There's a report basically everyday that he loves Toronto and still wants to be here, GM change isn't that big of a deal, etc. This would be all-time gaslighting if he bolts.
Anyone with common sense knows whoever is the GM won’t have any bearing on AM staying or not bc No GMs would come in and rebuild the team and trade AM for picks

I think Auston is going to sign very soon… and I also think the number is 11 x 5 an even $55 million.

Still a huge number… but also sends the message to others to take a bit less.

You're dreaming if you think he's taking less than his expiring contract. The sole reason he took 5 x $11.634 million on his current contract is extract as much money as he could on his UFA contract.

For 5 years, he probably wants $15 million. I'd be satisfied if we get him for 5 x $13 million.

There's no chance Matthews takes less than he's currently earning. 12.6 x 5 would be a raise and would equal MacKinnon as the highest cap hit in the NHL. If he truly wanted to send a message he'd take an even 12 mil x 5 and forgo earning the highest paid label.

If the Leafs could get Matthews at 5 X $13 mil I'd consider that a win for the organization.

He will certainly demand being he highest paid player in the game of that I have little doubt.

Here is the thing about AM. If he does in fact want to be in Toronto then what is the basis for going into the season unsigned? Anyone please correct me but I guess we have to assume he wants to know where the cap is going. Why does a guy who has only topped 85 points once care about that? Connor and Leon should care about that but he doesn't really have the body of work to be concerned about the most a player can possibly earn.

If he beats his MVP year he is in for another bigger payday but if sub 90 points again what is he expecting? Still 13 x 5? It will be interesting to see if he will negotiate at all because odds are in favor that 2021-22 is not the season he will repeat this year and I think he would still be looking for a raise.

He said Shane Doan, not Sean Avery.

He treated the Coyotes like a casual country club for him and his buddies to hang out and golf, never chased a cup, never performed in the playoffs, and whined about how sad he was that the GM was trading his friends away for picks instead of overpaying them to continue hanging out with him on the golf course.

I’m sure he’s thrown around a couple hits in the world championship or something that won some people over but the guy is not who I want setting the cultural tone in the organization. It was bad enough when Marleau was here but at least he tried to look like he was interested in chasing a cup.

Johnston: Meanwhile, there's been a fair amount of conjecture about the relationship between Kyle Dubas and Auston Matthews as it pertains to Matthews' future in Toronto. And I think it's actually been a little bit overstated. Shocker, something like that might happen around the Leafs. But in this case, the relationship obviously between those two was good.
But what I can tell you is that since Dubas was let go earlier this month, the lines of communication have remained open between the Leafs and [Matthews'] camp. Obviously not really making any progress at this point in time. They’re having firm discussions about a contract he can sign on July 1st, but I don't think introducing a new general manager at this point in time is going to derail that. Matthews has wanted to be in Toronto. He's been consistent about that. That's what the organization feels. And I think once they have that new general manager in place, those conversations will pick up rather quickly.

You will only pay 11 million plus for players who have a 17% shooting percentage and keep that in the playoffs, none of the players who make more than Matthews have that. In fact, none of them have these as career numbers. Ovechkin doesn't even have these numbers. I'd venture no one has the numbers.

That's a gross misinterpretation of what I've said but....

Be that as it all may, I submit Sean Avery to you as biggest loser of last 20 years in NHL.

Indeed, and I believe that's part of the problem with the core of this team. Honestly, what has Matthews accomplished in his career that warrants him being the highest paid player in the NHL?
exactly. everyone waiting for this core to act like the bruins…. they’re dreaming. these are not those guys.

$13 million and 6 years is my comfort zone too. That’s the highest AAV without being anxious and 6 years is my preferred length of contract.

And $13 is absolute "we'll overpay you" max. McDavid makes 12.5 and MacKinnon 12.6. In all fairness, Matthews should be at 11.8 or 12.5 max. Twist my arm at $13, fine, but no less than 6 years. Hard stop, end of story. Anything more then the Leafs have themselves to blame for hitching their wagon to a kid who doesn't prioritize winning a Cup.

There is supposed to be a significant increase in the 24-25 season which will be the new first season for Matthews and only a small increase in Matthews last contracted season which is 23-24.

I could see him signing a 3 year deal @15.34 which if the cap rises 6m won't be quite 20%.

To me it's a no an emphatic one at that

I dont see us trading him on money related issues. If he is traded then he wants out and he has told management thus.

We wanted a #1 superstar centre since Sundin left.

If Matty is gone, good luck replacing him.
Yeah sure I guess, but I'd rather have a guy who will go through a brick wall to win. Who is a real leader and only cares about winning. Which really would be better than having a Matthews clone.
