That is insane. Just trade him - which would be so much easier if he had 2 years left instead of one. Thanks Dubas.

And then Marner wants $12.5M and Nylander wants $10M, and 3 players are making $36.5M.

Where do you draw the line?
After you sign Matthews is where you draw the line.

Franchise, 1st line, rocket caliber C’s are the guys you overpay, if any.

Everyone else can kick rocks if they want to be paid like the best leaf of all time. It takes a GM with balls to facilitate that convo, but these guys need to know where they stand in the grand scheme of things. None of these guys will be offered league min, but in marners case - he needs to understand that he doesn’t deserve a raise. AT ALL. He was over paid in his last contact, we can not double down on that.

turned out some virus jumped over into humans and put the world into a 2 year spiral lol.
And???

There is no guarantee the NHL will get a better deal with Canadian TV. There is no guarantee the cap will go up. If it doesn't, 8x$14M+ will kill this team.

That's fair but do you really think Marner (and his dad) will agree? It will get ugly fast.

if he walks signs the same contract elsewhere and the cap goes up we still kill this team because no longer have a 1C...works both ways

And that's fair. You're right. The Leafs are between a rock and a hard place because we have 2 of the most selfish / self important players in the NHL.
problem is in 2 years when guys like Draisatl and McDavid come due people are going to suddenly forget the leafs guys took 13-15 because those guys are going to be getting 16-17. If we could get a redo I would've given Matthews the 8 year contract at 1 or 2m higher than he's making right now because we could make that decision later down the line. The biggest slip up was not accepting Marner's 8 x 8 request prior to the season; but that's what you get when you have good players that you believe you can continue to sign in inflationary cap environments. We just got the leafs luck of a pandemic crushing the cap lol.

I can all but guarantee that they will disagree. I guess that makes it easy for our GM, explain to the media that marners ask was excessive and the leafs will be utilizing him as an “own-rental”.

Asset management wise, that’s a tough pill to swallow. But the 10.5mil cap benefit is helpful to offset what we’re losing.

The cultural shift from the name on the back, to the crest on the front, will be worth the weight in gold. It will send a signal to the players that this time is different. I truly believe this is the way, if Marner is going to be difficult.

I offer him 13.5 x 8. You are the highest paid player in the league by a significant gap, you get security, you get 130+ million career earnings and the potential for another contract still, but you also give the team a chance to win with that number.

If we are into 14-15M, trade him. That simple.

Every team had to deal with the Cap not going up. Why did it only suffocate us?

Re : "in 2 years when guys like Draisatl and McDavid come due... those guys are going to be getting 16-17"

I don't know about that, my friend. My guess : They will take (much) less to help the team.

Well said.

In this situation I’m not expecting another Covid scenario again, weirder things have happened though.
If the Leafs (or any other team) bank on the Cap going up, they are asking for trouble - if it doesn't, this team is D.O.A.

they won't im willing to bet on it. McDavid took less last time and the oilers rewarded him with missing playoffs, sweeps, bad goalies etc. I don't see him being so gracious again. Draisatl got his deal before breaking out and Chiarelli got ragged for it. I bet he takes 15+ on the next one (I guarantee the PA pushes for their salaries to go up; from what I remember reading and hearing the PA wasn't too happy with McDavid taking a cut)

Edit and to your other point: we were the only team who signed 3 forwards to 10 m plus no one else did

Kyper was saying that if Matthews does 8 years then his agent would want $14-15 million per.
I wonder how Kyper would possibly know this. Why would Matthews side leak such specific information? This reminds me of Dreger and his Marner reporting. Although some of it might ring true in the end, I am thinking he is drawing it out of his ass.

In the last couple of years Kyper has been pretty spot on with the little nuggets he drops.

Still, specific and yet not. $14M vs $15M per are more than just 1 digit apart. Any intel would have to come for Moldaver and I can't see him bothering to present a range like that to the rumor mill. It sounds more like a third party speculation and NK is just repeating it for clicks.

$14M is more than he is worth but I think the club would be awful tempted to take a swing as they are only a Marner trade away from making the money work. $15M is a number that an 85 point player should be embarrassed to even hint at.
