Preferences in scenarios for Matthews and other elite players aside, the question is: Is it feasible to construct a championship team with a few players eating anywhere from a quarter to forty percent of the cap?

If Tavares was replaced with an actual 9-11 million caliber center it wouldn't be that hard at all.

Sportsnet at least, is talking like Matthews signing a max 3 year deal to maximize his earnings is a foregone conclusion. $14 x 3 then and do it all again? This is a new strategy to further squeeze the clubs. They can participate in it or not. They can choose not to be the first team to go down that road and maybe avoid it with their other current players. Colorado didn't do it with Mac and Boston didn't do it with Pasta. Its like a reverse home town discount :)
This is what i am sure dubas believed in too.. in treating his best players nicely

Stay with us.. sign mid term deals and maximize your earnings

They're not the first team to go down this road. The stars of the San Jose Sharks took similar contractual stands. And then Lou and Babs thought Marleau, a guy who constantly chased the bag with shorter term deals during his prime, would be the perfect veteran to mentor Matthews and Marner

This.

I'm tired of setting this precident. It always snowballs. Sadly I think it's too engrained in this core thanks to Dubas. He built a huge snowman of entitlement

13x5. You want a penny more then we need to trade him imho
It is too high .. you can't pay a guy as TOP man in league when he is NOT top man in league .. in fact McJesus, MAC, Kuch Stammer and Marchand are all better players than Matty .. he needs to EARN what he makes .. if we keep giving it to him we will stay LOSERS

Didn't he win the Hart last year at 24? lol You people seriously need help.

There are arguments for most of the players you listed, but in no world Stamkos a better player than Matthews is.

Not only that he was runner up to McDavid the year prior.

I agree. Im having a hard wrapping my mind around this idea that its Matthews turn to be paid as the highest paid player in the league. I dont get it. Is he the best player in the league? imo not even close. And I certainly do not want another 6 yrs of overpaying our top guys only to go dumpster diving every year to fill in the gaps.

I like what Kyper said about showing Matthews a pie chart saying this big slice is you if you take 13-15 milly and see this little sliver of pie?....that is your goalie if you take that much.

Honestly.. put together a presentation of say.. last 5 cup winners and the money spread

Say we want to follow a moxel like this to get the best depth we can

Put a number range honestly on tye table of where you think this model could sustain and ask if he can make this work

Matthews' camp played Dubas like a violin. Big AAV, shorter term, huge bonuses, NMC the last year. You knew it was bad when the usual suspects defended it to the death. The only thing that screwed Matthews was the flat cap and Dubas leaving.

Anything over 14 I trade him. Anything under I sign him. I don’t feel comfortable signing him to 8 year max and would do a 3-5 year deal under 14.

yea im def warming up to the idea of shorter term...then if he slides in production or has injury issues (wrist) we arent tied down with a long contract. Why he wouldnt take the guaranteed money (longer term) over maybe making more in the future when we are talking about a 26 yr who is worth tens of millions already doesnt make sense to me but whateves.

Im okay with a 5 year deal. he will be 31 and walk away, thats okay
Id be ok with a 3yr the more I think about it

They can certainly choose to not go down that road. But they'll still be without a 1C for the foreseeable future as a result.

If the team wants to start playing hardball, I'd rather do it with a winger, not the centre

Since he joined the Leafs he is the highest scoring #2 center in the league (unless you count Drai as a center). Not sure who you could expect to be better slotted behind Matthews playing 16 minutes a night.

Matthews
McDavid
Drai (if you count him as a C)
Mackinnon
Stamkos
Crosby
Barkov
Zibanejad
Aho
Scheifele
Point

The only full time centers with more points than Tavares since he joined us. All except maybe 2 come with at least an $11M pricetag as a UFA.
