Because he doesn’t kill penalties. That is a massive factor

By age 25 Mathew’s has scored 2 less goals than ovechkin in 6 more games.

Of course the durability is a massive difference and I can’t see anyone arguing Matthews hits 800 but

The fact that Matthews a couple of posts away from prime ovy after 7 years is insane

Who would have predicted he would have 2 rockets Pearson hart in an ovy/Mcdavid league during his draft year?

Right and anyone with good sense hopes we get a reasonable deal done for him at about 12.5 to 13m x 8.

It's his counterpart Marner that will want similar money that's the big issue. We cant afford a 12m winger. We can hardly afford a 9-10m goal scoring winger in Nylander while propping up JT and expect to round out a contender level D core. Not even going to get into the statistic on tenders that suggests teams that win a cup do so 90% of the time with one they drafted or developed.

Its a really strange situation that Smiley left us in before faking family drama and manufacturing a sneaky snake exit. Not that I care he is gone.

I thought killing penalties wasn't a reflection of defensive ability?

Yeah but they tried like really really hard. They ought to give guys who try really hard a trophy just for trying so hard, like some sort of participation award. Like a playoff version of the Lady Bing for best effort and a second Conn Smythe for Most Valuable Perseverance.

Are you actually throwing shade at those guys?

I don't know why so many on this board participate in all or nothing thinking.

Throwing Marner or Matthews on the 90s teams would have been huge, just like a Clarke, Gilmour, Roberts, etc. would be huge for the current team.

You're allowed to critique Matthews leadership and want to insulate that while also admitting the previous eras were missing something as well.

Bottom line is if Matthews had any desire to be a Leaf other then the over inflated paycheque this contract would be signed and done with by now.
Negotiation length doesn't say much to me. Pastrnak signed in March. I'll save my outrage for the inevitably unreasonable figure to term ratio he signs for.

I'm also probably in the minority of fans who thinks a truncated contract makes more sense for both parties... It just needs to be value adjusted accordingly. 13.5 for 3 years sets a horrible precedent, and simply isn't justified by any comparable in the league.

It's a waste of his time and energy. I would rather one of my top paid players not spend 25mins on the ice with 20 games left in the season so he can do PK duties, and then come game 3 round 2, crap the bed single handedly scuttle any hope we had of coming back.

You're basing this on what?

All reports of viewers and people who vote.

I drive for work so during the season I listen to 32 thoughts. Dfo rundown Chris Johnston show and the sportsnets hits of dreger/lebrun etc.

These are all voters who have s said that writers etc base selke arguments with penalties. The argument against wingers and non pk players makes it hard to win. Heck I think serevalli or Johnston run the voting? I know one I listen to does

GMs vote on the vezina and they all talk about how they know that the GMs base a huge portion on winning rather than GAA and %.

It seems that Penalty Killing diminishes how a player is viewed defensively. Ie he only gets Selke votes because he kills penalties.

Got too many money hungry players that will eventually get booed out of town like Larry Murphy. Give this 2-3 more years to fester.

I have no idea how you got there….. but selke is determined by media. Who vote. Who use defensive metrics pk time and position. (C)

Heck serevalli went on tv talking about how he didn’t want to vote for karlsson because he doesn’t pk. He says that your defensive impacts are reduced if yon can’t play all times of the game.

thought this was interesting. I wonder if it is "calmness" or "give a crap o meter is down" b/c media and especially fans have had it and don't give a flying F; Apathy finally setting in?

Personally my give a f*** meter for another round of this charade is low. Matthews already bent the organization over the barrel last negotiation and it seems he's intent on doing it again, more interested in maximizing his career earnings than signing long term while still being filthy stinking rich. Especially since every source out there says it's gonna get done, the chances for drama are low. Him re-signing is a foregone conclusion it seems, all we're waiting on his how badly we'll be taking it this time. Will he sign for $13+ million for three years, or will he do us a favour and sign for five years instead? Can't wait to see how our franchise player once again bucks the trend while everyone else gets to enjoy their stars re-signing for 7-8 years.

The only thing worse will be the stepfords who double-down and insist this is the norm, that no stars sign for 8 years, and that no stars ever take less to help increase the odds of their teams being successful.

Ya my give a crap meter is pretty low as well. It’s hard to get exited…….same core who can’t get it done and same coach who should be coaching peewee house league.
Why would we expect any difference .

Be glad to see it done, just to see it done. 13.5, no problem here, whatever it is, fine. Nylander situ is more interesting, AM is automatic.

His wrists also need to be seriously checked out...
There lies the main issue. AM34 will be bending us over once again but if his wrist can get back to normal we'll probably live with whatever he signs for

If his wrist continues to hamper his shot and lead to seasons like this one.......it could get ugly

A truncated UFA contract being value adjusted accordingly means a higher AAV. I don't think we want that.

I know we arent winning any time soon so why get worked up about it. They screwed up just like many expected when two of the most hated companies in Canada took over our team.

Think about this. Two coast to coast media companies take over a regional sports team. They own the nation wide media that carries the sports team.

Decide they will make this neutral unexciting super boring coverage platform to con the public into believing they are neutral about the whole arrangement and the nice guys while flashing their logos at us all day.

Hired essentially a con job GM that grinned his way to the top and accomplished nothing but screw our cap going forward.

Thanks but no thanks. I would like a traditional style Canadian team with media coverage that is with me cheering on my team and getting excited for them a little too. A team that plays hard and represents the atmosphere of the local hockey leagues that produce players from Ontario. Maybe something I recognize not NuHockey imported to straight out of a smiling donkeys ass.

Add Bell and Rogers ownership to me is like the Vancouver Canucks and the Habs owning us.

I care less about this team than I did during the Burke and Nonis era.

Yeah but they tried like really really hard. They ought to give guys who try really hard a trophy just for trying so hard, like some sort of participation award. Like a playoff version of the Lady Bing for best effort and a second Conn Smythe for Most Valuable Perseverance.
Nah, no trophy needed for that, but players should give maximum effort and it is OK to point that out.

They tried like really, really hard and got farther than these losers ever have with less talent. You never questioned whether they cared either.

A player taking a longer term contract has way more leverage to demand a higher AAV with the cap rising significantly for the foreseeable future

Matthews new contract is all about ego, he has done nothing to deserve highest paid player. He can survive on 10 million per cant he? He doesnt care about winning if he gets above 12 million, so thats exactly what im going to think about watching him. Money is Matthews first priority, everything else is gravy.
