If we remove the name "Matthews" and look at this subjectively, a different picture crystalizes:
1. Star player of their team sees a significant drop-off in goals and points over 7 years in the playoffs.
2. Star player seems to only want to sign short-term deals with their team.
3. Star player has already been slightly overpaid once and is likely looking to be highly overpaid again.
4. Star player just seems to be difficult to agree to terms with unless he gets everything he wants.
5. Star player lacks fire, emotion, and reacts rather cavalier to losing.
I know Matthews is our star player but we are also the Toronto Maple Leafs. As much as we want to give him, he should be willing to do the same in return. We're not some flunky bottom feeder in a crummy market like the Yotes, Blue Jackets, Kraken, etc. If Matthews doesn't want to commit to us and make some sacrifices to be part of the organization long-term, than that's a problem with him, not the Leafs or us.
What's right is right. This is a 2-way street and the organization and fans have done nothing but treat this kid like a King since he's been here. There's nothing wrong with him doing his part. And if he's not willing to, then someone in Toronto needs to put their foot down and say "enough is enough." Continuing to cower to him and pamper him is unacceptable. He can no longer hold the team hostage and have us walk on egg shells until he gets everything he wants. That's not the type of person who should be the face of the franchise.
