Not actually sure now said, but I’d always considered the naming of C’s and A’s the purveyance of coaches. Probably isn’t in the corporate world of the Leafs, genuine revaluation moment.
I was thinking about the acquisition rather than the captaincy. I believe league wide it has historically been management either naming or asking the players to name the C. Its not a democracy unless the club wants it to be. I don't think KD consulted Babs about his significant player moves at all though, hence the awkward relationship.

If we sign Matthews to close to 14m x 5, the only way the team can compete for the cup is if we trade away marner and nylander and surround matthews with a team of lesser stars (a few 7m to 9m players). Our window will start basically when Tavares' contract expires.

What we can't afford is giving marner close to Matthews' contract (like last time) and 10m to Nylander.

Shanny has to be in on the 11m UFA signing, its not going through without Board level approval. Hard sell from KD to Shanny and BoD of I need to make this move, can see it, with them going ok then.

Willy contract drama
Marner contract drama
Dubas contract drama

I don't like where this is heading. Why would AM be any different at this point?

Probably because everyone recognizes Matthews is more important than those on your list.

It’s an easy deal, it should come in at 13x5 or 14-15x8
But he has only ever surpassed 85pts once in 7 years and is well under a ppg in the playoffs. 14M???

Look at what McKinnon actually delivered and what he signed for. I want AM back but not at some fanciful number that has no actual connection to what he brings on a regular basis. Auston its time to start being a pro.

How will salary cap crunch play into Treliving, Maple Leafs' negotiations with Matthews?

2:25 | June 1, 2023

Elliotte Friedman joins the Jeff Marek Show to discuss how new Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving will approach contract negotiations with Auston Matthews, and why the salary cap could be a major sticking point in a new deal.

He is at 0.88 points per game in the playoffs.

Matthews has the same "me first, me most important" attitude that has come to define the core of this team.

He's just out to get his.

He got everything he wanted the first time. He knows he's going to make bank again. The team can lick his feet all they want.

It's easy to be patient when all you care about is money.

The whole core is a bunch of spoiled rich kids. With Matthews leading the way. His demands for special privileges have led to entitlement and controversy.

A player paid that kind of money to be a leader, and acting like a demanding child, is not helping the team.

The smart players know enough to keep their mouth shut. Instead of looking like spoiled rich crybabies. Whose only goal is to make as much money for themselves as possible.

More worried about taking care of the name on the back of the jersey than the one on the front.

Matthews had 60-goal seasons and was MVP. You can't ignore everything but point totals.

15x3 years so he can get paid properly when JT is off the books?

I agree. Everyone keeps saying we need to pay our stars because you win with them etc. I wouldn't mind paying them if they showed well in the playoffs. That's what you are paying for...not freezing up in big games like they have. I would rather have some lesser players who show up like FLA has now. It makes a big difference IMO.

Considering he won't sign before July 1st, Matthews will have the Leafs by the balls and will get
14-15 million on a 3-4 year deal or on a 8 year deal.
If he asks for 14-15M then you know you pretty much will never win with him. If money is more important to him than taking a bit less...well...that pretty much sums up our problems with this core.

I have always said...What can you buy with 14M that you can't buy with 12m? How is a lousy 20% extra on top of huge money going to change your life?

How is this not bad faith discussion?

2016 - 40 goal rookie year had 69 points in 82 games
2017 - 63 points over 62 games paced for 84 points and 45 goals
2018 - 73 points in 68 games paced for 88 points and 45 goals
2019 - 80 points in 70 games paced for 94 points and 55 goals (season shortened due to Covid and not injury)
2020- 66 points in 52 games paced for 104 points and 65 goals (season shortened due to covid)
2021- 106 points in 73 games paced for 119 points and 68 goals (with an injured wrist to start the season)
2022- 85 points in 74 games paced for 94 points and 45 goals (with an injured wrist)
