I have been paying attention. I know he wasn’t going to sign my July 1 obviously.
However if they are so dam sure he will sign why hasn’t he.
Secondly I don’t care who else on other teams hasn’t signed, that’s a them problem.
Can you give one good reason why if they are both 100% positive he will sign it is being delayed other then they are far enough apart on things to cause this hesitation.
Probably waiting for him to come to town.

I don't think Matthews nor Nylander are worried about making the mortgage / rent.

They're both already under contract.

But I'm sure they appreciate our concern.
It’s really weird how some are so worried about this.

If he really does want to stay he will sign before the season begins. If he is not signed by then he will wait until the season is over.
my whole point is all the talk that he wants to stay and will certainly sign an extension with the Leafs is pure speculation and nothing more. If they are far enough apart that they don’t have the deal done by now there is a possibility that he does not sign and try’s free agency next year
Thats how I see it. Look at how JT & Gaudreau all strung their teams along, always said the right things, never signed & when the time came so did they. AM is giving me those vibes. WN even worse

Just to play devil's advocate, it's not fair to assume he'll leave just because two other players left their teams. What about all the other players that said they wanted to stay and did stay? There are far more of those cases.

They dont give a sh@@ sbout our concern....they'll string us slong because they know Shanny wants them back ...period. Shanny should be jettisoned...this would be resolved in a week tops.

True...but these 2 (and MM) prima donnas see themselves in a different light. The TML have catered to them since day 1. They fired the coach for them, they had the other coach apologize to them for honest comments, they got their contract demands....they have NO fear of the TML. Failure dosent impact them at all...no....the core we have is rotten & should have been traded. I would have probably kept AM ....but his wrist is a serious concern. Regardless, imho he & WN will string us along unless we open the vault again.

Kypreos on the radio this morning said he heard its 13.5 a year, fwiw.

Excellent news. I was assuming 13.7x3/4. Looks like he is setting the tone for discounts all-round.
:biglaugh::biglaugh:

Of course Matthews doesn't plan on leaving. Where else could he find a team so willing to bend over so far?

Sometimes the grass is greenest right where you are. And I do mean greenest!!

For the first time in our storied franchise history we have a generational player, and now everyone wants to drag him through the mud! For shame. We should be much more grateful and appreciative. Our time with him will be but a drop in the ocean.

Not dragging anyone through the mud, just saying 13.5 doesn't seem like a discount to me. Maybe if it was for 8 years but my understanding is that the term will be much shorter.

So far our time with him hasn't led to any playoff success so I'm not feeling particularly sentimental about him myself. And if he wants to be the highest paid player in the world after the mediocre season he just had, it may well be that we need "our time with him" to end before we can start thinking realistically about going deep in the playoffs again.

He's a great player when he's on and when he's healthy but when he's not, he's nowhere near worth that kind of cap hit. And no matter what, I'll always be a "crest on the front" kind of guy and the names on the back will always be a very distant second to the team. And I don't see 13.5 million on a short term for this guy being a positive for the team, it feels more like a premium than a discount.

It has to be 5 yrs at the minimum, giving the Leafs a 4 year window after Tavares’ money is off the books.

David Pastrnak did not win the cup, and had also been previously difficult to come to terms with and yet he didn’t sign until March. And there are countless other examples, many of which already brought up repeatedly in this very thread.

The fact Matthews and Nylander are not yet extended on July 18th is in no way abnormal or a big problem
And Bruins fans were concerned during that time he was unsigned. How do you think things will be perceived if AM isn't signed until March after him saying that he hopes to have something done before the season started?

According to my imaginary source, they're waiting for a really slow news day to announce it.

$13.5 x 4-5 is supposed to be a discount?
That was my reaction as well. I mean if someone would pay him more than that, then I guess technically you could call it a discount. Not sure anyone would pay him more though, kind of doubt it actually and even if they would, that still doesn't mean he's worth it.

SJ supposedly offered JT more than we did, doesn't seem like people are happy that we have a discounted JT under contract. I guess my point is that just because someone is willing to sign with you for a "discount", that doesn't mean it's in the teams best interest to do it.
