth year, no team can match financially what the Leafs will be offering.

If it's money Matthews wants, it's money Matthews will get.

Why do people keep pushing this tired and stupid narrative that is so far outside reality?

It's really pathetic that there are many dead set on making things up to to rile up the moronic masses who have no critical thinking ability.

A quick search disproves this theory.
At the time when Toronto was eliminated, Matthews was one of the most physically engaged players of the 16 teams.

I wonder what people like this get out of pushing lies....

Weird to me.

He should have been punching Stamkos stupid ugly face already instead of picking up sticks.

Remember this:

Or this:

I find it hard to believe ANYONE would attempt to defend Matthews as being a physically dominating individual that would willingly engage in a fight.

They don't need the supposed leader of the team acting like the Cheshire Cat every time there is a scrum or fight.

Disappearing all but the goofy smile.

He definitely shouldn't be fighting. He is a physical player though.

Oh...

Why shouldn't he be fighting? If you are going to say he's too afraid to get hurt, then my response would be to say he's too afraid.

Period.

Stamkos has punched Lafreniere, Tavares, Matthews in the face.

Amongst others.

One of these things is not like the others.

As in Stamkos has been a MASSIVE success compared to those other three guys put together.

Who would you rather have on your team?

As a fan, I'm embarassed for these guys whenever something like this happens.

One thing some people are forgetting is matthews went from scoring 60 goals to 40 goals and has a nagging wrist injury. I think making him the highest paid player in the league with his playoff performance and his reduction in stats with injury concerns will basically ensure Toronto will not be winning the cup. Trade him with Retention and get what you can get

No, I am saying we need him to play. Matthews fought Stamkos.

Be embarrassed. It makes no difference to me.

When you lack pride it's easy to brush away failure and all the embarassment that goes with it.
Is this some of the woke stuff people talk about? As you are the one embarrassed, try not to brush away failures, don't take the sport so seriously that it affects your day to day life. Fans should enjoy the game in my opinion. As for pride, there are plenty of ways to have pride in what you do and in who you are. I don't know what works for you, but I have found that self-confidence works.

It's telling that when you want to ragdoll someone on Leafs you can pick Matthews.

Marner hacked the system, he is so weak fighting him and beating his ass improves nobody's reputation.

If Matthews starts declining in 4 years, trade him tomorrow before Tim Horton's opens. He's going to get a 2 to 2.5 million raise during a couple of stagnant cap years which means the Leafs will actually lose more talent around him. By the time the cap starts to increase by a few mil (maybe in 2 years) Matthews will be ready to decline.

Not to mention, players like Sid, Ovie, Pavelski, etc. are still performing at a high level well into their late 30s. If Matthews starts declining at 29 or 30, that either means his body can't hold up, he doesn't take his conditioning serious enough, or he's just not that great.

Of course the Leafs want to commit to him long-term lol. But he wants all the leverage to keep signing future deals to maximize the dollars of the time. That's what this whole thing is about. Unfortunately, as a leader on the team, he will be setting the example...

If he settles for 12.6 then Marner likely requests 11. If he settles for 14.2 then Marner likely requests 12.6, etc. The Matthews contract has massive implications when it comes to resigning the other players as well. It's all about precedent setting.

Crosby is still playing at a high level, but he did decline at 30. Age 19 to 29, he was top-3 in league scoring 8 times (every year that he was heathy).

From 30 on, he’s been too-5 once.

Something I heard today actually made my jaw drop.

RBC which is the sponser of the Canadian Open, the same RBC that pays Matthews scads of money to appear in those kind of limp commercials and act as a spokesperson for them. They asked Matthews to come and participate in the Opens celebrity pro-am, which he flat out refused to do.

You would think that a guy who supposedly "loves Toronto" not to mention makes some sweet coin from their association, couldn't be bugged to come up to the city he "loves" get to meet the new GM, shoot a nice easy round, get feted and pick up some swag thats fit for a king.

Not in love atm , perhaps?
This nails it right on the head………he doesn’t give a crap. It’s all about the money

Where did you hear that? Do you have a link.

Excellent point. If I am Buffalo I keep building. Dahlin and Power on the backend. I'm jealous.

Leaf would take the MacKinnon deal in a heartbeat for Matty IMO. He's getting at least that and probably for less term.
A shorter term for Matty in his prime will for sure be more. Cap is going to rise rapidly so he has little incentive to sign long. Big money, short term incoming.

So the rest of the NHL owners are going to throw more money at Arizona so they can pay Matthews his $7.2M bonus while helping the Leafs out their contract jam? Not very feasible.

Ok what's your next suggestion? Columbus ?
Nope, Arizona.
Look, if AM does not agree yo sign new agreement by June22, is it not possible that he is planning on leaving. Maybe Dubas who said he didn't want out, lied, and maybe he knows AM wants out. Everything changed with the Leafs when Dubas and his agent changed the game. Obvious there was tampering.
The risk of walking with no compensation is too high.

Too bad there's no self confidence cup. LOL
