I don’t understand why Matthews wouldn't just sign a new contract anyway. That way, you have a guaranteed contract in case you get hurt, with a provision in it that if you don’t like the direction of the team you can ask for a trade to a specific location.

Yes relative to hockey. They make a shit ton of money... but he's 8th in pay in the nfl now and he's won 2 championships already. The NFL cap is almost 3 times higher then the NHL.

The guy will end up with $500m + $160m ($660m) by 2030.

Let's be real here, Matthews is a top 5 player in the league yes but when you're getting packages like the ones I listed above not to mention the 10+ million in cap space, Matthews alone won't do it, hence why you add the 28th pick

I was just trying to say that one guy in his own league got a ton... and won 2 times already.

Matthews wants that but hasn't won. Yet still seems to want the most or be around top 3.

If he took a cut though for the team that would have a trickle down with the team.

Doubt it happens but I hope so. Otherwise maybe not Matthews but you have to try trading a bigger contract to round out the team even if you'll probably lose that trade.

Auston Matthews is one of the top handful of players in the sport and the highest profile athlete in Toronto. He makes less money than Chris Boucher on the Toronto Raptors, who makes $11.7 million.

Patrick Mahomes is on another several tiers about that. No one's going to shed a tear that Matthews isn't making $100s of millions of dollars because the NHL happens to stink, but there's also no reason to take Matthews' reputation and intentions behind the woodshed like this.
