Tapping out at past 13 on 4-5 years. He may only want 3 years and that would make most sense to him. He gets a mid contract raise to be highest paid and it's just like being signed to the 8 initially.

Eliot Friedman just reported he believes Matthews wants to sign at a medium term at highest cap hit in the league.
No other team in the league would give him a 5 year 12.7M or whatever deal as a UFA or internal signing

Hes trying to play dubas/leafs management again

Tell this greedy f*** he gets 12M x 8 years or we deal him out

There's no way he's looking, or getting, max money. $16m+? 4 more then MacK? No chance. They aren't proposing that.
for months reporting has been he's looking at between $14M - $15M on a 4 -5 year term.

Thered be a lineup for him at 13x5
Nobody would sign him to that deal

No superstar ufa gets to be paid the highest AAV and give 5 years term

Crosby signed for 13 years his 3rd deal
Stamkos for 8 years
JT even for 7 years.
Mack for 8 years
Gaudreau 7 years
Kane + Toews 3rd deals were 8 yesrs
Etc

Mcdavid + Drai will be either 8 or 7 depending on if they leave or stay

No team will take 5 years of AM34 and have a smaller window to contend while making him the highest paid player in the league despite 2 years of being a top 5 player in his career.

5 years externally he'd be taking a paycut if any team even offered a 5 year term.

7 year deal will be what he gets if he leaves Toronto

No real GM would give Matthews a 5 year deal at $11.634 mil with 4 of those 5 years cost controllable RFA years and you only bought 1 year of free agency.

5 years at $12.7 mil (all 5 years UFA) is actually a better deal than his current one, and I respectfully disagree, believing any team with cap space that could get Matthews as a UFA under contract would offer him that deal. IMO.

Youre crazy if you think teams wouldnt want to lock up a prime player from 27-31. Hell, id argue you want him for that period more than the 32-34 you'd be tacking on at 12-13M.

Tavares is such an odd comparison, wouldnt you want him resigning noe instead of playing out the final 2 years at 11M?

Tavares at 5 years in your case is still getting 11M

We saw that paying a guy who isnt worth 11M leads to failure. Whether its for 5 or 7 years both will suck

Matthews usnt a 13M players, hes not worth 11.634 the way he played in 2020 abd 2023.

Overpaying for him, you hope to get 8 years and see the cap rise so his 13M isnt as hurtful.

Teams just dont give high end UFA 5 year deals and absurd AAV.

5 years at 10.5-11M teams would be interested for sure

5 years at 13-14M kills a team and in 5 years Matthews probably leaves again

Or what? Dubas gave him the leverage.

Let's break this down a little

1. Would you rather pay Tavares 11M the next 2 years or have him becoming a UFA now? My votes UFA
2. If you think Matthews is overpaid at that number why do you want to extend it for the 32-34 yo years? Do you think he'll be a better value then?

Generally teams cant lock up UFA's for those numbers their forced to overpay on the backend. If we can avoid that, why wouldnt we?

That will be determined by when will AM starts to decline?
I think the AVV is more important than the length of the deal unless 3 yrs or less.

There is no way he is worth more than Mack, he should get a slightly better deal than Pastra.
Think 12.5mil is acceptable

You would be surprised to know who makes the most money off ice, based on 2021 stats;

Ovechkin $5m
McDavid $4.5m
Mathews $3.8m
According to Forbes

So what happens if he has another 2 or 3 60 goal season, tears it up in the playoffs and doesn't win a cup, will he get paid in his retirement.
Sure he will. What happens if he has another 2 or 3 60 goal seasons, tears it up in the playoffs AND wins a cup? He's going to get paid in retirement, but there's an entirely different scale if his legacy is that of a winner.

You’re dreaming dude. The man has clearly earned a raise, and 13M would not be at all be putting the screws to us. There’s a very strong chance the cap is ~5M+ higher before he even plays a game of that contract.

Scientists will investigate this comment for the purest hopium and copium that it contains. 13m wouldn't be putting the screws to us? Yeah, the highest paid player in the league should be the one who disappears when the games matter most lol. Mackinnon won a cup and McDavid is the best player in the league. Matthews won the Hart a year ago and scores a lot of goals, he's a superstar who deserves big money and there's no doubt about it, but the Toronto Maple Leafs should not be the professional organization where falling short of your expectations generate you a raise. He got $58m on his last contract, he does not need to be paid in advance for services that he has yet to deliver from his first deal.

I said $13M is my line in the sand yeaterday, tough to walkaway for less than that IMO.

I'd give him $100k more than MacKinnon but tell him we are gonna have to move his buddy.

Auston says I want $1.5M more than Mackinnon and I want my buddy to stick around otherwise I'm heading to free agency

I say OK boss! First of all where are we getting the cap space from, second of all Bieber seems like a good kid, but I don't think he's got the chops to play in the NHL.

Trade him and his buddy.
The correct answer sir

has to be before july 1st
Most likely but if you can't, he could agree to give us a list of teams he would be willing to sign with like Tkachuk did last year. Leafs nation won't rest the longer he remains unsigned after July 1st. Probably a good idea to get out of Dodge.
