With his recurring wrist problems and who knows what else could happen, I think he'd be crazy to ask for a short-term deal in anticipation of a big jump in the cap over the next few years.

My .02 if I had a talk with him: Take ~$13M over 8 and be happy you're going to earn $100M guaranteed on top of the tens of millions you already have.

On what planet does Auston Matthews deserve more money than Connor McDavid or Nathan MacKinnon? And he's certainly not a HOF player today or the greatest Maple Leaf of all-time. Matthews is a high-end player and elite shooter who deserves 12 mil x 5 or 6 and not a penny more.

Dubas already spoiled him rotten and Matthews repaid him by winning one round in seven years and scoring 0.88 ppg (and at a 38 goal pace) in the post season. And you want to give this kid a blank check and destroy the cap situation even more so we can't surround him with adequate depth?

It's time Matthews lives up to his contract and starts making the franchise happy, not the other way around.

Auston does deserve more money than McDavid at this time....bc Matthew's contract is up first. Then when McDavid's contract comes up, he will get more than Auston. And when the next generational talent contract comes up, they'll jump ahead.

The good news is at the press conference Tree said he knows what kind of money it takes to get a contract done with Auston. Don't penny pinch. Just give Auston what he wants and make him fee; respected.

why is it only the leafs players that dont sign 8 year for reasonable money?
Only because we had Dubanator Cash Dispensary and nobody else did.

I was actually very disappointed when Big Bradley Boy or 3B as I'm going to calm him, stated his first order of business would be to fly down to wherever and supplicate himself to the boy wonder and get a feel for what's happening? Whats happening is hes got the Leafs by the shorthairs thanks to Dubas.

I didn't like it when Babcock had to fly down to rub his bum, or when he made Sheldon bow down to him. Sure the kids a star, but he ain't the boss. If anything he should be the one getting on a plane and coming to Toronto to meet his new boss and the company that's paying him like he's royalty.

Why are people deadset on a longer deal if he could have injuries that will plague him more and more as he ages?

Because if we don't get contract length now he's going to sign another 3-5 year deal for massive money then want 8 years after that for massive money

He's been given everything he's ever wanted so why wouldn't he expect that to continue?

Well 3-5 years seems like our window right now unless we get really lucky, but I get what you're saying

Willy contract drama
Marner contract drama
Dubas contract drama

I don't like where this is heading. Why would AM be any different at this point?

Make him feel respected wow.
No wonder we never win shit.
Respect should be player for the Leafs and there fans.

Players of course do need to be respected. Any employee you want to stick around needs that.

WHich is why I'm convinced AM was gone the minute the gave JT the C after the summer of raking him over the coals for childish nonsense. They embarrassed the kid making a big deal out of nothing and then handed JT the C. Wouldn't you be pissed?

No. I took both my kids out of Timmies today in line to get a treat because the older one dropped a cheap shot on the younger one. No treat, done. He's got an A, he's good. Gets the C soon. He is not mistreated by the Leafs.

Justin Hill out for Lily is drama. 11-7 is drama. It's all drama here. But regarding contracts, we hope it is different because there is a different GM this time that appears to be less dramatic then the last one.

I don't like it. I think AM is gonna work us over and ask for 15. WHich basically means he doesn't want to be here without him having to say it.

He wasn't ready for the C .
Really it should have been MO.

He can leave if something like that upsets him.

No but that is just me

He could have asked for a trade .

By the way he imbearased himself .

I didn't even think about it till you brought it up.

It was an absolute nothing. Stupid kid doing dumb shit. There was no reason for the organization to go so public with it. Unfortunately for AM the timing was awful. Peak #metoo time.

If they don't do better in the playoffs next yr then the window is closed for this core . Then there will be big changes.

He is very lucky that something serious didn't happen.
Didn't he scare a female security guard and I believe she had a gun ?

Wasn't really the organization though, the media jumped it. The Leafs would have loved that it didn't get out. Hand forced from there.

Might have been JT anyways, we'll never know. That was the debate, and then the media getting that sealed the outcome.

It was not nothing iam sorry after reading the police report again.
It was Matthew's and a group of friends while being drunk , tried to open a locked door she was startled and afraid. When she didn't open the door mathews dropped his pants . He didn't tell leaf management , they found out about it on Twitter.
It was all over the press her and in the states

What did leaf management do wrong ?

Then the Leafs were supposed to make him there captain.

As I said it's time players started respecting the team and fans .

He got drunk and dropped his drawers. If that's the worst he ever does as a 20 something he's better then me.

edit - Oh right, the not telling Leafs part. Ya that did it.

If he wants short term and big bucks, I would say less in bonus and limited nmc .
Gotta give to get. 5 x 13.34 limited ntc and min bonuses or 6 x 12.75 full nmc and all bonuses
I think you are going to be a way light on the AAV and heavy on the term. Those numbers would be a big win for the club.

Babs was never going to name anyone but JT the captain. Babs was also a huge reason the Leafs went hard for JT
News to me that he had any input. Big FAs normally are well outside a coaches pay grade. Do you have a link?

And he should be traded, if so. Let another club try to build around one grossly overpaid star. Edmonton has two players better than Matthews and they both make a lot less than 14 million. And they can't win anything significant because they have too much money tied up in a few players.

The overpay for a superstar approach doesn't work. Teams that win have depth and balance. You need players who are committed to winning and who are willing to take less for the betterment of the team -- like the Lightning and Avs stars, and a kid like Matt Tkachuk who signed long-term for 9.5 mil after scoring 40 goals and 104 points.

Tkachuk and Matthews are the same age. Does anyone truly think Matthews should be paid 50% more than Tkachuk? :ha:
Edmonton has 1 player equal to and one player being backpacked by that same player. Get it right!

Morgan Rielly.

Babs was also a huge reason the Leafs went hard for JT

Ridiculous assertion.

That was all Dubas. Took him just a few months of him being on the job to absolute pilfer the MLSE piggy-bank and boy have we been paying for it ever since.

Looking forward to his big splash move in Pittsburgh, let me tell you.

Not actually sure now said, but I’d always considered the naming of C’s and A’s the purveyance of coaches. Probably isn’t in the corporate world of the Leafs, genuine revaluation moment.

I'd think that Tavares previously having been captain with NYI and later signing here for the maximum amount of term that was available seem like good reasons for him ultimately being awarded the 'C' here. I can also envision all of Dubas, Shanahan and Babcock supporting the idea of signing Tavares.
